2. Beyond the knowledge and wisdom the joy and happiness share by ASAP
becomes a matter of motivation amongst us. The art of skilling is now at the
fore of policy makers and government is considering it with paramount
importance. When NSQF and the New Education policy make skill an integral
part of education, the significance of skill development programme like
Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) is getting high attention.
The ASAP mission Ernakulam is in the forefront of disseminating the theme of
skill education. The first Community Skill Park (CSP) in the state becomes a
reality soon at the district near Perumbvoor. The Team ASAP is preparing to
welcome Summer batches of students to the family. All the positive tidings
make our spirit and mind up.
The magazine is blossomed due to the collective effort of diverse stakeholders
of the mission. With immense pleasure, I congratulate my team members for
the outstanding creativity they exhibited.

4. Here comes the relevance of the summer skill training programme of
ASAP, named Summer Skill Skool, a joint initiative of General and
Higher Education Departments, Govt. of Kerala. The programme
kicked off on the first week of April with an aim to train the needy and
the disadvantaged students graduating from Under Graduate and
Higher Secondary Classes, to generate a pool of fully self-sufficient
workforce. The students rather than idling their summer vacation,
apportion their time prudently to the skill classes. As the course
structure is designed in the best interest of the students, giving equal
weightage to both theory and practical sessions, the classes turn out to
be more interesting. The practical sessions give hands on experience
to the budding talents, making them efficient and employable in a
particular industrial sector.
The students are also keen to attend the internship programme which
helps in gaining professional employment experience. To put in the
nutshell, the Summer Skill Skool programme under ASAP will
rejuvenate the young children by filling a sap of energy in their minds.
6. When a champion
born

I had been enjoying my days with a group of smart
kids since I joined GHSS Athanickal for the foundation
module for the academic year 2014-15. I still cherish
about those moments because I was inventing myself
as a trainer for the first time in my life. From the first
session itself I came to the realization that training is
different from teaching.
Even though the kids were smart and enthusiastic
towards life, I noticed some of them being timid and
shy to face the class if they were asked to. As the
programme progressed some students got rid of their
reluctance to address the class . But even after 50
hours there remained a girl who was shy to speak to
the public but was free to talk to others during
interactive sessions. And I felt like I should do
something different to help her out her comfort zone.
7. During the farewell of that batch which was scheduled after
board exams, I asked her to give a vote of thanks to the
function being attended by principal and teachers. She
responded positively and delivered a talk which was
applauded by the asap coordinator and other teachers. She
proved her mettle and she had a champion's smile on her
face.
Timely appreciations can create positive vibrations in a child
thereby leading him to use his/her potential at its fullest to get
recognition again. As a film dialogue goes, those who once
enjoyed flying would always look for the experiences of flying
again and again. Similar to this, having once tasted the
sweetness of recognition, the child will thrive for appreciation
again and again. This is one of a few lessons I learnt about
effective training in the light of the short span of experience
as a trainer and teacher till now.
10. SSS I dot - Craft Baker Batch commenced on April
20th. Initially all were reluctant to each other as they
were from different areas and schools. As days
passed they become strong and deep as a batch, and
started to care and concerns for each other. One day
they noticed that Soumya becoming irregular in class.
Then friends enquired about the reason for
irregularity.
Soumya replied that “She was not well and she is a
under medication for health issues. She comes from
far away and her parents find it difficult to bear the
travel expense too”, and that she may discontinue the
course.

11. There comes the helping hand from one of her class mate
SAFA. By seeing Soumya` s genuine interest in learning the
subject and by understanding her economic situation safa
told, she will bear the Travel expense of Soumya and we will
not allow her to discontinue.
All the students was happy and soumya accepted the offer
without any hesitation.
That’s the spirit this Summer Skill Batches provided to SDC
Perumbavoor. They learned and enjoyed their vacation by
baking cakes, cookies, Pizza, apple Pies and finally chilling
Black Forest. It doesn’t even took a day time to resolve the
issue. That’s how the students deal within. Even though it
was summer time, for soumya and her family it became a
Winter because of Safa!!!
13. The library occupies a very important place in school. Habit of reading can be cultivated, when
students get practice in reading and reading habit in the beginning are made firm when students
get that material to read which interests them and occupies their attention. In the class room the
books that are prescribed may not serve the purpose, some students may not be in a position to
purchase all books that they want to read, while others may not find books that are of interest to
them.
Interests differ, aptitudes vary, and individual capacities present a wide variation in students’
reading capacities. In the library each has what he wants, each goes at the speed to which his
capabilities allow him to go. The library is thus, a common platform upon which all students meet
on a common level with equal opportunities. It is the nucleus of the school environment, the
center of the intellectual activities of the school.
Keeping this in mind, an exclusive library for ASAP students has started in SDC GHSS
MANJAPRA by the ASAP students. At present 40 books are in the capacity, which will be
increased in times to come.

15. REVAMPING THE
SUMMERSCAPE

William Saroyan, the famous American writer, in his short story ‘The
Shepherd’s Daughter’ recounts how the life of a rich Persian Prince was saved
from the captivity of robbers. The Royal Prince fell in love with the shepherd’s
daughter and wanted to marry her. But she insisted the Prince, though rich, on
learning a craft before their marriage. The Prince learned weaving and his skill
in weaving saved his life. Here the writer highlights the need of learning skills in
one’s life.
Skill development for students has an important role to play in nurturing the
economy of our country. There is a major skill gap in the country as a larger
percentage of the educated youth are unemployable. As Kim Campbell, the
former Canadian Prime Minister puts it, despite our high rate of unemployment,
many jobs go unfilled largely because, many of the unemployed lacks the skills
needed for an industrial environment. When the current job scenario is taken
into account, the job industry also expects the prospective workforce to come
prepared with specialized skills.
16. I had a unique opportunity to undergo the Management
Intern Certification Programme (MICP) at ASAP
subsequently to adore the dignified role of Skill
Development Executive . The one thing that I would like to
say about ASAP is that “It is a REAL WORLD”. A real
world where you meet real people, real situations, real
problems. Everything here is real with no boundaries.
Unlike other internships, ASAP gives me an opportunity to
work and be part of this big world, where I get to manage
office, students, training partners. ASAP gives a platform
where I can put into practise those things which I have
learned so far during my education. Dealing with a real life
practical scenario is far different from what I have learned
inside the four pillars. Here every individual gets a
respectable space which you will not get in any other
organisation.
I cherish being an ASAPian and I am proud to say that I
am a part of this family…

17. The word “education” has multiple definitions,
depending on the source that defines the word. We
know the significance of education to achieve
almost anything, but from whom, what or where
must this education come from? What is the true
meaning of the word “education”? These are few
basic questions come to our mind whenever we
deal with topics related to formal or alternative
education systems.
Most people would judge how educated you are by
the amount of schooling you achieved or how
much of a bookworm you are. If looked up in many
dictionaries, a definition would be something like
“to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of”.
This cannot mean that it is only acquired from
formal schooling. Reading every book in the world
could not educate you on certain things. This basic
idea is where many people go wrong and ASAP
has its foundation.

19. Our formal education systems are primarily concerned about the
acquisition of knowledge but they completely fail to address two
important aspects, skill and character. Knowledge is a very important
aspect in our life but without proper skills and good interpersonal
relationship students may find it difficult to build a career or make use
of the knowledge they have acquires over the years.
In the past, ASAP was largely about preparing students for a better
career but now programme also teaches students about the world
they live in, which allows them to understand and appreciate their
lives and their interactions with others. A well-developed foundation
module covering topics varies from knowing oneself to interpersonal
skills help students make informed decisions in their life and market
oriented skill courses widen the career opportunities.
Over the years ASAP has managed to transform the lives of
thousands of students and families across the state.
Dear friends, don’t wait for a change because it’s not going to
happen, joins us and be the change you want to see.
