Editor's Notes
Short briefing Swedish Radio Archive Project This project Started – a little over a year ago. Will continue to – at least – summer of 2013
Purpose – to transfer the content of our audio archives --mostly analogue To a digital system And To make this material accessible In a first step to our radio producers in a longer perspective to our audience via Internet depending on copyright issues and regulations will take a while
volumes we are dealing with. Se ovan On top: over 200 000 digital files in our present production system – been stored there since 2005, when Digas was introduced. This is done in a sub-project
Workflow: Librarians go to the store rooms wher the analogue tapes are stored. Take them down Shelf by shelf Put the tape boxes on wagons
Librarians check existing Metadata in the database.
Most tapes and their contents are already registered. Check that everything is OK Correct things that are wrong Add missing infomation
The tapes go in to the migration rooms This: A room for analogue reel tape. We have 5 of these rooms – each with 3 tape machines Can play and record 3 tapes simultanously Done in real time 1 hour takes one hour Recording in 24 bits – 96 kHz – very high quality
To Monitor the recording We use this Ingest station Check the 3 recordings Choose to listen to one of the tracks at a time Dont do any filtering or editing Only check and corrects the angle of the play head on the machine - azimut
DAT station for Digital Audio Tapes 2 rooms – each with a rack of 8 machines. Similar monitor station A bit more complicated when it comes to physical quality and audio quality of the tapes. Compared to reel atpes the DAT tapes are much thinner and with a thin metallic layer. Sometimes the tapes are not playable. Same problem with audio head angle
Final destination -- the Tape Robot Where the migrated files and the metadata is stored
Archive project consists of a number of projects –closely connected: Migration of existing analouge, manual archives We want to integrate the Archive system with our production systems Editing systems Radio scheduling systems Planning systems Music reporting systems etc Build a new search and retrieval system – the existing one is old and complicated Work flows when all systems are integrated – plan for training of the staff
Start using the system by the end of this year Even though all the material is not yet migrated.
