Genre Characteristics’
Goodwin’s first point was that the genre of music decides
certain aspects which get added. Within the ‘Alternative Rock’
genre, there are various aspects which generally get used in
music videos of the genre, such as:
• Full-band performances;
• Indexical referencing, and subtle metaphorical storytelling
devices;
• Close-ups of instruments;
• Band performance location that represents the mood and/or
sound of the music.

3. Full-Band Performances
Full-band performances are generally used in ‘Alternative Rock’ music videos because just showing the lead vocalist would
be like not giving the other members of the band any credit. It also introduces all of the members to the viewers/fans, and
lets them get familiar with the entire band -- this is something that seems to be very important with the ‘Rock’ genre. Fans
of this genre often like to know more about how “close” the band members are to each other, what their interests are, et
cetera; the more personal things they know about the band, the more they can bond with their music, and their journey as a
band. In the case of The GazettE, in 2011, they held a concert in Tokyo Dome, one of the largest stadiums on the planet, for
the first time. The tens of thousands of fans in the stadium, and The GazettE themselves, began getting very emotional
during the concert, as the knew how successful the band had become in only a few years -- this being that in only a few
years they became arguably the most popular band in Japanese history.

4. Indexical Referencing, and Subtle
Metaphorical Storytelling Devices
‘Filth in the Beauty’ is possibly about a Father abusing his daughter, sexually. The spinning magnifying
glasses perhaps represent the Father’s spiral into darkness and evil, and the amplification of his greedy
and ‘sexual disgrace’ (lyrics in the song); the magnify glasses could also represent the hunt as perhaps the
daughter tried to escape, and/or fight back. Music videos of this genre often have lots of metaphorical
aspects which could mean more than one thing, which allows bands to leave some song meaning open to
interpretation.

5. Close-Ups of Instruments
Close-ups of instruments are, again, used to give credit to all of the members of
the band. However, they are also used to fill in gaps, and when one instrument is
more predominant than the others, like the part of ‘Filth in the Beauty’ that this
above screen-shot is from.

6. Band Performance Location that
Represents the Mood and/or Sound of
the Music
‘Alternative Rock’ music videos often show the band performing in either the same
location as the narrative, or in a separate location that represents the music, and/or the
meaning of the music. In the ‘Filth in the Beauty’ music video, we see what may be a
dirty-looking parking lot, warehouse, or something similar. This represents the ‘filth’ of
the ‘sexual disgrace’ of which Ruki, their lead vocalist, sings.

7. 2. ‘There is a link between the lyrics
and the visuals’
As previously mentioned, the location used in the video represents the ‘filth’ of the ‘sexual
disgrace’. As well as this, the spinning magnifying glasses that are seen throughout the video, in the
narrative, could represent the Father’s spiral in to darkness and evil, and the amplification of his
greedy and sexual frustration as he realises that he can easily over-power his daughter in order to
get what he wants. Furthermore, the choice of actor reinforces this as he is “over-weight”, which is
symbolic of ‘greed’.

8. 3. ‘There is a link between the music
and the visuals’
The “dirty” sound of the distorted guitars links to the
location, as it is dirty-looking. Also, the deep tones of the
music could somewhat represent the depths of the darkness
in to which the Father is falling.

narrative’
In ‘Alternative Rock’ music videos, the narrative is usually at
least somewhat intriguing. Relating back to the metaphors
used, and the open-to-interpretation narrative, the subtlety of
the narrative is usually supposed to be enticing.

iconography that recurs across their
work’
The GazettE often use bathroom/toilet locations in their music
videos, which implies that they could be significant to the band,
that they are metaphorical, and/or are referring to something.

The male character in the narrative is often seen to be
looking at the camera, as is the female character. This could
be to give the perspective view of the female character,
and/or to make the male seem more threatening.

The magnifying glasses in the narrative of the video could
refer to book, television series, and movie character that is
Sherlock Holmes.
