'Top Challenges We Face In IT Today To Hinder Our Pursuit Of Quality' by Lloy...TEST Huddle
Some people thrive on challenges, while others struggle with how to deal with them. Handled well, challenges can make us stronger in our passion, drive, and determination. Lloyd Roden describes the challenges we face today in software testing and how we can respond in a positive, constructive manner.
One of the challenges Lloyd often sees is identifying and eliminating metrics that lie. While we (hopefully) do not set out to deceive, we must endeavor to employ metrics that have significance, integrity, and operational value. Another challenge test leaders face is providing estimates that have clarity, accuracy, and meaning. Often we omit a vital ingredient when developing test estimates - the quality required in the product.
A third challenge is convincing test managers to actually test regularly to attain credibility and respect with the team they are leading. A further challenge is to see why the use of the term "best practice" can be so damaging.
The document describes a Project Control model based on control theory for solving obstacles through iterative creation of tests and solutions. Boolean logic is used to represent the status of tests and solutions. An error signal drives the creation of additional tests and solutions until all obstacles are resolved when the error equals zero. The process is repeated at each stage and level of a project to systematically solve problems through verification and validation.
Test Managers: How You Can Really Make a DifferenceTechWell
When leading a test team or working in an agile team, becoming a trusted advisor to other stakeholders is paramount. This requires three key skills: earning trust, giving advice, and building relationships. Join Julie Gardiner as she explores each of these skills, describing why and how a trusted advisor develops different “mindsets.” Julie shares a framework of “quick-wins” for test managers and team leaders who need to show the value of testing on projects. To help provide timely, relevant information to stakeholders, she shares seven powerful monitoring and predicting techniques. Julie demonstrates three objective measures showing how testing adds value to organizations. To make sure that everyone is on the same page, Julie urges managers to establish a foundation for testing through well-defined policy statements, agreed to and sanctioned by senior management. Receive a set of spreadsheets and utilities to support your activities as a test manager who really makes a difference.
There are not only one correct solution to many of the tasks we do within testing, we need a toolbox of many different tools and the pragmatism to acknowledge that we cannot use the same every time - there are no one size fits all :-)

QA Fest 2017. Ilari Henrik Aegerter. Complexity Thinking, Cynefin & Why Your ...QAFest
From your own experience it might not come as a surprise that most of today’s testing is unhelpful, filled with unnecessary paper work and folkloric activities. For some reason testing work often does not seem to be very helpful in projects. That is definitely a problem. If you are a tester, your manager might ask you for metrics that don’t make sense to you. And since you are a smart person, you have probably once in a while gamed the system. All that is certainly damaging to the industry. What can you do? This session brings you insight into Complexity Thinking with Dave Snowden’s Cynefin model and ties that to your job as a software tester. It offers you a way to look at software testing from a complexity thinking standpoint of view and gives you tools to argue your case if you are exposed to dysfunctional project settings. In addition to that, we will have some fun with idiotic metrics and to lighten up the serious topic we’ll engage in hilariously entertaining real life examples of bad metrics. To round it up, we’ll propose more meaningful alternatives.

The document discusses 10 signs that an organization's software testing may not be enough. These include having excessive production bugs, bugs found during user acceptance testing, growing bug counts over test cycles, not investing in testing compared to competitors, lacking clear criteria for what constitutes "enough" testing, testers advising against releasing software, weak prevention efforts like code reviews, lack of developer unit testing, frequently reduced testing periods causing deadline problems, and high tester turnover. The document advocates treating testing as risk management, increasing test reuse and automation, and addresses common challenges and questions around software testing.

Rikard Edgren - Testing is an Island - A Software Testing DystopiaTEST Huddle
This document summarizes trends in software testing that could diminish its effectiveness and enjoyment. It notes an increasing focus on verification over validation, precise measurement over subjective judgement, and short-term metrics over long-term quality. This narrowing scope risks making testers isolated and limiting their creativity, motivation and ability to consider the full context of a project. The document advocates a holistic and subjective approach that considers people and intangible factors, not just short-term quantifiable results. Subjectivity and considering the whole system, not just parts, are presented as useful for testing.
In today's fast-paced IT world we are often told to deliver higher quality systems to our customers under challenging time schedules, with fewer resources, and reduced budgets. As test managers and team leaders, we must become more effective and efficient with the resources we are given. We should begin questioning whether all those testing processes really must be executed and whether all that documentation should be produced, or whether some, if not all, can be streamlined. Are test plans really important? Are detailed scripts really useful? How can we create highly productive teams? Based on his upcoming book, Test Management for Busy People, Lloyd reveals how the important tasks can be determined and how time can be allocated to them, while minimizing working on multiple projects simultaneously (a real time waster). Lloyd shares a flexible framework showing which tasks can and should be streamlined so that valuable time can be restored to the busy test manager.
'Team Work Within The Test Team - (E2)Q + p + P = TW' by Malini MohankumarTEST Huddle
Team success depends on balancing autonomy with responsiveness to external factors, rather than solely on hiring stars. Effective teams clearly define goals and roles, communicate well, and foster collaboration, trust and accountability among diverse members. Lack of these traits can lead to quality issues, as seen in the example of tester "Joe" working in isolation without support. Building high-performing teams requires ongoing focus on processes, relationships and adapting to change through lessons learned.

'Test Data Management and Project Quality Go Hand In Hand' by Kristian Fische...TEST Huddle
Traditionally, the testing community has perceived test data the same way most organisations perceive test. Boring, time consuming and none value-adding. But new winds are blowing. Initiated by the complex project and test environments of today, testing departments are now taking the first small steps to recognise the importance of a focused test data management function. Maybe the testing community will too? Realising that we have long passed the good old days where a mainframe test data copy would do the trick, challenges in implementing a TDM function in today’s complex set-ups are many and insidious. And it needs a well executed plan.
This presentation takes outset in experiences and hardships gained from a TDM optimising project and provide a live demo, inspiration and guidelines in moving forward with implementing and optimising a TDM function. The project was run alongside a big-scale on-going SOA programme at a major Danish pension fund. The project focused on three areas: Technical, Process, and People & Communication.
In the Technical area, the project developed a TDM Dashboard. As a main management component, the
Dashboard provides a test data copy function from Production to Test and between test environments. Besides, it offers an overview of the test data in the different applications and environments.
The Process area developed a TDM strategy and optimised the test data processes in order to deliver valid, transversal test data quicker. It focused on a wide range of areas such as production copying, data generation, handling of requirements, data cleaning, profile usage, data pools and data re-use.
The People & Communication area focused on including stakeholders proactive in the test data process and communicating roles and responsibilities as well as new functions and processes.
Not only has the project delivered measurable and visible results, number of defects in Production has been reduced; hereby stressing that a well implemented TDM function with continuous focus on optimising TDM is added value and worth the effort.

Context-Driven Testing (CDT) rejects the notion of generalized “best practices” that apply to all projects, and instead accepts that different practices work best under different circumstances. The third principle of the seven defined in CDT states that people are the most important part of any project’s context. Less of a focus on processes and tools, with more emphasis on people and their collaboration empowers testers with the freedom to make choices about how best to do their job without following a restrictive plan.
In joining the game of workshop and some theory sharing in slides, you will a better understanding of Context-Driven Testing practices, principles and its benefits as well as know how is a nice Marriage of Agile and Context-Driven Testing.

The document provides guidance for managing a team of junior testers. It discusses challenges such as lack of skills and experience in junior testers. It recommends setting clear expectations, providing frequent communication and feedback, ensuring knowledge sharing, and protecting the team to help them succeed. Patience and structure are important, as is repeating key messages, to help junior testers learn and improve. The goal is for the team to work cooperatively toward a common objective.
- The speaker proposes 16 "test axioms" that are intended to provide a framework for testing approaches and represent principles that are context-insensitive and self-evidently true.
- The axioms are grouped into three categories: stakeholders, design, and delivery. The speaker argues the axioms can help testers think critically about testing and identify flaws in arguments.
- It is argued that process improvement models are not effective for improving testing because there is no consensus on best practices and processes must be tailored to context. True improvement requires understanding why current approaches are used given the context.
This document discusses why checklists are better than test cases for documentation in quality assurance. It argues that test cases become overcrowded and focus too much on documentation rather than core functions. Checklists are more time-saving and easy to update. An example compares a test case to a checklist for login/registration flows. The author's company Hipo uses a test pad and robot framework integrated with checklists to share with clients and team members.
Explain why it is important to use KT Problem Analysis to quickly get to a precise problem description and to avoid building biases into problem-solving processes.

Why you Shouldnt Automated But You Will Anyway TEST Huddle
The document discusses automation in software testing. It begins by outlining common claims made about the benefits of automation, such as saving time and improving quality, but argues that these claims often don't hold true. Automation does not inherently save time, guarantee quality, or reduce resources needed. It also does not always save money when development, maintenance, and infrastructure costs are considered. The document provides a formula for determining when automation is worthwhile based on how many times a test case would need to be rerun manually. It concludes by acknowledging that, despite these drawbacks, organizations will still automate testing because it is exciting, managers demand it, and it benefits careers.
In this webinar Carsten will explore the role of the tester in a Scrum team. He will examine where the tester play an important role in Scrum and how you can contribute to a teams performance.

Big Data: The Magic to Attain New HeightsTEST Huddle
This document discusses how big data and data science can be used to attain new heights, likening it to magic. It provides an overview of Ken Johnston's background and experiences in data science. It then discusses six keys to a "big" magic show with big data: trying multiple times, addressing issues with over-counting, experimentation techniques like A/B testing, infrastructure for big data, tools and skills, and security, privacy and fraud protection. The document emphasizes the importance of an assistant to help the data scientist or data engineer with various tasks.
This talk suggests how we might make sense of the tools landscape of the near future, where the pressure to modernise processes and automate is greatest, and what a new test process supported by tools might look like.
Takeaways:
- We need to take machine learning in testing seriously, but it won’t be taking our jobs just yet
- We don’t need more test automation tools; today we need tools that capture tester knowledge
- Tools that that learn and think can’t work for testers until we solve the knowledge capture challenge.

The document discusses Test Driven Development (TDD) and Test Driven Design. It uses the analogy of building a lightsaber and later a Death Star to illustrate the TDD process and benefits. Some benefits mentioned are better test coverage, less debugging, and better design. The document provides tips for practicing TDD including planning ahead, defining boundaries, taking small steps to pass each test, and maintaining discipline. It emphasizes trying TDD in a team and considering Behavior Driven Development (BDD) as well.

Are Your Tests Well-Travelled? Thoughts About Test CoverageTEST Huddle
This document summarizes a presentation on test coverage given by Dorothy Graham. It uses an analogy of travel to different locations to explain what test coverage means and some caveats. Coverage refers to the relationship between tests and the parts of a system being tested, but achieving 100% coverage does not mean everything is tested. There are four caveats discussed: coverage only measures one aspect of testing, a single test can achieve coverage, coverage does not indicate quality, and it only applies to the existing system not missing pieces. The key recommendation is to ask "coverage of what?" when the term is used rather than assuming more coverage is always better.
Growing a Company Test Community: Roles and Paths for TestersTEST Huddle
Over the past three years, our company’s test team has grown from three lonesome testers to a community of nine – with more planned. Since we don’t see testers as “click monkeys”, but as valuable and integrated project members who bring a specific skill set to the table, it’s important for us to choose testers well and to train them in various areas so that they can contribute, grow and see their own career path within testing.
To structure to our internal tester training program, we have been developing role descriptions, education paths and career options for our testers, which I’d like to share with you in this webinar.

It’s the same argument again and again. One side says “team members should all be able to do everything, and the programmers should do their testing and all testers should be writing code”. The other side says “No, that can’t possibly work – programmers don’t know how to test, they don’t have the right mindset”. And on and on it goes.

Testers & Teams on the Agile Fluency™ Journey TEST Huddle
The document discusses the Agile Fluency model, which aims to help teams and testers improve their agile skills and practices over time. It describes a pathway with increasing levels of fluency that provide more benefits, including delivering value, optimizing value, and innovating. Reaching higher levels requires investments in training, coaching, and changing team structures and roles. The model can help organizations determine what level of fluency they need and what investments are required for testing teams to operate at that level.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
