1) Competitive triathletes took either a betalain-rich beetroot concentrate supplement or placebo for 6 days prior to exercise trials.
2) During the exercise trials, those taking the beetroot supplement had faster 10km running time trial times and faster 5km running time trial times the next day, suggesting improved recovery.
3) Markers of muscle damage and subjective fatigue increased less for those taking the beetroot supplement, further indicating improved recovery.
