This document summarizes an Art Deco study project. It involved researching Art Deco inspiration on Tumblr, photographing 3 iconic Deco buildings in Chicago, editing the photos in Lightroom, and sketching over photos to study key design elements like lines, focal points, and repetition. The study revealed techniques like using vertical lines to draw the eye through a scene and employing focal points to tell a continual visual story. More studies were planned to further explore Art Deco design principles.

• Art Deco cues became a theme discovered from
discussing Tumblr inspiration page
• I found 3 iconic Deco Buildings in
Chicago to photograph as a study
6. Photo-Sketches
• Photos were taken of any
visuals that grabbed my
• Then images were narrowed down
to 25 best photographs
• Then photos were edited in
Lightroom to quickly add
attention emotive emphasis
9. • Many images had high repetition
in unbroken parallel lines
• Images were roughly sketched
over to study their line • When compared with found
images from Tumblr, I noticed
properties parallel lines weren’t the only
element that grabbed my
attention
10. • Striking Tumblr images were
taken for sketch study
• Main elements looked for
were Line, Focal Point,
Repetition
• Here I began to see the idea
that deco has “spills” that the
eye is drawn to through
vertical lines
11. • As I studied more images, I
began to see how important
focal points were to the
interest of the image
• The image to the left keeps
the eye traveling through the
scene, telling continual story
• The image to the right made
me realize the gathering
dynamics found in the woman
