Editor's Notes
Slide 1: Vinyl records have been a big influence on my musical career. Growing up, I listened to my father’s record collections of The Steve Miller Band & Earth Wind and Fire, and my cousin’s records when they played Old School House music and Run DMC at home or before a party.
Transition: I built a connection with the music and artists because the sound made them feel real to me.
Slide 2: Then the Digital Age led to the arrival of mp3 files, changing the way we listen and connect with music because of its clear, digital sound and easy access via iTunes or music pirating sites on the Internet.
Transition: that’s why I feel that…
Slide 3: Using MP3 files in today's music culture instead of vinyl records will result in a loss in musical quality and a unique connection between you and the artist.
Slide 4: Unlike mp3 files, Vinyl records can heighten your music experience and appreciation of the songs and artists you love through a tangible, creative product.
Slide 5: : I remember going to record stores to find different music for record sampling. I felt a musical connection with each song, reading over the album covers of artists like Mobb Deep, Nas, and Wu-Tang to learn more about them and their experiences with making the music. I felt like I had a piece of those artists and the creative process of the albums in my hands.
Transition: So I invite you to…
Slide 6: Leave your digital world and open your ears to a new musical experience by visiting your local record store and search for your favorite artist on vinyl!
Slide 7: Switching from mp3 files to vinyl records will give you a better musical experience because you’ll gain:
1) a more quality sound
2) a unique, tangible product
3) and a stronger connection with the artist
Slide 8: First, let’s talk about how Vinyl records give a more quality sound…
Slide 9: According to an article from ClassicVinylRecord.com: Vinyl has a lower dynamic range, or lower volume, than MP3′s. This makes the sound engineering and mixing on a vinyl record more precise and musical, per instrument. On an mp3, every instrument is taken to the loudest point, mixed together, and then compressed to the loudest point overall possible.
Slide 10: This explains why my Pete Rock and CL Smooth records had a softer, warmer sound vs. the clearer, yet louder sounds I heard from the mp3 files of the same songs. Vinyl just made the listening experience more enjoyable for me.
Slide 11: Secondly, you receive a unique, tangible product from the artist…
Slide 12: Time magazine reported that people mostly buy vinyl to get the “Album extras”, such as imaginative graphics, pullout photos and liner notes about the music. One young fan stated that "Alternative rock used to have 16-page booklets and album sleeves, but with iTunes there isn't anything collectible to show I own a piece of this artist"
Slide 13: I felt the same way with my vinyl records, like I had a piece of Nas or Wu-Tang and the creative process that the albums went through in my hands. To me, MP3 files are impersonal, “watered down” versions of the album downloaded from other people, and nothing personal from the artist- So what quality are you really getting? (transition): last but not least…
Slide 14: Great sound + creative piece of work= strong connection with the artist!
Slide 15: When I bought Mobb Deep’s “The Infamous” album on vinyl, I felt a great connection with the group through their songs of growing up in the streets, and album itself was like having a piece of Queensbridge, NY in Chicago! It wasn’t just a listening experience, but more like Mobb Deep and I was having a real conversation and we could relate to each other on different levels.
Slide 16: Vinyl Artist Lobyn Hamilton and John Dankosky’s npr.org interview both agree that there is a sacred ritual that happens with playing vinyl as you take it out the cover, put the needle on the record, and watch it turn- an experience that you don’t get from mp3 files! Lobyn also connects with artists and records in a unique way on his site http://vinylrecordartist.com so check that out!
(transition): It may be a challenge for you to leave your digital comfort zone, but be brave enough to take that first step and…
Slide 18: Switching from mp3 to vinyl will enhance your musical experience with:
1) a more quality sound
2) a unique, tangible product
3) and a stronger connection with the artist
Slide 19: Sticking with your MP3 files will only result in a loss in musical quality and a unique connection between you and the artist.
Slide 20: A news article from Channel4.com said it best: "There is a genuine love for vinyl, or rather what vinyl represents; music that has quality and aims high artistically. Music for people who care about music" so give it a try, your vinyl experience will be priceless! Thank you.
