Curtains have been used since ancient Egypt to divide space and provide privacy. During the Renaissance, glass windows became common and curtains were used to block views into private homes. Modern curtains serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, providing decoration, light control, and privacy. New textile technologies and designs now allow for innovative curtain solutions.

7. Historical context
From the early 3100 B.C. to the 3rd Century B.C., the great Egyptians invented curtains
and used them throughout their entire rule. The very first curtains were made of animal
hides and hung in doorways with hooks.
Although little visual documentary evidence exists from the Early and Middle Ages,
occupants of early homes, particularly in the relative affluence of castles, used woven
textiles to cover doors and windows. These were often tapestries and heavy cloths,
anything to keep out the cold.
It is suspected people used curtain panels to divide rooms, as opposed to our traditional
window treatment use.
Curtains of one sort or another have been used to define space and create privacy.

symbol of the wealth and status of the owner.

10. INTRODUCTION OF GLASS
The Renaissance (14th-17th centuries)
brought life, colour, and light to the
everyday people. Architecture started to
embrace the use of glass panes as
windows, which brought in the light but
also the creepers. For the first time,
people were able to see directly into
another’s private space. Therefore,
those who lived during the Renaissance
used fabrics over the windows for
privacy.
