Chairman’s Introduction
Welcome to Sworders’ 2019 newsletter, where we review another eventful year and look forward to what we hope will be an equally eventful 2020.
The year began with the first of two house contents sales, the Collection of Barbara Holliday, removed from ‘The Gales’ in the far, far north west of Cumbria. Mrs Holliday’s particular passion was for the work of late 20th century Royal Academicians. The auction met with an enthusiastic response, a 95% sold rate and was led by works by Mary Fedden and Cumbrian artist Sheila Fell.
The summer brought the contents of Alderley House from Gloucestershire, a quintessentially Cotswold manor house, recently furnished in the English country house style. On offer were the extensive contents, ranging from
a grand piano to a clay pigeon launcher.
In March we opened our London Gallery in Cecil Court, on the edge of Covent Garden; this proved an invaluable asset during our successful Asian Art Auction, which was viewed entirely from there during the week prior to auction.
I am also delighted to have been able to recruit several leading and impressive new members of staff, including Luke Macdonald and Stephen Giles.
Next year begins with the John Barnett Collection of Scales, an exciting new season of 20th Century auctions and the ever-extraordinary Out of the Ordinary auction in February.
Thank you for your much-valued support throughout the year. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during 2020.

During the Renaissance jewelers achieved breakthroughs in shop tools, working areas, methods, and advanced techniques. Successful artists came from serving in strict apprenticeships or grew up working with family or close friends in the trade. Jewelry was in high demand during this period in history. In Florence, Italy there were over forty shops dedicated to producing the finest opal jewelry the world had yet ever seen. It has royal patrons and is sold globally through flagship stores and high-end retailers.

During the Renaissance jewelers achieved breakthroughs in shop tools, working areas, methods, and advanced techniques. Successful artists came from serving in strict apprenticeships or grew up working with family or close friends in the trade. Black opal ring was in high demand during this period in history. In Florence, Italy there were over forty shops dedicated to producing the finest opal jewelry the world had yet ever seen. The style before the Renaissance was called Gothic which was thought to have expelled all of the possible works from it and had given in to the new more elaborate style.

1. Arabel Lebrusan, Biography
Arabel Lebrusan’s statement jewellery is a mix of delicate
metal latticework, excellence of craftsmanship and ethics at
its core.
Previously as Creative Director of Leblas jewellery in Sloane
square, London, and now under her own name, she is com-
mercialising these already iconic pieces, which are worn by
the likes of Princess Letizia of Spain and Sienna and Savan-
nah Miller.
“Filigree is such a delicate, beautiful and feminine tech-
nique. It has a great recognisable look, which I wanted to
make more contemporary. Taking advantage of its vintage
look I created geometric and simple forms, making wearable
jewellery for a modern woman”.
The result is exceptional beautiful statement bangles, rings and earrings. Large pieces which are very light to
wear and have a great visual impact. All those delicate swirls scream “handmade” and her jewellery is to
admire as well as to wear. It is very easy to be seduced by the technique and its look, and as a plus they are all
made with 100% recycled silver.
She has also been selected as one of the first licensees for Fairtrade and Fairmined gold and she offers a great
collection of ethical gold wedding, engagement rings and bespoke service. All made with Canadian diamonds,
Faitrade gemstones and using Ecological Fairtrade and Fairmined gold.
Spanish born Arabel Lebrusan studied gemmology, jewellery and fine arts in Spain and Holland and after many
years of working and travelling around the globe, she finally came to the Uk to do a jewellery master degree at
the acclaimed Central Saint Martins, School of Art and Design, in London.
Her background is in Fashion jewellery and accessories, having worked for many years between the Philippines,
Hong Kong and Europe. These experiences allowed her to explore trends, experimental materials and tech-
niques, but at the same time to learn from the fast passed commercial aspects of fashion jewellery. It wasn’t all
2. a bed of roses, as this opportunity of travelling and visiting jewellery factories also showed her some of the dark
sides of the jewellery industry and their practices, so when she made the jump to fine jewellery, she wanted to
tackle a more ethical jewellery approach.
Her time in Saint Martins allowed her to explore possibilities to create more ethical products and discover
sources of ethical materials. This period also allowed her to drawn inspirations from her own Spanish culture
and to start using the traditional technique of filigree for her designs.
After spending the last 3 years as Creative Director of Leblas jewellery in Sloane street, the brand she started
with her business partner, she decided retail and the shop was not for her and she decided to set up on her
own.
Now are the early beginnings of Arabel Lebrusan jewellery, a wholesale and web-retail based ethical jewellery
brand. But having worn a succession of awards, the Tanzanite Celebration of Life Jewellery Design Awards, the
Goldsmith Design awards and being a finalist for the Uk jewellery Awards for the last 3 year, she is definitely a
new brand to watch.
