Spain ruled over Arizona from 1539 until it was yielded to Mexico in 1821. The United States acquired Arizona through the Mexican-American War in 1848 and Arizona officially joined the Union as the 48th state on February 14, 1912. The Navajo people were the first inhabitants of Arizona. Grand Canyon National Park, located in Arizona, contains the Grand Canyon, a gigantic gorge eroded over millions of years by the Colorado River, making it nearly 450km long and up to 2000m deep, the largest gorge in the world.
