The Second Generation Asian Americans
The United States is known to acquire more opportunities and to allow people around the world to make a better living for themselves and their family.
As many migrated over to the U.S., immigrants found themselves going through economic hard times. The most dramatic turn of the century was
during the 1920s with the emergence of second generation Asian Americans. Although some Asian Americans were born in their homeland, coming to
the U.S. at the age of six still classified them as Asian Americans as they were raised within assimilation of America. Second Generation Asian
Americans experienced America more than their parents ever did and that caused a lot of concerns and tension between them and their parents. The
Second Generation Asian Americans experienced tension between their parents with the emergence of the second generation, the influence of the
American culture, creating their own paths and future, and the racial discrimination while growing up. The emergence of the second generation
bloomed quickly and by 1930, 41% of the Chinese population in America was naturalized born citizens. The birth of a child in America was
symbolization of an elite status in an Asian American's family (Lee 177). First generation immigrant parents feared the worst for their children who
were second generation Asian Americans. The parents of the children feared that their children will grow up learning the American culture and

Queer Compulsions by Amy Sueyoshi serves as a wonderful insight of various struggles of Japanese immigrants with Americans in its depiction of
specific individual of Yone Noguchi through his intimate relationship with other Americans of both sexes. Through the life of Noguchi, the author
aims to touch on both racial and sexual (both sexual identity and gender) standards which were expected at the time, and how those affected not only
the life of Noguchi, but also the lives of many Japanese immigrants. Most part of the book, from Chapter 1 to 4, the author talks extensively about
relationships (not only intimate/family relationships, but also other relationships with general American population, especially Bohemian) that
Noguchi had from the beginning of his life. The author utilizes overwhelming amount of excerpts from private letters that were both sent by and
sent to Noguchi, exploring the use of language extensively. Drawing most of quotes from private letters of Noguchi and exploring the usage of
terms and affection behind the usage, the book reads like a fine storybook; however, such heavy quotes on letters and explanation of language have
made reader, I, to be confused whether this is a book about a life of a person or a book about general depiction of Japanese immigrants of the time.
Even though it was pleasant to read beautiful language, mostly due to sharp contrast to languages of other literatures that we read, it made both easy

Primitive Mysteries she continued to stick with the American theme. The most influential American themed dances were Appalachian Spring, American
Document and Frontier. The American Document was a dance that used the Bible as well as the Declaration of Independence as inspiration. There was

beginning their lives together on the American Frontier. The dance was popular when it was introduced to the public and is still known as one of her

was the first time she used Isamu

The field trip to the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) was an enriching, inspiring, diverse experience that engaged in many collections of art with
unlimited dimensions and is known as the iconic cultural institution in the Gulf South. The field trip was engaging and gave students the opportunity
to facilitate learning at the heart of the museum which is filled with more than one hundred objects of American Art spanning three centuries, and an

The circular environment of
Sunken Garden functions as a fountain in the summer, and remains dry in the winter. He said "the rocks I found in Japan for this garden contain a
levitating as well as a gravitating quality. Some of them will seem to soar, others, remain close to the earth." Noguchi drew on the concept of Japanese

The exhibition that focuses on contemporary artworks since 1960 will be small, containing only two pieces. The pieces are both sculptures, Violet
Persian Set with Red Lip Wraps by Dale Chihuly and Nefertiti by Wendall Castle. The theme of the exhibition will be about the reimagining of the
exotic female form through abstract sculpture–specifically, in–the–round, free–standing sculptures. Both Chihuly's piece as well as Castle's fit this
theme as they depict abstract forms that can be interpreted as feminine. However, the pieces look radically different from one another and are fairly
abstract. One sculpture shows a strong and regal womanly form while the other could be interpreted as the exact opposite. Both sculpture's in the
exhibition can also be seen as being inspired by the exotic and romanticized past. At a glance, Violet Persian set with red lip wraps is a very abstract
form with many different parts and pieces. There are cone shapes wrapped in thin waved sheets of blown glass. It appears as though Chihuly uses
cane working in his piece as there are stripes of color throughout each layer. It measures approximately 2.5 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and is made of
twenty different sections of sculpted glass that must be disassembled and reassembled every time it is moved. The outer wraps, like shells, gently
wrap the glass shapes in their folds. The interior sculptures take on the shapes of cones, trumpets and petals and are nestled closely together. The

Mary Wigman had influence over Germany for modern dance as she began working with Rudolph Laban and she created a dance school in Dresden
for students to learn something new which was in fact a creative experience that is an expression of emotional impulses. She wanted her dancers to be

After the death of her father in 1916, Graham attended a performance by Ruth St Denis, which made her realise that she wanted to dance. She enrolled
in the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, located in Los Angeles. Founded by Ruth St Denis and Ted Shawn, the Denishawn School was
the only major dance company that worked outside of classical ballet. Denishawn had a large influence on choreographers throughout the 1920's and
1930's, and provided training for many well–known dance pioneers, such as Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey and Miss Graham. In 1923, Graham
was urged to leave Denishawn by then music accompanist Louis Horst. He claimed that dance had an independent life of music, and did not stem from
it. Horst educated Graham about musical form, and persuaded her to collaborate with contemporary composers rather than using music from the 18th
and 19th centuries. He also introduced Graham to the style of Mary Wigman – a German dancer – , and modern painters Cubist and Wassily Kennedy.
He was a prominent figure throughout her life with musical collaboration lasting 32 years, he was a close mentor and friend of Graham, and urged her
to follow an independent career.

Throughout history dance was used solely for worship reasons. Dance goes as far back as the ancient Egyptian days; it's possible it could go back

Another impactful woman was Katherine Dunham. Dunham had a serious passion for dance. Unfortunately, at the time segregation still existed
and black people were not allowed into the same places as white people. When Katherine Dunham preformed at a business that features dancers,
the owners were blown away and wanted her back. Before she came back she told them she wouldn't preform until black people were allowed to
sit in and watch, they liked her so much they agreed to it. Not only did Dunham break the "norm" by being one of the first black, female
performers, but she also made it possible for other people who aren't white be able to enjoy her show as well. What Dunham achieved in her lifetime
is very important and helped contribute to ending segregation. These two are only two examples of how dance has helped shape society and influence
many. There are many other instances where dance has played a huge role in the world.
Dances vary depending on the culture. Here in the United states we have various forms of dance, whether you're doing the chicken dance, "whipping,"
or "nay–naying," these are all examples of modern day dances in America. We could even look back to the days where men and women went to the
parlor in their greased hair and poodle skirts and danced to some ol' time rock n' roll. There are so many countries that have their own known dances,

Numerous Mexican inhabitants at the time were illiterate and encouraging the new–fangled government's message could not have been successfully
accomplished through traditional media such as pamphlets and newspapers. However, the government interconnected their cause through large–scale
murals in public places which could be seen by many. The murals' aesthetic appeal would also help Mexicans adapt to the new administration by
affecting an overall sense of self–importance and cultural exquisiteness within the community. The murals were usually created with themes lionizing
the Mexican Revolution, recalling Mexico's early pre–Hispanic inheritance and upholding the ideals of the new government.
In order to for the murals to be created, the government had to search for some of the best Mexican artists of the day. While Mexican Muralism was
intended to promote the principles of a new post revolution government, the artists were granted absuolute freedom, so the imagery and themes that
