Exam Time—Study Tips 7
My name is Davia
Hutchinson and I am an
international student from
the beautiful island of Ja-
maica. I am currently in my
second year and enrolled
in the Nursing Diploma
Program. Being in such a
dynamic program has im-
pacted me in numerous
ways; I have learned to
appreciate and celebrate
the diversity of the many
people I interact with and
how to view life from not
only my own perspective,
but theirs too; to walk in
their shoes.
I have had the opportunity
to work at the Seneca con-
vocation ceremonies
where I assisted in the
dressing area by providing
instructions and helping
the graduates and faculty
in the putting on of gowns
in a timely manner before
the ceremonies. During
the ceremony, my role
was to assist with seating,
which required much or-
ganization and quick
adaptability on my part.
I strongly believe that
learning is an ongoing pro-
cess; and working for con-
vocation has broadened
my horizon in that aspect.
Meeting such diverse and
multicultural individuals
and getting to know their
experience encouraged
me to give above and be-
yond in this role and to
become even more in-
volved in working with the
students on campus.
Currently I work as a
Student Ambassador in
the Student Services
Department at the
Newnham Campus and is
it safe to say that I have
kept my promise. It brings
me joy that I am able to
make a difference in
someone’s life by just tak-
ing the time to listen to
their concerns and needs
as a student.
Outside of my campus
roles, I make time to give
back to my community. I
am a Young Adult leader
for the Malvern Christian
Assembly Young Adult
group.

I am accountable for as-
sisting with event plan-
ning, mentoring young
adults between the ages
of 19 – 24 who may be
struggling with their faith.
This role is truly fulfilling
as not only am I a leader
and mentor, but first, a
friend; giving a listening
ear to their concerns and
struggles in life. Our goal
as Young Adult leaders is
to give back to the com-
munity what God has
blessed us with.
To conclude, Seneca has
been a major stepping
stone for me. It has aided
in the molding the mature
young lady I believe I am
today. I look forward for
many great endeavors that
Seneca has in store for
me.

Reasons to Be Grateful
by Valerie Reiss
"Gratitude feels so good because it is the state of mind
closest to your natural state in which you were born to live."
Abraham-Hicks
“Count your blessings” is simple to the point of stupid—and
powerful to the point of life-altering. Gratitude, that very
specific feeling of thankfulness in your heart, allows you to
see and absorb all you have, forgetting for a moment all you
may lack. It connects your brain with your heart, and gives
you the ground to be more giving, effective, loving human.
Being grateful allows generosity to flow. And many believe it
also makes us more receptive—as in, the more you love what
you have, the more you get what you want.
In the form of surprise blessings a sudden wash of gratitude,
strength, or peace. Grace makes it all doable. It keeps us
breathing when life gets airless. Soft when all feels hard.
Gentle in harshness. Faith renewed, we can be channels of
grace ourselves, giving, serving, and offering where it’s most
needed.
It doesn’t rhyme, but health is balance. It’s equilibrium made
manifest in our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits. And fortu-
nately, it can even be found in the midst of physical illness
and mental balance, because it’s the essence of who we are;
we don’t need to be “well” to feel healthy. And when we do
feel well--well, that’s about the greatest blessing of all.
Sitting by a stream, trekking up a mountain or sitting on a
scraggy patch of park grass can lower our heart rates, soothe
our nervous systems, and make us feel connected to every
part of creation. Nature also reminds us of our wildness--our
inherent, wordless, primal state of being in which we are ex-
actly who we are: mask-less, real, open, free.
Silence is a place where our many voices and chattering selves
can unfold, loosen, expand, allowing us to become centered
in the essential self. And from there we can find healing, listen
to our deepest intuition and hear the wise whispers of the
divine.

The One Thing Successful People Never Do
by Bernard Marr
Success comes in all shapes and colours. You can be successful in your job and career but you
can equally be successful in your marriage, at sports or a hobby. Whatever success you are
after there is one thing all radically successful people have in common:
Their ferocious drive and hunger for success makes them never give up. Successful people (or the people talking or writing
about them) often paint a picture of the perfect ascent to success. In fact, some of the most successful people in business,
entertainment and sport have failed. Many have failed numerous times but they have never given up. Successful people are
able to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and carry on trying. I have collected some examples that should be an inspira-
tion to anyone who aspires to be successful. They show that if you want to succeed you should expect failure along the way. I
actually believe that failure can spur you on and make you try even harder. You could argue that every experience of failure
increases the hunger for success. The truly successful won't be beaten, they take responsibility for failure, learn from it and
start all over from a stronger position.
HEALTH, WELLNESS AND LIFE LESSONS
V
HEALTH, WELLNESS AND LIFE LESSONS
Let's look at some examples, including some of my
fellow LinkedIn influencers:
Henry Ford - the pioneer of modern business entrepre-
neurs and the founder of the Ford Motor Company failed a
number of times on his route to success. His first venture to
build a motor car got dissolved a year and a half after it was
started because the stockholders lost confidence in Henry
Ford. Ford was able to gather enough capital to start again
but a year later pressure from the financiers forced him out
of the company again. Despite the fact that the entire motor
industry had lost faith in him he managed to find another
investor to start the Ford Motor Company - and the rest is
history.
Walt Disney - one of the greatest business leaders who cre-
ated the global Disney empire of film studios, theme parks
and consumer products didn't start off successful. Before
the great success came a number of failures. Believe it or
not, Walt was fired from an early job at the Kansas City Star
Newspaper because he was not creative enough! In 1922 he
started his first company called Laugh-O-Gram. The Kansas
based business would produce cartoons and short advertis-
ing films. In 1923, the business went bankrupt. Walt didn't
give up, he packed up, went to Hollywood and started The
Walt Disney Company.
Richard Branson - He is undoubtedly a successful
entrepreneur with many successful ventures to his name
including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Music and Virgin Active.
However, when he was 16 he dropped out of school to start
a student magazine that didn't do as well as he hoped. He
then set up a mail-order record business which did so well
that he opened his own record shop called Virgin. Along the
way to success came many other failed ventures including
Virgin Cola, Virgin Vodka, Virgin Clothes, Virgin Vie, Virgin
cards, etc.
Oprah Winfrey - who ranks No 1 in the Forbes celebrity list
and is recognized as the queen of entertainment based on
an amazing career as iconic talk show host, media proprie-
tor, actress and producer. In her earlier career she had
numerous set-backs, which included getting fired from her
job as a reporter because she was 'unfit for television',
getting fired as co-anchor for the 6 O'clock weekday news
on WJZ-TV and being demoted to morning TV.
J.K. Rowling - who wrote the Harry Potter books
selling over 400 million copies and making it one of the most
successful and lucrative book and film series ever. However,
like so many writers she received endless rejections from
publishers. Many rejected her manuscript outright for rea-
sons like 'it was far too long for a children's book' or because
'children books never make any money'. J.K. Rowling's story
is even more inspiring because when she started she was a
divorced single mom on welfare.
Bill Gates -co-founder and chairman of Microsoft dropped
out of Harvard and set up a business called Traf-O-Data. The
partnership between him, Paul Allen and Paul Gilbert was
based on a good idea (to read data from roadway traffic
counters and create automated reports on traffic flows) but
a flawed business model that left the company with few
customers. The company ran up losses between 1974 and
1980 before it was closed. However, Bill Gates and Paul
Allen took what they learned and avoided those mistakes
whey they created the Microsoft empire.
History is littered with many more similar examples:
 Milton Hershey failed in his first two attempts to set up
a confectionary business.
 H.J. Heinz set up a company that produced horse radish,
which went bankrupt shortly after.
 Steve Jobs got fired from Apple, the company he found-
ed. Only to return a few years later to turn it into one of
the most successful companies ever.
So, the one thing successful people never do is: Give up! I
hope that this is inspiration and motivation for everyone
who aspires to be successful in whatever way they chose.

Good study habits are essential if you
want to succeed in college. Whether
you’re just beginning college or you’re
looking for that crucial senior year
productivity boost, these study tips for
college students will help you max out
your GPA and get on that honor roll.
1. Good Notes = Good Grades
The correlation between good notes
and good study habits is undeniable.
However, taking good notes doesn’t
come naturally to everyone. The trick is
to record the key points of the lecture
or textbook without writing down too
much extraneous info. If you’re worried
you’re missing important details, feel
free to ask your professor during office
hours. Many students also record lec-
tures so they can listen to them later to
verify their notes; just make sure you
get permission from your professor
first!
2. Stay Organized
Keep a detailed calendar with all your
commitments, including classwork, so-
cial events and extracurricular activities.
This way, you can block out time each
day to study.
Organizing your class materials is also
one of the most important study tips
for college students. Use sticky notes to
remember important textbook pages,
keep your returned assignments, and
make flashcards for key terms. You’ll
thank yourself come exam time!
3. Unplug and Reconnect
This can be tricky, since most students
use their computers for virtually all
their homework. Still, the Internet is the
worst distraction there is, and limiting
time on it is one of the best study tips
for college students. Try to set bounda-
ries for yourself: for example, no Face-
book during class or study time.
4. Don’t Cram
It’s definitely tempting to put off
your studying until the last minute,
but you’re much less likely to retain
information this way. Good study
habits come from pacing yourself.
Try to study a little bit each day, ra-
ther than saving it all for the week
before the exam. This will help you
ward off exhaustion and remember
what you learned.
5. Don’t Over-Study
For most students, “over-studying”
seems (and probably is) impossible.
But if you’re the sort of person who
camps out in the library, you might
be doing more work than you need
to.
Among study tips for college stu-
dents, time management is one of
the most essential. Make sure you’re
studying the key ideas of each lec-
ture or textbook chapter, and avoid
absorbing useless information. If
you’re not sure, meet with your pro-
fessor to make sure you’re practicing
good study habits.
6. Find Your Zone
Everyone has their perfect study en-
vironment. For some, it’s a quiet
reading room, while others prefer
the bustle of a coffee shop. Some
like to listen to music while they
study, and some need complete si-
lence. Try a few different kinds of
environments and see what works
for you.
7. Take a Break!
No, really, you’ve earned it! Take a
ten-minute break every hour or so,
and try to take a day or two off per
week if you can. It’ll help you stay
energized and at peak mental
condition.

In the form of surprise blessings a sudden wash of gratitude, strength, or peace. Grace makes it all doable. It keeps us breathing when life gets airless. Soft when all feels hard. Gentle in harshness. Faith renewed, we can be channels of grace ourselves, giving, serving, and offering where it’s most needed. It doesn’t rhyme, but health is balance. It’s equilibrium made manifest in our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits. And fortu- nately, it can even be found in the midst of physical illness and mental balance, because it’s the essence of who we are; we don’t need to be “well” to feel healthy. And when we do feel well--well, that’s about the greatest blessing of all. Sitting by a stream, trekking up a mountain or sitting on a scraggy patch of park grass can lower our heart rates, soothe our nervous systems, and make us feel connected to every part of creation. Nature also reminds us of our wildness--our inherent, wordless, primal state of being in which we are ex- actly who we are: mask-less, real, open, free. Silence is a place where our many voices and chattering selves can unfold, loosen, expand, allowing us to become centered in the essential self. And from there we can find healing, listen to our deepest intuition and hear the wise whispers of the divine. You can be successful in your job and career but you can equally be successful in your marriage, at sports or a hobby. Whatever success you are after there is one thing all radically successful people have in common: Their ferocious drive and hunger for success makes them never give up. Successful people (or the people talking or writing about them) often paint a picture of the perfect ascent to success. In fact, some of the most successful people in business, entertainment and sport have failed. Many have failed numerous times but they have never given up. Successful people are able to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and carry on trying. I have collected some examples that should be an inspira- tion to anyone who aspires to be successful. They show that if you want to succeed you should expect failure along the way. I actually believe that failure can spur you on and make you try even harder. You could argue that every experience of failure increases the hunger for success. The truly successful won't be beaten, they take responsibility for failure, learn from it and start all over from a stronger position. HEALTH, WELLNESS AND LIFE LESSONS
  • 5. V HEALTH, WELLNESS AND LIFE LESSONS Let's look at some examples, including some of my fellow LinkedIn influencers: Henry Ford - the pioneer of modern business entrepre- neurs and the founder of the Ford Motor Company failed a number of times on his route to success. His first venture to build a motor car got dissolved a year and a half after it was started because the stockholders lost confidence in Henry Ford. Ford was able to gather enough capital to start again but a year later pressure from the financiers forced him out of the company again. Despite the fact that the entire motor industry had lost faith in him he managed to find another investor to start the Ford Motor Company - and the rest is history. Walt Disney - one of the greatest business leaders who cre- ated the global Disney empire of film studios, theme parks and consumer products didn't start off successful. Before the great success came a number of failures. Believe it or not, Walt was fired from an early job at the Kansas City Star Newspaper because he was not creative enough! In 1922 he started his first company called Laugh-O-Gram. The Kansas based business would produce cartoons and short advertis- ing films. In 1923, the business went bankrupt. Walt didn't give up, he packed up, went to Hollywood and started The Walt Disney Company. Richard Branson - He is undoubtedly a successful entrepreneur with many successful ventures to his name including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Music and Virgin Active. However, when he was 16 he dropped out of school to start a student magazine that didn't do as well as he hoped. He then set up a mail-order record business which did so well that he opened his own record shop called Virgin. Along the way to success came many other failed ventures including Virgin Cola, Virgin Vodka, Virgin Clothes, Virgin Vie, Virgin cards, etc. Oprah Winfrey - who ranks No 1 in the Forbes celebrity list and is recognized as the queen of entertainment based on an amazing career as iconic talk show host, media proprie- tor, actress and producer. In her earlier career she had numerous set-backs, which included getting fired from her job as a reporter because she was 'unfit for television', getting fired as co-anchor for the 6 O'clock weekday news on WJZ-TV and being demoted to morning TV. J.K. Rowling - who wrote the Harry Potter books selling over 400 million copies and making it one of the most successful and lucrative book and film series ever. However, like so many writers she received endless rejections from publishers. Many rejected her manuscript outright for rea- sons like 'it was far too long for a children's book' or because 'children books never make any money'. J.K. Rowling's story is even more inspiring because when she started she was a divorced single mom on welfare. Bill Gates -co-founder and chairman of Microsoft dropped out of Harvard and set up a business called Traf-O-Data. The partnership between him, Paul Allen and Paul Gilbert was based on a good idea (to read data from roadway traffic counters and create automated reports on traffic flows) but a flawed business model that left the company with few customers. The company ran up losses between 1974 and 1980 before it was closed. However, Bill Gates and Paul Allen took what they learned and avoided those mistakes whey they created the Microsoft empire. History is littered with many more similar examples:  Milton Hershey failed in his first two attempts to set up a confectionary business.  H.J. Heinz set up a company that produced horse radish, which went bankrupt shortly after.  Steve Jobs got fired from Apple, the company he found- ed. Only to return a few years later to turn it into one of the most successful companies ever. So, the one thing successful people never do is: Give up! I hope that this is inspiration and motivation for everyone who aspires to be successful in whatever way they chose.

  • 7. VII Good study habits are essential if you want to succeed in college. Whether you’re just beginning college or you’re looking for that crucial senior year productivity boost, these study tips for college students will help you max out your GPA and get on that honor roll. 1. Good Notes = Good Grades The correlation between good notes and good study habits is undeniable. However, taking good notes doesn’t come naturally to everyone. The trick is to record the key points of the lecture or textbook without writing down too much extraneous info. If you’re worried you’re missing important details, feel free to ask your professor during office hours. Many students also record lec- tures so they can listen to them later to verify their notes; just make sure you get permission from your professor first! 2. Stay Organized Keep a detailed calendar with all your commitments, including classwork, so- cial events and extracurricular activities. This way, you can block out time each day to study. Organizing your class materials is also one of the most important study tips for college students. Use sticky notes to remember important textbook pages, keep your returned assignments, and make flashcards for key terms. You’ll thank yourself come exam time! 3. Unplug and Reconnect This can be tricky, since most students use their computers for virtually all their homework. Still, the Internet is the worst distraction there is, and limiting time on it is one of the best study tips for college students. Try to set bounda- ries for yourself: for example, no Face- book during class or study time. 4. Don’t Cram It’s definitely tempting to put off your studying until the last minute, but you’re much less likely to retain information this way. Good study habits come from pacing yourself. Try to study a little bit each day, ra- ther than saving it all for the week before the exam. This will help you ward off exhaustion and remember what you learned. 5. Don’t Over-Study For most students, “over-studying” seems (and probably is) impossible. But if you’re the sort of person who camps out in the library, you might be doing more work than you need to. Among study tips for college stu- dents, time management is one of the most essential. Make sure you’re studying the key ideas of each lec- ture or textbook chapter, and avoid absorbing useless information. If you’re not sure, meet with your pro- fessor to make sure you’re practicing good study habits. 6. Find Your Zone Everyone has their perfect study en- vironment. For some, it’s a quiet reading room, while others prefer the bustle of a coffee shop. Some like to listen to music while they study, and some need complete si- lence. Try a few different kinds of environments and see what works for you. 7. Take a Break! No, really, you’ve earned it! Take a ten-minute break every hour or so, and try to take a day or two off per week if you can. It’ll help you stay energized and at peak mental condition.
