This document provides information about apprenticeships and aims to bust common myths. It contains a quiz asking students to answer questions about average apprentice salaries, typical weekly work/study hours, current UK apprentice numbers, employment rates after finishing, number of industries offering apprenticeships, timing of National Apprenticeship Week, and progression to higher education. Without doing any research, individually, in pairs or groups, answer the
questions below to the best of your ability:
Teacher’s Notes:
Students should write their answers down, keeping them hidden from other teams. They should not use anything to help them answer these questions.

3. Can you bust those myths?
Look over the answers you gave. By creating an apprenticeship shortlist and
exploring the tool, use Unifrog to conduct research into any of the questions you
found difficult to answer. For some you may need to look on apprenticeship

5. Q1. What is the average salary of an
apprentice?
The mean pay for level 2/3 apprentices was
£6.79 per hour. For level 4/5 it was £11.63. The
lowest was in hairdressing at £3.95.

6. Q2. How much time do you think
apprentices spend working / studying
per week?
You will normally be expected to work / study
for 30 hours per week minimum. If you are
under 18 you cannot work more than 8 hours
a day or 40 hours per week.

7. Q3. How many apprentices do you
think there currently are in the UK?
In 2014/15, there were 499,900 apprenticeship
starts in England (the latest available data) The
number of people who were on an
apprenticeship in 2014/15 was 871,800.

8. Q4. What do you think the average employment rate
of apprentices is after they have finished their
apprenticeship?
After finishing, the majority of apprentices (90%) will
stay in employment (including 2% self-employed),
with seven in ten (71%) staying with the same
employer.
Extra info: 85% of apprentices said their ability to do the job had improved, and
83% of apprentices said their career prospects had improved, as a result of
completing their apprenticeship

9. Q5. How many industries do you think you
can do apprenticeships in? (Remember an industry
is fairly broad)
Apprenticeships are available in 1500 job roles,
covering more than 170 industries, from advertising to
youth work and from environmental engineering to
legal.

10. Q6. When is National Apprenticeship
week?
National Apprenticeship week was 14th – 18th
March in 2016. It is around this time each year.
Next year it is scheduled to be 13th – 17th March.

11. Q7. What percentage of apprentices
progress to higher education?
19% of advanced apprentices progress to
higher education.
