Rómulo de Carvalho was a Portuguese teacher, poet, and author who published over 50 books in fields like history and science. He was born in Lisbon and had a long academic career teaching at several high schools in Portugal. One of his most famous poems was "Black Tear", which analyzed the chemical composition of a tear shed by an African girl. Paula Rego is a renowned Portuguese painter born in 1935 who studied in London. Her work often features feminist and folk themes from Portugal and has won several honors. John Lennon was a founding member of the Beatles who went on to have a successful solo career until his assassination in 1980 outside his New York City apartment building.

Rómulo de Carvalho was a Portuguese
teacher and poet. He was born in Lisbon
where he later did his primary education.
There are 51 known published books of his
own in the fields of history and science.

Rómulo de Carvalho was a
precocious child who, at the
age of 5 had already written
poems and at the age of 10
decided to “complete” the
greatest Portuguese epic work
“Os Lusíadas”.
He was a prominent Physics
teacher, who at the age of 50
decided to publish the poems he
had been writing for many years.
“Movimento Perpétuo” was well
received by the critics. A perfect
symbiosis between science and
poetry, life and dream, makes him
an outstanding poet of the XXth
century.

5. Paula Rego (January 26,
1935- Present)
Paula Rego is a Portuguese painter born in Lisbon. In the 50’s, she left to
London to study art outside the Portuguese dictatorship. She studied in the
Slade School of Fine art until 1956. In 1959 she married the painter Victor
Willing, who had been her colleague in art school.
Most of her work is based on storybook, however she started
her artistic life with abstracts. Her works often represent
feminism with folk-themes from Portugal.
Recognition, awards and distinctions:
-Declared Dame Grand Cross of the Order of British Empire, by
Queen Elizabeth II (June, 2010);
-Declared Grand Officer (June 9, 1995), then elevated to Grand
Cross of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword (October
13, 2004)
-Honoris Causa PhD of the Lisbon University (February 11, 2011)

8. John Lennon (October
9, 1940- December 8,
1980)• 1956: John forms his first band the Quarrymen. Later John asks
Paul McCartney to join the band.
• 1958: John writes "Hello Little Girl," his first song.
• July 1, 1958: George Harrison, a friend of Paul, joins the
Quarrymen.
• January 1, 1961: The Beatles, with John Lennon as front man,
debut at Liverpool's Cavern Club.
• August 23, 1962: John marries Cynthia Powell (Fig. 1).
• February 1963: The Beatles (Fig.2) record the Please Please
Me album in one day.
• April 8, 1963: Julian Lennon is born to John and Cynthia.
