Arizona is situated in the
southwestern region of
U.S. It’s the sixth largest
and the 14th most
populous state.
It is bordered by New
Mexico to the
east, Utah to the
north, Nevada and
California to the west,
and Mexico to the south.
The capital and the
largest city is
Phoenix.
Phoenix is the
anchor of the
Phoenix metropolitan
area, also known as
the Valley of the Sun,
which in turn is a part
of the Salt River
Valley.
The original capital of
the Arizona Territory
was not Phoenix. It
was first located in
Navajo Springs, then
alternated between
Prescott and Tucson
until 1889, when
Phoenix was chosen
as a geographic
compromise.
The state's name
appears to originate
from an earlier
Spanish name,
Arizonac, meaning
"small spring“.
Another name is the
state of Grand
Canyon because on
its territory there is a
unique miracle of
the nature – the
Grand Canyon.
It is one of the deepest
canyons in the world.
It is 277 miles (446
kilometres) in length.
The Colorado River
runs through the
Grand Canyon, it has
been eroding its steep
sides for millions of
years.
The 13 gold and red
"rays" on Arizona's flag
represent the sun setting
over the western desert
and the original 13
colonies. The center star
signifies copper
production (Arizona
produces more copper
than any other state in
the country). The field of
blue is the same "liberty
blue" as the United
States flag.
Arizona leads the
nation in copper
production. Bisbee,
located in
Tombstone Canyon,
is known as the
Queen of the
Copper Mines.
During its mining
history the town
was the largest city
between Saint Louis
and San Francisco.
The saguaro
cactus blossom
is the official
state flower. The
white flower
blooms on the
tips during May
and June. It is
the largest
American
cactus.
The state’s most
popular natural
wonders include: the
Colorado River,
Saguaro National Park,
Sunset Crater etc.
