Ice cream originated in ancient Rome and was developed over centuries in various cultures, becoming an important part of American culture and cuisine. It is now the top consumed dessert in the United States, with the average American eating over 20 quarts per year. While ice cream is strongly associated with America, there are many international counterparts and variations around the world that use local ingredients.
American-style ice cream uses only milk and/or cream as ingredients and is eggless. It owes its thick, heavy texture to the high amounts of milk and cream used. Federal law in the United States requires ice cream to contain at least 10% milkfat. American-style ice cream is also known as "standard" or "Philadelphia-style" ice cream, named after Nancy Johnson who patented the first commercial ice cream maker in Philadelphia in 1843. The flavor of American-style ice cream complements the creaminess and does not overpower other ingredients like fruit.

Halloween traditions in the United States involve carving pumpkins and going trick-or-treating. Pumpkins are carved into jack-o-lanterns based on the Celtic tradition of carving faces into turnips. On Halloween, children go door-to-door collecting candy in pillowcases. Popular Halloween foods include candy corn, caramel apples, and pumpkin pie made from ingredients harvested in the fall like apples and pumpkins. Farms offer activities such as hay rides, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches in the fall months surrounding Halloween.

American apple pie is considered a symbol of American prosperity and national pride. While ancient Greeks are believed to have originated pie pastries, apple pie was brought to the American colonies by the British, Dutch, and Swedes in the 17th-18th centuries, as there were no native apples. Apple pie became associated with celebrations of presidents Washington and Lincoln's birthdays. By the 19th-20th centuries, apple pie had become a symbol of Americana, giving rise to the saying "as American as apple pie." Today, apple pie remains one of the most popular varieties of pie for Americans.

While the origins of pie are unknown, early versions were made by ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. Apple pie became popular in America in the 18th century after apples were introduced from Europe. The classic American apple pie descends from 15th century English apple pies but is similar to modern pies with apples, sugar, spices, and bottom and top crusts. Apple pie is often cited as being as American as apple pie but originated elsewhere and was transformed into a distinctly American tradition.

1. “California Strawberry Festival”
Have you ever tried a strawberry pizza? If you went to Oxnard, the "Strawberry Capital
of California," in May, you could!
Oxnard is in Southern California and this part of the state takes its strawberries very
seriously. At the two-day California Strawberry Festival you can sample strawberries
prepared in all sorts of ways. In addition to traditional treats such as strawberry
shortcake, strawberry jam, strawberry tarts and strawberries dipped in chocolate, there
is strawberry pizza! This dessert pizza is topped with strawberries, sour cream, cream
cheese and whipped cream on a sweet bread baked like a pizza. Strawberry kabobs
dipped in powdered sugar are another delicacy. And drinks such as a strawberry
smoothie can wash it all down.
Strawberries are big business in Oxnard. The annual strawberry revenues are $100
million from Oxnard's bountiful 6,600 berry acres. Twenty-four companies harvest and
cool nearly 16 million trays of berries, which are shipped throughout North America as
well as to Germany and Japan. The festival, which attracts more than 85,000 visitors,
features three stages with musical entertainment, 335 arts and crafts exhibits, strolling
musicians, clowns, artists, face-painting, contests, and a "Strawberryland" for children
with puppets, magicians, musicians, and a petting zoo.
