Razor s Edge
A handful of conflicted characters, a substantial amount of drama, and a dash of enlightenment
this is what makes up The Razor s Edge by W. Somerset Maugham. After initial character
introduction, this book quickly reveals how unwise it is to put complete faith in first
impressions. At first glance, Laurence Darrell and Isabel Bradley appear to be the epitome of an
early 1900s couple: young, naive, and extremely in love. Looking closer, Isabel seems to be the
one in control of their relationship. Larry is dependent upon Isabel for companionship, having
grown up without a true family. Isabel has always been extremely naive, obsessed, and driven by
personal gain, but Larry s perspective of Isabel changes, as the novel progresses, from the... Show

Basically she believed she was slumming it. When confronted with Sophie s change in lifestyle,
Isabel immediately loses the front she puts on by declaring, If she went to pieces it s because
there was a rotten streak in her. She was naturally unbalanced; even her love for Bob was
exaggerated. If she d had character she d have been able to make something of life (197). When
Isabel deliberately targets Sophie, Larry reflects back and can t help but think fondly of the girl
and young woman he once knew. Every word she says pushes him farther away from her, showing
him just how judgemental and shallow she actually is. He begins to see the reality of what he grew

Disparities In The Disturbing Labor Market
From 1950 to 2018, there are very little changes in the disturbing labor market, in fact, today
trends have stopped flowing and the wage gap between races may be the most disheartening.
Moreover, the gap economics and wages have become even more disparity. Right after World War
II, many Americans were encouraged by the steady and significant economic progress, including
for Blacks. In 1950, many big factories just start up and need workers So, many African American
were offered the steady wages with higher than the pay earned by there parents. But, still, under Jim
Crow, African Americans were relegated to the status of second class citizens. African Americans
were not allowed to run machinery or promote it. So, even though they were offered

Essay On How To Play 3rb Base
Teach young kids to play 3rb base takes special care an instruction because it requires a different
skill set that the other infield positions. Even at the Little League level, the third base position
requires quick reflexes and a strong throwing arm. There are several aspects of the position that are
important to stress and ingrain in your young player from the first time they field the position in
practice.
Positioning 2
Proper Ready Stance 3
A hard hit ball will reach the third baseman much quicker than any other position on the diamond
so being ready to field the position is a key to success. A third baseman s ready stance should be
balanced, perched on the balls of his feet with his glove open and as close to the ground as
possible. Your player needs to learn to keep his head up, lean his back forward with our arching it
or shifting his balance to the from, and have his throwing hand next to his glove ready to trap any
ground ball that he looks into his glove. During practice, it is important to remind your young
player no to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you watch baseball played at a high level, you will see that the third baseman will take two or
three steps onto the infield grass to anticipate the bunt, and then another step or two forward as the
pitch approaches the plate. We advise that you to avoid this technique and play your young infielder
even with the third base bag in a bunt situation. Bunt situations are often less defined in Little
League games. While some coaches try to emulate the major league game, there will be many times
will a player will swing away or show bunt to draw the infielders in before swinging at a pitch. If
a third baseman is moving forward with the pitch in anticipation of a bunt, he may be put in harm
s way should a batter be swinging away. It is generally a good idea to err on the side of caution
when it comes to the safety of young players learning the

Comparison Of Robert Gross s The Minutemen And Their World
The Minutemen and Their World by Robert Gross tells the story of the common man in Concord,
Massachusetts before and after April 19, 1775. The book offers a glimpse of the people s lives
during the colonial period, creating a context for the American Revolution through social history
and the settlers ordinary lives before the fateful shot heard around the world. Gross shows how the
town of Concord majorly changed; he depicts the life of the people to show the bigger picture of
the American Revolutionas it affected not only the lives of the militiamen and delegates, but the
ordinary townspeople as well. Gross argues that as the battle for independence began, it had a
significant impact on the Revolution as it transformed from a quiet country town into an important
revolutionary hub. Concord was like any other small town at the time before the Revolution; its
inhabitants were concerned with only the issues of their city as many lived simple lives in which
they farmed and took care of their families. The town was mostly populated by Puritan English
settlers and families, many of which became wealthy. Thus, the... Show more content on

to its geography, Concord became the place in which the government of Massachusetts chose to
store military supplies. The town was also a good strategic spot for battle as there were only two
roads where one could get into the town which made it easy to defend themselves. The militarized

Development And Evaluation Of Cognition Based Interventions
PhD upgrade overview In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the development and
evaluation of cognition based interventions (CBIs) for people with dementia in improving
cognition, and quality of life (QoL). However, little is known about the effects of these
interventions for carers who are actively involved and participate in CBIs alongside their relative.
In addition, it has been argued that engaging family carers in the therapeutic process is important
as it has the potential to improve mutual understanding and enhance carer well being. My PhD
research aims to evaluate the effects of carer involvement in CBIs for people with dementia on
carer well being. This report presents the progress my research which comprises... Show more

Chapter five describes a qualitative study which I conducted to explore the experiences and
perspectives of people with dementia and their carers while taking part in the iCST intervention.
Chapter six reports on my personal development and achievements and my PhD progress since
my starting date which was the 29th January 2013. Advancing age remains the single most
important risk factor for developing dementia (Luengo Fernandex, Leal, Gray 2010). It is
estimated that there are currently over 46 million people living with dementia worldwide
(World Alzheimer Report 2015), with a total of 835,000 people living with dementia in the UK
alone (Alzheimer s Society, 2014). Dementia is a major cause of disability for older people
(WHO, Dementia A Public Health Priority 2012). Dementia also remains a greatest challenge
for the society and has a huge economic impact on the health care system, people with dementia
and their families (Dowrick 2014). Alzheimer s disease (AD) is the most common cause of
dementia, accounting for up to 60% of all cases (Burns et al., 2006). AD is an age related
degenerative brain disorder which develops over a period of years, but is not a normal part of
aging (WHO 2015). AD can affect individuals in different ways, but for most people symptoms

Positive And Negative Effects Of Colonialism In Africa
Africa, although it is the mother of all the continents and is the origin of humankind, is considered
the most misunderstood continent that has gone through centuries of strife and exploitation from
other countries all over the world. Since the beginning of slavery in Africa in the medieval times,
many changes in Africahave occurred in a social and economic standpoint in relations to other
countries and within the native land itself by causing colonialism, which is the process of taking
control of another area politically while also using their land. Colonialism has had a negative effect
on Africa both socially, politically, and economically and can be fixed with the help of other
countries. Africa in and of itself was the mighty continent before slaveryand colonialism. Africa
serves as the Mater Hominum and the Mater Continentium, or the creator of the first humans and
the mother continent. It is regarded in the book African Foreign Policy and Diplomacy from
Antiquity to the 21st Century, written by Dr. Daniel Don Nanjira, that Africa is the first cradle of
the humankind, which makes it the only continent in the world to have the whole human species
inhabit the area for at least 5 million years running (Nanjira 7). Therefore, Africa is revered as
the first continent in existence for the world and is the oldest place of human life which in turn
illustrates the value and true importance of the land and people that have for so long been
disregarded and corrupted. Before the use of slavery and colonialism, African had flourishing and
prosperous civilizations that been first established in the Nile River valley like the Kingdoms of
Kerma in the ancient region of Nubia. There are also many other empires that have been known all
over Africa such as the Aksumite, Mali, and Luba empires. These Kingdom s once prospered
before or during slavery and colonialism and had their own cultures and significant contributions to
civilization. The Kingdom of Kerma was established in the northern part of Sudan in 2500 BC and
ended in 1500 BC after the Egyptian invasion of the country after they had already invaded
neighboring lands and allianced states or cities. It is one of the many Kingdoms found in the ancient

Working On A Group Is Not An Easy Thing Working
When working on a group you have to be a listener and a leader at the same time, you have to
make sure you help your group. Being in a group is not an easy thing working with people can be
challenging specially when they work at a different rhythm or even a different way, I ve had
different experiences working in groups but personally I can agree that this groupwas a perfect fit
for me, at the beginning it was very difficult due to the fact that several of our classmates
withdraw the class and did not inform us before they did, this made us change our approach but
at the end we ended up working it out and making it work. The work we did as a group was easy
we decided to meet at the speech lab and brainstorm the best way of presenting our subject; we
decided on assign each of the group members their task and what was going to be the role they
would be playing in the group, the order they would present and with was the subject they were
going to elaborate in. I was in charge of explaining what is a nonverbal message and how
important it is, so I made sure of researching everything I could not only by reading the chapter, but
also by doing some outside research witch gave me a lot of information and understanding of this
subject.
After we all had the area we would concentrate in we decided to meet up again and practice what
we had so far and star with the power point and decide on another visual aid, we decided on doing a
clip on the series lie to me but at the end we could

Analysis Of The Movie The Disneyfication Of Broadway
Introduction A trip to 42nd street circa 1990 was certainly no destination fit for a family. Walls of
graffiti adorn the peeling awnings of storefronts and theatres promise private dances and live nude
women. Porn shops dotted the city block with colorful invitations to sex hotlines and signs
prohibiting entry to anyone under the age of eighteen (Wollman 445). Decades earlier, during the
Prohibition era, speakeasies and brothels lined the city, creating New York s red light district.
Today s Times Square, however, bares no hint of resemblance to its former image of sleaze and
mystery. Neon lights that once illustrated silhouettes of burlesque dancers have since been
fashioned into the welcoming faces of cartoon characters. Signs visible... Show more content on

The commencement of renovations, then, relied heavily on the support of the city and state of New
York s investment, and because of the potential profit to be made from tourism, the state obliged
(Wollman 1). This investment greatly contributed to The Walt DisneyCompany s decision to lease
the New Amsterdam Theatre. Prior to 1994, the theatre spent decades without use and had fallen
into decay. Professor of Performance Studies and academic, Elizabeth Wollman detailed the deal
between Disney and the city in an article analyzing the interaction between theatre and corporations.
She explained:
Disney agreed to spend approximately $6 million to renovate the huge, ninety five year old New
Amsterdam on 42nd Street, Disney would enjoy exclusive use of the New Amsterdam, which it
now occupies under a long term, forty nine year lease and currently uses to house the musical
version of The Lion King. The city and state agreed to lend Disney an additional $28 million in
low interest loans in return for 2 percent of all ticket receipts from shows staged at the theater.
(Wollman 447)
With its acquisition of the theatre Disney opened Beauty and the Beast, a stage musical based on
the company s popular musical film, and not long after its opening did investors such as Time
Warner and Madame Tussauds hop on the 42nd street bandwagon (Nelson 74). The reopening of the
New Amsterdam Theatre marked a transformation to the New Times Square which, as

Immigration Protest
Introduction:
A day without immigrants protest was one that spread an ideal ology throughout businesses and
labor force. The goal of this protest was to unite as immigrants and show what kind of hit the
economy and labor force would take if immigrants weren t there to fuel it. This has taken place
twice in recent history, once on May 1, 2006 and recently on February 21, 2017. One could argue
whether they are successful in their efforts to show how important immigration is to the American
economy.
Background studies:
Immigrants make up 12 percent of the population and more than 17 percent of the working
population. This means that based on population immigrants are more involved in the workforce
than natives themselves. With trump getting elected to Presidency, and his views on immigration
control and it being viewed as discrimination, one could say that he is just putting fuel on the flame.
According to Moriah Butler, Immigration protest are viewed by the general public in a disruptive
manner with people saying that there will never be a right time to protest (Butler 1.)
Jose Andres is a different case in many opinions. Andres owns a restaurant and for the protests he
shut down his business in order to show his employees that he cares about them. According to him
he has workers that have been with him for 25 or more years. He says that he owes it to them to
show that he cares because they have stuck with him in good and bad times, and have put in more

A Analysis On Probabilistic Risk
. Risk AnalysisEquation Chapter 5 Section 1 Probabilistic risk analysis is becoming more and
more important in long term damage estimation for structure. In 2010, American Society of
Civil Engineering (ASCE) defines Risk Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake ground
motion maps for the United States by explicitly targeting a probabilistic 1% risk of collapse in
50 years. Risk analysis is used to combine with earthquake caused death, downtime and repair
cost to estimate seismic performance of bridges and other structures. For instance, according to
[Bazzurro et al,2006], post main shock risk is used to make a decision of repairing a building by
calculating the probability that aftershock ground motion (demand) will exceed the structural
capacity. The goal of this chapter is introducing a method to compute the probabilistic seismic risk
for both main shock and aftershock. Then we can use this to assess risk of specific structure in
practice. The core of probabilistic seismic risk analysis includes two parts: couples (1) ground
motion hazard analysis for the site of interest; (2) the fragility analysis of the structure (located on
that site) with respect to potential ground motion intensities. These two parts have been introduced
in last few chapters, so the next step is to combine all information about demand and capacity of the
structure to compute the final risk results. 5.1. Main shock Risk When the damage state is the

Animals The Music Video a refreshing portrayal of American culture. The pop rock band
Maroon 5 s new hit single Animals from their fifth studio album V is their 10th song to reach the
top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. At first glance it appears to be just another unoriginal pop
rock song; melodic, repetitive. But as we look at the press that surrounds both the song and its
music video we find a controversy surrounding sexual violence and objectification. There can be
no question of a need of such discussion in regards to the themes that Animals the music video
brings to light. That being said, the question in this discussion should not be whether it promotes
these topics but rather if it does a good enough job of making the audience critically aware that
these problems exist. This will be done by looking at the video and its song from a radical
Feminist perspective. Bell Hooks defines Feminism as, a movement to end sexism, sexist
exploitation, and oppression. And the first step of ending these things is showing how they are a
part of our culture which this video does brillintly. The music video is clearly, rather than
promoting rape culture, is not only a sardonic view of the song lyrics themselves and the meaning
behind them but also critiquing the hegemony of the sexually violent culture we live in today. In
this paper I would like to analyze the music video Animals by Maroon 5 from two different angles.

Romeo and Juliet, two lovers are faced with a grave problem when falling in love was inevitable;
however, both sides of their families are participants in an ancient feud against one another, but
even their own blood wont come between the passionate love that they share. For Romeo and Juliet
many choices were made for them, but the madness that drove them to be together would

The Music of Chaka Khan
You know the name the hair and smile but most of all you know the voice. Chaka Khan is a
pioneer in the music world and others inspire to be like her. Chaka Khan was born March 23,
1953 as Yvette Marie Stevens in Chicago, Illinois at Great Lakes Naval Base Hospital. She
stepped into the music world in the 1970s. Her first music group called the Crystalettes was
formed when she was 11 with her sister Yvonne and two other girls from their neighborhood.
The group was influenced by Khan s musical inspirations Billie Holiday and Gladys knight.
Later in the years the sisters joined the Affro arts theatre, a group that toured with Motown
legend Mary Wells. They started another group known as Shades of black while being with the
theatre. In 1968, a Yoruba priest renames her Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi and
her sister is renamed Taka Boom. In 1969, Khan became very active in the black power
movement by joining the Black Panther party. She worked on the organization s free breakfast
program for children. She drops out of school and she sings with the groups Lyfe, Lock Chain, and
Huey The Babysitters. Finally she joins the band Ask Rufuswhose name is taken from a fishing

The Effects Of The Dust Bowl
Alabama was one of the hardest states that was hit by the great depression. It was already the
poorest state. Most people became homeless because they lost their job and couldn t pay their rent.
The homeless then did anything to keep a roof over their head, including making shacks out of
anything, forming Hoovervilles. The more people that were homeless, the more competitive the job
market became. The Dust Bowlwas created by a drought, over plowing of the soil, and the
techniques of farmers. When the farmers plowed the soil, they stripped the soils natural defense
against bad weather, a thick layer of prairie grasses. When the winds picked up, it also picked up
the dark soil. This affected the living conditions on the plains. The dust

Should The Bush Administration Justified In Iraq
The 2003 Invasion of Iraq not only signalled the beginning of the Iraq War, but also demonstrated
the power and unchallenged military dominance of the United States. Unlike the first Gulf War,
many of the US public, media and officials criticized the Bush Administration s decision to invade
Iraq by questioning the legality and the evidence used to justify the war. These arguments as to
whether the Bush Administration was justified in its use of hard power to invade Iraqare diverse and
disputed among many historians. The opinions of several historians including Pollack,
Mearsheimer and Siilberman, in conjunction with the primary accounts of US president George W.

Almost all the US public, media and government officials at the time held a common belief that
Iraq owned WMD. Kenneth Pollack (2004), PhD, a former CIA intelligence analyst and expert
on Middle East politics and military affairs, mentions the common belief that Saddam owned
WMD when he says that the American public and much of the rest of the world believed that
after Saddam Hussein s regime sank, a vast flotsam of weapons of mass destruction would bob
to the surface (p.78). The US government s common agreement that Hussein was holding
WMD was significantly a result of high priority intelligence reports such as the 2002 US
National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) which claimed to have held a 90% level of confidence
that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction (Siilberman, 2015). The importance of these NIE
reports is further supported by Kevin Whitelaw (2004), a prominent American reporter for US
News and World Report, when he says that due to the reports substantial conclusiveness, the
most pivotal document was the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq s weapons (p.24).
Although, the belief that Saddam possessed WMD was not only held by the US government
analysts but also by many officials from the United Nations (UN). According to Pollack nearly
twenty former inspectors from the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) did not
doubt that Iraq was operating a secret centrifugal plant (Pollack, 2004, p.82). Clearly, there was a
common belief before the 2003 invasion that Saddam was in possession of WMD. In fact, Greg
Theilman, who retired as acting director of the nonproliferation office in the State Department s
Intelligence and Research Bureau as the NIE was being drafted, believed that if someone voiced
in 2002 that Iraq may have destroyed its WMD arsenal in the 1990 s

`` Piano `` By D. H. Lawrence And Traveling Through The...
D. H. Lawrence, an English author, and William Stafford, an American writer, lived and wrote
at different times but their chosen subjects were often similar. Piano written by D. H. Lawrence
and Traveling through the Dark by William Stafford show remarkable similarities and
differences in their experiences and emotions. Although Lawrence and Stafford are both
respected poets, their writing styles, and expectations for readers differ significantly. While
Lawrence maintains a feeling of nostalgia and remembrances to keep the reader s attention,
Stafford s pervasive structure includes a bit of darkness and suspense for his readers. These
astute writers are similar in many ways, but they also have significant differences represented in
their messages and delivery methods within the poems. Lawrence and Stafford were rebels in the
literary field. One of Lawrence s most famous novels, Lady Chatterley s Lover defied censorship
standards, and America banned it until the late 1950 s. Piano does not fit into the same mold, it is
a sentimental and loving poem. Critics often refer to Stafford as a pacifist and a conscientious
objector during the war. Traveling through the Dark follows the general style used in his poetry. He
often delivers messages that are direct and bold. Each poet wrote using deceptively simple
language and ideas. Upon looking at these two poems, the reader automatically sees fundamental
differences. In spite of that, once read and analyzed,

Plate Tectonic Analysis
The plate tectonic theory states that rigid plates slowly ride on the molten mantle. The boundaries
between the plates are known to serve as an important mineral resource. Three types of tectonic
plate exist: convergent, divergent and transform boundaries. A convergent boundary represents two
plates moving towards each other mostly forming a subduction. When two plates move away from
each other, a divergent boundary is formed. In transform boundaries, the plates move laterally past
each other (Mission, 2016).
Within the mid ocean ridges forming a divergent boundary, a zone of low pressure is formed
allowing magma to rise to the surface. Potentially valuable metals are present in the hot magma.
The valuable deposits are further concentrated by leaching of metals from water permeating the
rocks (Mission, 2016). The water circulating through the rocks is heated by the magma forming
hydrothermal fluids. The hot hydrothermal fluids form black smokers covering the sea floor and
are rich in sulfur containing minerals, for instance, galena, a lead sulfide, and pyrite, an iron sulfide
(Mission, 2016). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The volcanoes heat up water percolating through the rocks and the dissolved minerals are carried
to surrounding rocks. This kind of deposit represents the majority of world s copper supply
(Mission, 2016). Mineral veins and pegmatite are formed once the magma cools. An example of a
mineral vein is the Mother Lode of the Sierra Nevada containing gold deposits. Once volcanic
mountains from subduction erode, portions of silver, gold or other metals may flow into streams
and their accumulation forms placer deposits. Other resources are the Ophiolites, a rich source of
chromium which is formed from portions of oceanic crust emplaced on continents after subduction
events (Sharma,

William Faulkner. I took this topic a bit differently as written above. I wrote about the relationships
between the family members relating back to the mother and conflicts the family faces to please the
mother. The book itself covers this topic pretty well the mother of the family, Addie, passes away
leaving the family to grant her burial wishes. The story is told in the perspective of the people
that knew her, especially her direct family. Even Addie narrates the story in the beginning before
she passed. In the beginning of the story Addie is very ill and on the verge of dying. Her oldest
son, Cash, is trying to make the best of the situation and decides to use his skills as a builder to
design and construct her coffin. The day he finishes it she passes away causing the family much
distress. Vardaman, the youngest child of Addie is the most confused in my eyes.... Show more

The family agrees to help their father out, to take a trip to Jefferson, and complete the last wish
from their mother. The first real day of their trip takes a major turn for the worst causing the
family to work together to please their mother. A bad flood the previous night causes the family
to lose not only the wagon but the coffin as well. with some help from Tull (a family friend and
bystander at the time) they get the coffin and wagon out before anything is really destroyed. Some
of the characters have to sacrifice something that means a lot to them to afford new mules to

that he has been saving up for new teeth. Cash gives up money he has been saving for a new

INTRODUCTION
In the past, doctors have been diagnosing problems associated with the small intestine such as
cancer, ulcers and polyps by using X rays or exploratory surgery. These techniques are both
unpleasant and painful, as is surgery.
The advancement of our technology today has lead to its effective use and application to the
medical field. One effective and purposeful application of the advancement of technology is the
process of endoscopy, which is used to diagnose and examine the conditions of the gastrointestinal
tract of the patents. It has been reported that this process is done by inserting an 8mm tube through
the mouth, with a camera at one end, and images are shown on nearby monitor, allowing the medics

Data recorder Data recorder is a small portable recording device placed in the recorder pouch,

Compare And Contrast The Landlady And Lamb To The Slaughter
In stories, The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, The Landlady and Lamb to the Slaughter both
by Roald Dahl, ideas of guilt and sanity prevail. In these short stories, the lack of guilt and insanity
create a mental state which not only allows them to commit their crimes but also to do so without
remorse. Poe uses close description and large amounts of figurative language to bring through the
ideas of trust, insanity, lack of guilt and perfect crimes . In contrast, Roald Dahl uses other
figurative language techniques such as juxtaposition and foreshadowing.
In all three horror stories Roald Dahl and Poe explore the lack of guilt. There are direct references to

The Fuel Of The Diesel Engine
The diesel engine has been the number one choice for power, reliable and high fuel economy
worldwide (Jääskeläinen, 2013). However, as petroleum becomes more and more expensive,
the new challenge that has been presented to todays society has been to find a sustainable way to
continue running these engines without relying on diminishing petrol supplies (Connolly, 2013).
The world has turned to biofuels; the use of biodieselcan produce power, performance and
economy, along with assisting in the reduction of emissions and Greenhouse gases. However, its
widespread use has been halted due to the ethical issues surrounding its production. The use of
agricultural land for the use of bio fuels, detriments the mass food crisis and insecurity that the
world faces. Is it really ethical to be using bio fuels to cut carbon emissions, which in turn could
lead to millions of people in Asia starving to death?
The inventor of the diesel engine, Dr. Rudolf Diesel, first conceptualised Biodiesel fuel in 1895.
He generated and demonstrated a diesel engine that used peanut oil as its main fuel source in
1900 at the Paris World Exhibition, as he viewed using vegetable oil fuel as a means to provide
economic growth in remote areas of the world due to widely available agricultural crops as the
source of the fuel (Diesel Service and Supply, 2013). In Australia, the use of bio diesel in the
transport industry has been under much debate. Bio diesel is produced through a process knows as

Essay on The Patriot
The Patriot, written by Robert Rodat, takes place in South Carolina and reveals a widowed father s
love for his family and trying to keep them together, despite the Revolutionary War that had begun.
Trying to keep his demons from reappearing, Benjamin Martin faces his fear of his past coming
back to haunt him after serving in the French and Indian War. Martin is a South Carolina farmer
who lost his wife, Elizabeth, and reluctantly signs up to join the Continental Armyafter his eldest
son, Gabriel joined the regulars to fight against the British. After a battle began on Martin s
plantation, Benjamin helped wounded soldiers from both sides and was approached by William

and fought to the end for the cause of freedom. Between Gabriel s dedication to the cause and
Benjamin Martin s military experience, the dedication of the men fighting, the cause of freedom
was fought on all fronts. However, during the fights, many men were lost, including another of
Benjamin Martin s sons, Gabriel. After Gabriel s death, Martin s fears were solidified and vowed
not to fight for anyone s causes. However, he realized that being a true patriot was the only way to
honor his son s deaths, so he fought for the cause of freedom and was truly victorious in his fights.
While The Patriot was a very successful major motion picture, characters from the movie actually
mirror those of characters that were indeed real. Colonel Tavington s character is based on the life
of Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton the subordinate of Lt. General Charles Earl Cornwallis of the British
Army. Benjamin Martin s character was based on Francis Marion (which is also now a famous
hotel in historic downtown Charleston), also known as Swamp Fox fought Indians. In the movie
Martin and his men destroyed the Indians, however in the reality Marion and just a few of his men
survived.
Not only were there differences in the characters in the movie and those of the real

Lennie s Savior
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, tells the story of Lennie Small and George Milton, who are
two migrant ranch workers, moved from farm to farm in California trying to find new jobs. This
story took place in the United States during the Great Depression. In this essay, I argue that George
should ve shot Lennie because Curley was about to do ten times worse to the poor fella, he got
the better end of the deal. I can still tend the rabbits, Goerge? I didn t mean no harm, George,

George killing Lennie was really a saving of torture for the guy. All he cared about was tending

Jack Frost Short Story
Once upon many a time in an Ice rink, in the North Pole, there was a small boy named Jack
Frost, but goes by Frosty, he was 139 years old which was 16 years in human time, standing at two
feet tall. It was his first time ice skating in his life, Frosty s parents were Canadian guards for Santa.
The father, Anders, was an snowman and the mother, Antonia, was a elf, they both were guards for
Santa for many decades, protecting the reindeer that pull Santa s slay through the air. Frosty was
going to turn 140 on December 24th and he was going to follow in his parent s steps guarding the
reindeer, but then three days after he had turned 54 he got a call from his friend Aksel You are
needed in the ice rink, you are not in any kind of trouble, you are just to come and talk. Frosty then
replied Why, what is happening? Aksel replied with Just come and you will find out what is
happening you need to be here. Later that day, it was 3:00, Frosty was pacing around his room
wondering what this was all about. Twenty minutes passed and he was only five minutes till he
arrived at his destination. It was a time, a group of people approached Frosty. Frosty saw a group
of people with uniforms unsure of what kind or where they had come from, but then Frosty saw
a familiar face, it was Frosty s father Anders! Frosty was then questioned on what he wanted to
do in the Canadian military, he answered I would like to follow in my father s footsteps he
shouted echoing through the rink. Frosty s father was astonished with what Frosty had uttered I
will do whatever it takes to join and I will not give up. Frosty had been waiting for this moment
to be asked to join, Frosty excitedly replied with a strong YES! Six years had passed since he
joined from that day in the rink. Frosty was a in the military, but what he did was almost entirely
different from what he had originally wanted. His father had passed away two years ago during
his training, He was quickly notified about his father s death and was shocked and depressed, but

Plato And St. Augustine
Plato suggested that values such as justice and right conduct are absolute and beyond the realm of
subjective viewpoints. One of his arguments against moral relativism is that it is logically unsound.
Plato proposed a multi layered existence. There is the world of sensory perception, which includes
the physical realities of existence. Platoargued for a higher level of being that he understood as a
world of forms, ideas or concepts. Plato argued that conduct comes from a reference to this world
of forms. By this argument, there is an eternal idea or form of each moral principle, such as justice,
piety or truth. This essay will discuss the ethics of Plato, Socrates and St. Augustine
According to Plato, evil is simply the result of ignorance. He believed that all people are
attempting to do what they understand as good. He believes there are three parts of the soul. There
is a rational and moral part of the soul that loves truth, justice and good. There is a spirited part of
the soul that loves worldly achievement, riches and victory. Lastly, there is an appetitive part of the
soul that craves food and carnal gratification. Plato argued that the rational part of the soul should
rightly be in charge, as it is most in tune with moral value.
Socrates believed that no one does wrong voluntarily. Evil is the result of ignorance. If people
knew what was the right thing to do they would do it. We always choose what we think is the best
or good for us. So, if someone chooses to

Leonora Sutter s Argument Essay Witness
Witness Argument Essay In the story witness the title gives away that there were things that people
saw heard and experienced, some know more than others and that s what makes the story
interesting. One person that witnessed the most was Leonora Sutter.
She was a 12 year old, African American who was engaged with what was happening around her.
Lenora was aware and knew what was going on, which was interesting to know because she is
only 12. She knew that in her community there was a big problem with racism. As she quotes in
the story, I made a pie for Mr. Fields, I don t know if he could see me well enough to judge the
color of my skin. I don t know if my color mattered to him. (witness pg41) Leonora is feeling

It makes you think about if she were to act, feel, and express her feelings in a different way than
what she did in the story, about what could possibly happen and how other characters would
react. Leonora was nice and caring, saying that if she wasn t the nice girl like she was in the
story could ve gotten her in a lot of trouble with the whites. She would ve said things she shouldn
t have and did things that would get herself or others hurt but luckily she was feeling and
expressing smart emotions that helped protect her. If she would have been arrogant she could
have possibly said a rude comment to one of the clan members and that would ve been the end
of her. It is a good thing to stand up for yourself but at this point in time if Leonora was to stand
up for herself she could ve gotten in trouble or hurt, because following along with the story the
Klan members don t care about blacks and they won t put up with anything that is not in their
liking. When she got scared in the story she went and hid in the closet away from the clansmen
burning the cross, instead of telling anyone or telling them to go away, which at the time it was a
smart decision to stay back. (Witness pg. 54) Leonora also has a protective trait which makes her
a more helpful selfless person, if she wouldn t have been that way she wouldn t have saved Esther
from being hit by that train.

Policies and Politics of Government in Charge of a Public...
Policies and Politics of Government in Change of a Public Agency:
Government policy can be described as the declaration that defines the objective of the priorities
and goals of the government. Since these policies outline the rules, role, and procedures, they
develop a framework in which the government and its citizens can carry out their specific duties.
The public policies are created by all governmental levels and target the entire population or
particular groups. The process of developing these policies involves the engagement of
governmental officials and citizens. On the other hand, politics of government provide the platform
for the development, establishment, and implementation of public policy. Therefore, the politics of
government are the platform with which public policies are adopted and implemented.
Governmental policies and politics play a critical role in the realization of change in a public
agency since the policies are developed and implemented at various levels (Dukeshire Thurlow,
2002). Since these policies may range from formal regulations and legislation to informal guidelines
in an agency, understanding them is important in the achievement of change in a public agency. A
Public agency basically functions based on the established policies and politics in the government.
Therefore, the accomplishment of the change in a public agency requires an increased
understanding of the politics and policies of government. It s important to understand

Who I Can t Love My Step Family
Who said I can t love my step family? Society has given blended families or (step family) a
negative connotation, they do not believe step parents and children can have quality relationships.
Relationships are important within the family and play a pivotal role in helping children grow
physically, mentally, and cognitively, which is crucial for development (Kostelnik, Whiren,
Soderman, Gregory, 2009, p.184). Urie Bronfenbrenner states, a familyconsists of systems that

On a national average, 5.1 percent of children under 18 live in a household with at least one step
parent (Kreider, 2003, p. 2). Society, as well as media, has given very little credit to blended
families or the positive impact it could have on a child. Moreover, families start out with a negative
influences that can take destroy their sense of hope. Older children more so than younger children,
go into the new relationship with a negative attitude, behavior issues, and resentment toward their
step parent and sometimes the biological parent (Kostelnik, Whiren, Soderman, Gregory, 2009,
p.184). Competition usually occurs between all parties, (step) parent/child, (biological) parent
/child. The biological dyad usually wins the competition because of their knowledge, history and
interaction that they have built together and attachment that has taken place earlier in life (Dupuis,
2007; Pappernow, 1987). However, stepfamilies are not given the time to develop attachments with
one another. The reorganization of the family is taking place, a two parent home can bring financial
security, less stress, which allows parents to be happier, more nurturing and able to display proper
guidance techniques. Adults possess the skills to build and maintain positive relationships with
multiple individuals at once. Children do not have that ability, but they do have the ability to love
more than one adult at a time, especially if the adult in questions shows reciprocation

1939 at the New York World s Fair, the most popularly visited exhibit, entitled Futurama, depicted
the future as a world shaped by the automobile. In this version of the future, fourteen lane
superhighways intersected 5cities, citizens walked along sidewalks built above roads and parking

Identity Crisis In My Ghana
Reputation is everything to most families in Ghana. My grandparents have always defended their
reputation for decades. This has created a culture whereby the opinions of others about the family
matters more than the actual reality. Living under such circumstances raises expectations and
forces an individual to live by the dictates of society. It creates an identity crisis because you
become who society expects you to be rather than finding your true self.
In the early sixties, during the exodus of professionals from Ghana to Nigeria, my grandparents left
Ghana with my mum to Nigeria. My mum got pregnant with me at age fifteen in Nigeria and to
protect the family image she was sent back to Ghana by my grandparents to live in Ghana with a

After initial character introduction, this book quickly reveals how unwise it is to put complete faith in first impressions. At first glance, Laurence Darrell and Isabel Bradley appear to be the epitome of an early 1900s couple: young, naive, and extremely in love. Looking closer, Isabel seems to be the one in control of their relationship. Larry is dependent upon Isabel for companionship, having grown up without a true family. Gross argues that as the battle for independence began, it had a significant impact on the Revolution as it transformed from a quiet country town into an important revolutionary hub. Concord was like any other small town at the time before the Revolution; its inhabitants were concerned with only the issues of their city as many lived simple lives in which they farmed and took care of their families. The town was mostly populated by Puritan English settlers and families, many of which became wealthy. Thus, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The town was also a good strategic spot for battle as there were only two roads where one could get into the town which made it easy to defend themselves. • 7. Development And Evaluation Of Cognition Based Interventions PhD upgrade overview In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the development and evaluation of cognition based interventions (CBIs) for people with dementia in improving cognition, and quality of life (QoL). However, little is known about the effects of these interventions for carers who are actively involved and participate in CBIs alongside their relative. In addition, it has been argued that engaging family carers in the therapeutic process is important as it has the potential to improve mutual understanding and enhance carer well being. My PhD research aims to evaluate the effects of carer involvement in CBIs for people with dementia on carer well being. This report presents the progress my research which comprises... Chapter five describes a qualitative study which I conducted to explore the experiences and perspectives of people with dementia and their carers while taking part in the iCST intervention. Chapter six reports on my personal development and achievements and my PhD progress since my starting date which was the 29th January 2013. Advancing age remains the single most important risk factor for developing dementia (Luengo Fernandex, Leal, Gray 2010). It is estimated that there are currently over 46 million people living with dementia worldwide (World Alzheimer Report 2015), with a total of 835,000 people living with dementia in the UK alone (Alzheimer s Society, 2014). Dementia is a major cause of disability for older people (WHO, Dementia A Public Health Priority 2012). Dementia also remains a greatest challenge for the society and has a huge economic impact on the health care system, people with dementia and their families (Dowrick 2014). Alzheimer s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for up to 60% of all cases (Burns et al., 2006). AD is an age related degenerative brain disorder which develops over a period of years, but is not a normal part of aging (WHO 2015). • 8. Positive And Negative Effects Of Colonialism In Africa Africa, although it is the mother of all the continents and is the origin of humankind, is considered the most misunderstood continent that has gone through centuries of strife and exploitation from other countries all over the world. Since the beginning of slavery in Africa in the medieval times, many changes in Africahave occurred in a social and economic standpoint in relations to other countries and within the native land itself by causing colonialism, which is the process of taking control of another area politically while also using their land. Colonialism has had a negative effect on Africa both socially, politically, and economically and can be fixed with the help of other countries. Africa in and of itself was the mighty continent before slaveryand colonialism. Africa serves as the Mater Hominum and the Mater Continentium, or the creator of the first humans and the mother continent. It is regarded in the book African Foreign Policy and Diplomacy from Antiquity to the 21st Century, written by Dr. Daniel Don Nanjira, that Africa is the first cradle of the humankind, which makes it the only continent in the world to have the whole human species inhabit the area for at least 5 million years running (Nanjira 7). Therefore, Africa is revered as the first continent in existence for the world and is the oldest place of human life which in turn illustrates the value and true importance of the land and people that have for so long been disregarded and corrupted. Before the use of slavery and colonialism, African had flourishing and prosperous civilizations that been first established in the Nile River valley like the Kingdoms of Kerma in the ancient region of Nubia. There are also many other empires that have been known all over Africa such as the Aksumite, Mali, and Luba empires. These Kingdom s once prospered before or during slavery and colonialism and had their own cultures and significant contributions to civilization. The Kingdom of Kerma was established in the northern part of Sudan in 2500 BC and ended in 1500 BC after the Egyptian invasion of the country after they had already invaded neighboring lands and allianced states or cities. Being in a group is not an easy thing working with people can be challenging specially when they work at a different rhythm or even a different way, I ve had different experiences working in groups but personally I can agree that this groupwas a perfect fit for me, at the beginning it was very difficult due to the fact that several of our classmates withdraw the class and did not inform us before they did, this made us change our approach but at the end we ended up working it out and making it work. The work we did as a group was easy we decided to meet at the speech lab and brainstorm the best way of presenting our subject; we decided on assign each of the group members their task and what was going to be the role they would be playing in the group, the order they would present and with was the subject they were going to elaborate in. I was in charge of explaining what is a nonverbal message and how important it is, so I made sure of researching everything I could not only by reading the chapter, but also by doing some outside research witch gave me a lot of information and understanding of this subject. After we all had the area we would concentrate in we decided to meet up again and practice what we had so far and star with the power point and decide on another visual aid, we decided on doing a clip on the series lie to me but at the end we could ... Walls of graffiti adorn the peeling awnings of storefronts and theatres promise private dances and live nude women. Porn shops dotted the city block with colorful invitations to sex hotlines and signs prohibiting entry to anyone under the age of eighteen (Wollman 445). Decades earlier, during the Prohibition era, speakeasies and brothels lined the city, creating New York s red light district. This investment greatly contributed to The Walt DisneyCompany s decision to lease the New Amsterdam Theatre. Prior to 1994, the theatre spent decades without use and had fallen into decay. Professor of Performance Studies and academic, Elizabeth Wollman detailed the deal between Disney and the city in an article analyzing the interaction between theatre and corporations. She explained: Disney agreed to spend approximately $6 million to renovate the huge, ninety five year old New Amsterdam on 42nd Street, Disney would enjoy exclusive use of the New Amsterdam, which it now occupies under a long term, forty nine year lease and currently uses to house the musical version of The Lion King. The city and state agreed to lend Disney an additional $28 million in low interest loans in return for 2 percent of all ticket receipts from shows staged at the theater. (Wollman 447) With its acquisition of the theatre Disney opened Beauty and the Beast, a stage musical based on the company s popular musical film, and not long after its opening did investors such as Time Warner and Madame Tussauds hop on the 42nd street bandwagon (Nelson 74). The goal of this protest was to unite as immigrants and show what kind of hit the economy and labor force would take if immigrants weren t there to fuel it. This has taken place twice in recent history, once on May 1, 2006 and recently on February 21, 2017. One could argue whether they are successful in their efforts to show how important immigration is to the American economy. Background studies: Immigrants make up 12 percent of the population and more than 17 percent of the working population. This means that based on population immigrants are more involved in the workforce than natives themselves. With trump getting elected to Presidency, and his views on immigration control and it being viewed as discrimination, one could say that he is just putting fuel on the flame. According to Moriah Butler, Immigration protest are viewed by the general public in a disruptive manner with people saying that there will never be a right time to protest (Butler 1.) • 12. A Analysis On Probabilistic Risk . Risk AnalysisEquation Chapter 5 Section 1 Probabilistic risk analysis is becoming more and more important in long term damage estimation for structure. In 2010, American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) defines Risk Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake ground motion maps for the United States by explicitly targeting a probabilistic 1% risk of collapse in 50 years. Risk analysis is used to combine with earthquake caused death, downtime and repair cost to estimate seismic performance of bridges and other structures. For instance, according to [Bazzurro et al,2006], post main shock risk is used to make a decision of repairing a building by calculating the probability that aftershock ground motion (demand) will exceed the structural capacity. The goal of this chapter is introducing a method to compute the probabilistic seismic risk for both main shock and aftershock. Then we can use this to assess risk of specific structure in practice. The core of probabilistic seismic risk analysis includes two parts: couples (1) ground motion hazard analysis for the site of interest; (2) the fragility analysis of the structure (located on that site) with respect to potential ground motion intensities. These two parts have been introduced in last few chapters, so the next step is to combine all information about demand and capacity of the structure to compute the final risk results. 5.1. The pop rock band Maroon 5 s new hit single Animals from their fifth studio album V is their 10th song to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. At first glance it appears to be just another unoriginal pop rock song; melodic, repetitive. But as we look at the press that surrounds both the song and its music video we find a controversy surrounding sexual violence and objectification. There can be no question of a need of such discussion in regards to the themes that Animals the music video brings to light. That being said, the question in this discussion should not be whether it promotes these topics but rather if it does a good enough job of making the audience critically aware that these problems exist. This will be done by looking at the video and its song from a radical Feminist perspective. Bell Hooks defines Feminism as, a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. And the first step of ending these things is showing how they are a part of our culture which this video does brillintly. The music video is clearly, rather than promoting rape culture, is not only a sardonic view of the song lyrics themselves and the meaning behind them but also critiquing the hegemony of the sexually violent culture we live in today. Almost all the US public, media and government officials at the time held a common belief that Iraq owned WMD. Kenneth Pollack (2004), PhD, a former CIA intelligence analyst and expert on Middle East politics and military affairs, mentions the common belief that Saddam owned WMD when he says that the American public and much of the rest of the world believed that after Saddam Hussein s regime sank, a vast flotsam of weapons of mass destruction would bob to the surface (p.78). The US government s common agreement that Hussein was holding WMD was significantly a result of high priority intelligence reports such as the 2002 US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) which claimed to have held a 90% level of confidence that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction (Siilberman, 2015). The importance of these NIE reports is further supported by Kevin Whitelaw (2004), a prominent American reporter for US News and World Report, when he says that due to the reports substantial conclusiveness, the most pivotal document was the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq s weapons (p.24). Although, the belief that Saddam possessed WMD was not only held by the US government analysts but also by many officials from the United Nations (UN). According to Pollack nearly twenty former inspectors from the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) did not doubt that Iraq was operating a secret centrifugal plant (Pollack, 2004, p.82). Clearly, there was a common belief before the 2003 invasion that Saddam was in possession of WMD. Lawrence, an English author, and William Stafford, an American writer, lived and wrote at different times but their chosen subjects were often similar. Piano written by D. H. Lawrence and Traveling through the Dark by William Stafford show remarkable similarities and differences in their experiences and emotions. Although Lawrence and Stafford are both respected poets, their writing styles, and expectations for readers differ significantly. While Lawrence maintains a feeling of nostalgia and remembrances to keep the reader s attention, Stafford s pervasive structure includes a bit of darkness and suspense for his readers. These astute writers are similar in many ways, but they also have significant differences represented in their messages and delivery methods within the poems. Lawrence and Stafford were rebels in the literary field. One of Lawrence s most famous novels, Lady Chatterley s Lover defied censorship standards, and America banned it until the late 1950 s. Piano does not fit into the same mold, it is a sentimental and loving poem. Critics often refer to Stafford as a pacifist and a conscientious objector during the war. Traveling through the Dark follows the general style used in his poetry. He often delivers messages that are direct and bold. Each poet wrote using deceptively simple language and ideas. • 20. Plate Tectonic Analysis The plate tectonic theory states that rigid plates slowly ride on the molten mantle. The boundaries between the plates are known to serve as an important mineral resource. Three types of tectonic plate exist: convergent, divergent and transform boundaries. A convergent boundary represents two plates moving towards each other mostly forming a subduction. When two plates move away from each other, a divergent boundary is formed. In transform boundaries, the plates move laterally past each other (Mission, 2016). Within the mid ocean ridges forming a divergent boundary, a zone of low pressure is formed allowing magma to rise to the surface. Potentially valuable metals are present in the hot magma. The valuable deposits are further concentrated by leaching of metals from water permeating the rocks (Mission, 2016). The water circulating through the rocks is heated by the magma forming hydrothermal fluids. The hot hydrothermal fluids form black smokers covering the sea floor and are rich in sulfur containing minerals, for instance, galena, a lead sulfide, and pyrite, an iron sulfide (Mission, 2016). ... I didn t mean no harm, George, quoted from Lennie. That just shows how innocent he really is, which is another reason that George killing Lennie was really a saving of torture for the guy. • 31. Plato And St. Augustine Plato suggested that values such as justice and right conduct are absolute and beyond the realm of subjective viewpoints. One of his arguments against moral relativism is that it is logically unsound. Plato proposed a multi layered existence. There is the world of sensory perception, which includes the physical realities of existence. Platoargued for a higher level of being that he understood as a world of forms, ideas or concepts. Plato argued that conduct comes from a reference to this world of forms. By this argument, there is an eternal idea or form of each moral principle, such as justice, piety or truth. This essay will discuss the ethics of Plato, Socrates and St. Augustine According to Plato, evil is simply the result of ignorance. He believed that all people are attempting to do what they understand as good. He believes there are three parts of the soul. There is a rational and moral part of the soul that loves truth, justice and good. There is a spirited part of the soul that loves worldly achievement, riches and victory. Lastly, there is an appetitive part of the soul that craves food and carnal gratification. Plato argued that the rational part of the soul should rightly be in charge, as it is most in tune with moral value. Socrates believed that no one does wrong voluntarily. Evil is the result of ignorance. If people knew what was the right thing to do they would do it. We always choose what we think is the best or good for us. So, if someone chooses to ... She would ve said things she shouldn t have and did things that would get herself or others hurt but luckily she was feeling and expressing smart emotions that helped protect her. When she got scared in the story she went and hid in the closet away from the clansmen burning the cross, instead of telling anyone or telling them to go away, which at the time it was a smart decision to stay back. Policies and Politics of Government in Change of a Public Agency: Government policy can be described as the declaration that defines the objective of the priorities and goals of the government. Since these policies outline the rules, role, and procedures, they develop a framework in which the government and its citizens can carry out their specific duties. It creates an identity crisis because you become who society expects you to be rather than finding your true self.
