App Review
The following is review of two apps that use augmented reality. The TI­Inspire App for
iPads is strictly intended for educational purposes while Google Maps can be adapted
for various lessons. Both include suggestions for how the apps can be used in the
classroom.
TI­Inspire App for iPads
An augmented reality app made specifically for education comes from Texas
Instruments. It is a graphing calculator app made for iPads. Students can import real
world images and add computerized graphs and equations. This is a great app, one I
have used in the classroom before. It gives students the opportunities to make real
world connections and answer their favorite question, “When am I ever going to use
this?” TI­Inspire also makes it easier to make connections to other classes, like
physics. It also promotes cultural diversity. In regards to math, students can view real
images of the Eiffel Tower and calculate its height given an angle of elevation. This can

2. Google Earth & Maps
An augmented reality app that can be adapted for a classroom lesson is Google
Maps or Google Earth. It offers real images of houses, buildings, and streets with
computer generated graphics, like arrows and lines. The user can also view the images
three hundred sixty degrees. It can easily be used in a math or social studies
classroom. For a math lesson, students could map out how to get from point A to point
B. For example, from their school to their house. They can actually see the path on the
screen. Google calculates the distance, but as an extension, they can convert the miles
to feet, yards, and meters. This would be useful in a geography lesson or a cultural
lesson. Students can investigate different regions and compare landforms. Google
