This document provides instructions for a two-part research project on the history of art. For the first part, students must research and write a 4-page analysis essay on a piece of art or architecture selected from a provided list. They are required to use at least 6 credible sources, with the exception of internet sources like Google. For the second part, students must create their own interpretation of the selected work in a different medium, then write about both the original work and their reinterpretation in their essay. The project is due on July 30th and an optional draft is due on July 16th for feedback.

Research Project Instructions
▪ Foryourresearch assignment, you will have a two-partproject.Forthe first part, you will be tasked with
researching a piece ofart andauthoring a 4-pageanalysis essay about it. Forthe secondpart, you will be
creating a piece of art that reinterprets your assigned topic artwork in yourowncreative way.
▪ The following will guide you throughthebasic processyou will use to create yourreinterpretation:
1. You will select a workof art or architecture,curatedby me. (See list below).
2. Onceyou’ve chosenyourtopic,perform research onit.
i. Fora 4-page researchproject,you should use no fewerthan 6 credible sources.
ii. With the exception of the databases available throughtheCollege, another University or
College, or the public library, none ofyour sourcesmay comefrom the Internet (i.e. Results
from a Google search,Google Scholar,etc.).
4. Afteryou’ve completed yourresearch and have a goodunderstanding of the piece of art, use what
you’ve learned to create yourown interpretationofit.
i. You may, and in factare encouragedto,change the medium from the original work of art
to yourown.
i. Forinstance, if you choosea painting as your topic,you may reinterpret that as a
painting, a song,a film, etc.
ii. Be sure the medium you choosecatersto your ownabilities and interests, notthe original
artist’s.
iii. Possible media to considerforyour interpretation include photography,fashiondesign,
painting, dance,sculpture,modeling, film, or poetry.
i. Be creative and “think outside the box”!
ii. Youwill needto photograph your work for submissionif is not writtenor a
digital file.
5. Finally, write a researchpaper that first discusses the original artwork, as you understandit from
yourresearch, as well s
i. This section shouldmake upthe bulk of yourpaper’s length – at least 3 pages.
ii. Inaddition, you shouldnot use first-or second-personpoint-of-view whenwritingthis
section ofyourpaper – instead use the “academic third-person”. Insteadof “I think that this
represents”, try using“One couldinterpret this to mean”.
iii. Afteranalyzing the original artwork,then discussyourowninterpretation withinthe final
page(s) ofyouressay. Be sureto explain yourownperspective and artistic choices.This is
the only section ofyourpaper in whichyou are allowed to use first-personpoint-of-view
(i.e. “Aftercompleting my research onExekias, I concludedthat…”).
iv. Collectively, the written bodyof youressay should total 4 full bodypages.
v. Yourtext shouldbe double-spaced,set in Times New Romansize 12 font,and have
standard 1”margins.
vi. Use properMLA style citation for in-text citations, the WorksCited page, andthe cover
page (referto attached MLA style guide forhelp).
