The Articles of Confederation were the first constitution of the United States from 1781-1789. It created a very weak central government with limited powers, reserving most authority for the individual states. This structure proved problematic as the central government could not effectively regulate trade disputes between states, maintain national defense, or pay off war debts. As a result, the Articles of Confederation were replaced by the United States Constitution to establish a stronger federal government.
