Art Survey is a general exposure to many artistic ideas, materials and techniques. It is a hands-on introduction to
the world of the artist with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design. Students must take Art Survey
before taking most other art courses. The goal of the course is to offer exposure, to develop creative thinking and
problem-solving skills and to explore students’ artistic abilities and interests working in both two-dimensional and
three-dimensional forms. Through this course students will have a firm foundation for further study in the visual
arts as well as an appreciation of the role the arts have played in the development of our civilization and culture.
Completion of Art Survey is a hands-on and meaningful means for students to fulfill half of the fine arts
requirement for graduation. An enriched credit may be earned for those students who qualify

Introduction to Drawing and Painting is a semester long course which is designed to develop skills and knowledge
using a variety of artistic mediums and techniques. Connections between art history and culture will be explored
though the creative process. Students will use drawing and painting media to express ideas, thoughts and emotions.
Students will explore and apply the elements and principles of design as well as use color theory and perspective in
their own, original compositions. The course will focus on drawing and painting from direct observation in
mediums and techniques that may include pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolors and acrylic painting, comparing
and contrasting mediums to develop a personal style of preference.

Introduction to Ceramics is a semester long course that introduces the student to many different means of working
with clay as an artistic medium. Students will learn pinch, slab, coil methods of construction and beginning wheel
throwing. They will also experience low-fire and high fire techniques for finishing or glazing their creations. Hand
built projects may include relief carved masks, slab-constructed functional forms, and solid form sculptures.

Advanced Ceramics is a semester long course that elaborates on the many different means of working with clay as
an artistic medium. Students will further explore coil building, soft and leather hard slab construction, clay
extrusion and various mold-making techniques. Students will also use ceramics as a sculptural material in creating
a portrait sculpture. Students will learn a number of different firing and glazing techniques. A development of skills
working on the potter’s wheel would include bowls, functional vessels and covered containers. Understanding and
working with the principles of design will be stressed throughout this course as well as relationships of ceramic
forms to historical and cultural periods.

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Commercial Art deals with art as communication in an applied setting. Instruction will include typography;
illustration, layout, photo manipulation, advertising techniques, logo design, and computer aided design on
Macintosh and PC computers, using scanners, digital cameras and advanced graphic design software such as
Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator and others. Much of the work will be published in the yearbook,
appear on the Internet, and other print media in the school and community. Students will also be assembling a
portfolio of work, which may help them gain access to further design schools or a position as a commercial artist.
This course is fully accredited with WCTC, college level or tech school credit may be earned.

48. SCULPTURE
Sculpture is a course that combines materials with ideas. Students will explore many different mediums and
techniques in the creation of three-dimensional objects. Major areas of exploration include: CARVING: The
process of shaping material by reducing its mass. MODELING: The direct sculptural method using pliable
materials such as clay, plaster, and wax that allow the sculptor to create complex forms by adding or subtracting
the material. CONSTRUCTION: Also known as assemblage, the technique using a variety of materials including
plastics, fabric, glass, found objects or metals to create a new comment or interpretation. CASTING: The use of
molds to recreate human or man-made forms or to produce multiples.

53. JEWLERY
This course is designed to give students opportunities to the many areas of jewelry making. Students will experience
the traditional values of many cultures in how they use jewelry as personal adornment. Materials include meta1,
wood, bone, semiprecious stone, and found objects.
Experiences include hand-forging metal, cut and pierce fabrication-using multi-metals, bezel stone setting, lost wax
casting, enameling, and etching.
Second semester is designed for the continuing advanced student who has completed the beginning level of jewelry.
High expectations along with advanced techniques will be included.

58. Photography – Summer School
Photography is a course designed for the student who is interested in the art, science, history and technology of the
photographic process. Students will learn to see photographically through an exploration of the basic tools,
techniques and aesthetics of digital photography, with an emphasis on creative use of camera controls, exposure,
digital imaging software, and an awareness of issues in contemporary photography. Students will also learn how to
edit, process and manipulate digital images for use in different applications including the web, print, video, and
computer applications using Adobe Photoshop and photo quality printers. A major emphasis of the course will be to
develop and increased awareness of visual literacy as a means of understanding and creating visual images. There
will be a strong online learning component to this course using Moodle, an open source online learning tool.
Students need to have their own digital camera, preferably one with advanced settings, which allow independent
control of shutter speeds, apertures and exposures. A digital SLR camera is suggested.

63. VIDEO PRODUCTION
This is a project-oriented class that will create a “video yearbook” as well as produce a weekly news and feature
video magazine, AHS TV, which airs on the cable access channel as well as closed circuit at school. They will also
work in teams to produce other video projects such as commercials, music videos, animations and other features.
There will be an emphasis on digital video, using state-of-the-art computer workstations and digital video cameras
to communicate ideas and tell stories.
Video production is a course designed for the student who wishes to learn about the art of video production
elements: The Camera, Composition, Types of Camera Shots and Movements, Shot Sequences, Camera Techniques,
Sound Recording, Editing, Story Board Creation, and Studio Development. All students must master these concepts
and apply them in the preparation of a number of projects that will exhibit their knowledge in a creative and
effective manner.

65. AP STUDIO ART
Advanced Placement art Studio will provide an opportunity for students to pursue and receive credit for college
leve1 course work at the secondary school level. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead,
students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. They chose from one of three distinct
portfolios: 2-D Design, 3-D Design, or a Drawing Portfolio. The portfolios are designed to allow freedom in artistic
expression while keeping in mind that the quality and breadth of the work should reflect first-year college-level
standards. AP courses should address three major concerns that are constants in the teaching of art: (1) a sense of
quality in a student's work; (2) the student's concentration on a particular visual interest or problem; and (3) the
student's need for breadth of experience in the formal, technical, and expressive means of the artist. AP work
should reflect these three areas of concern: quality, concentration, and breadth. The course requires that the
student is self-motivated and may require work time outside of the school day to complete the portfolio
