Smart Glasses and the Evolution of Human-Computing Interfacesn-tech Research
Within the emerging category of wearable computing, arguably the most characteristic product to emerge is "smart glasses" which mesh the communications capabilities of smartphones with additional visual and other sensual enhancements, including augmented reality. The primary selling feature of smart glasses is their ability to display video, navigation, messaging, augmented reality (AR) applications, and games on a large virtual screen, all completely hands-free. The current poster child for smart glasses is Google’s "Glass" product, but there are more than 20 firms offering smart glasses or planning to do so.
The hands-free nature of smart glasses opens up new possibilities for human-computer interfaces (HCI), drawing from smart phones as well as interfaces developed in other contexts (e.g. virtual reality). Early smart glasses models are leaning on mature and low-cost technologies with notable influence from smartphones; however we see a gradual trend for smart glasses (and other wearable computing devices) to be driven by more natural interface controls, once these technologies have time to mature as well -- and they're getting remarkably close.

Soon gi Park (LetinAR): PinMR: Novel Optical Solution for AR Glasses
LetinAR is a Seoul-based startup developing see-through optical systems for wearable augmented reality devices. Based on our unique pin mirror technology which has quite different approaches from any other existing combiner optics, LetinAR has demonstrated ultrawide field-of-view more than 80 degrees with 8K high resolution. LetinAR also presented a form-factor-oriented glasses prototype device having the same appearance of normal glasses. In this presentation, we introduce a pin mirror technology and its benefits and contributions to wearable AR hardware including high image quality without any degradation, visual comfort supporting correct vergence and accommodation, wide field-of-view providing immersive experience as well as cost effective manufacturing process. We believe that the advantages of the pin mirror technology will not only suffice the optical requirements in future AR devices, but also shorten the beginning of AR/VR/MR era.

Augmented Reality - General conclusions and recommendationsbanholzer76
Augmented realities as an emerging technology offer new opportunities due to several
shifting external conditions or changing forms of social interaction. In order to investigate
possible impacts, trends and relationships the employed method is based on an
environmental scanning and on several semi-structured interviews, conducted with several
technology experts, researchers and futurologists. The process aims to obtain valuable
information on competitors, markets, customers and suppliers as well as on macroeconomic
factors, such as social, economic, technological and political factors.
The main research findings afforded that AR can be seen as a new communication medium
or tool in an early stage level due to several major technical and social challenges and that it
goes along with the evolving information technology. These days one of the most promising
devices for AR applications is the mobile phone, which could open the floodgates for the
mass implementation of AR. With regard to the evolving ubiquity of information and
interactivity through smart things and sensors, AR will provide customized-, perceptional-,
and location-based information. Life and task enhancing services and applications are
assigned big potential in future solutions, which could occur in many areas and industries.
Due to an economical shift towards free business models, often financed by the
advertisement industry, the future development of AR will certainly be affected.
Is XR the next mobile computing platform that has the potential to one day surpass the mobile phone? Forecasters say that by 2023, there will be over 186 million XR Standalone devices (AR/VR) in the world. All these devices will transform industries by making workers more efficient, will change the way we live by making it easier for us to communicate and share and much more. Join us as we reveal findings from our US and China qualitative study and learn what consumers need and want in the next wave of XR devices.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
