2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
1. APA Documentative Research Paper
While constructing my first argumentative research paper in the American Psychological
Association (APA) format I learned numerous skills and of the qualities this format contains. These
attributes are the efficiency of the structure, the use of citations, the utilization of charts, and how I
will apply this knowledge in years to come. When used together these traits create a formal paper
that contains large amounts of information while also maintaining clarity. Structure in a paper is
equivalent to that of a house, one must have a strong yet simple structure for the best long term
result. An APA formatted paper begins with an author's note and a corresponding notice on how to
contact the author with any questions or concerns. Additionally, the paper contains an abstract or a
short summary of the entire text. This enables readers to familiarize...show more content...
As of right now I plan to pursue a doctorate degree of some sort. This means years of
undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate (until I retire) education. In these years I will most
likely have to write papers for classes and maybe even someday publish my own findings. APA
format seems to fit the format of scientifically based information. Essentially this paper will one day
help me pass my classes and potentially even make a little cash along the way. To conclude,
throughout the writing process of the argumentative research paper I learned numerous skills that
have made me a better writer. From the efficiency of the structure, the use of citations, the
utilization of charts, and how I could someday put these skills to real world use. All of these
attributes make writing and understanding a paper much easier. The possibility of using APA format
to expand my education and career gives me as an individual an incentive to understand literature.
All in all APA format is a strong approach to formal and comprehensive

2. APA Style Guidelines
Knowing APA style is important because it gives guidelines and rules that must be followed when
writing a research paper. APA style guidelines suggested that writers use page header, insert number,
abstract, title page and, Times New Roman font 12 pt. Also, it is important to include in–text
citations and references. This format helps writers to prove their credibility, provide clarity and
concise information for readers to follow in a research paper. I am sure after this course I will have a
much better understanding of APA

3. Aspects Of Using Apa Format
The following paper will increase ones knowledge on academic style writing and why APA format
is used. Academic style is used everywhere however, why do we use this form of writing, and why
do we use APA format in writing these papers. What are the most important aspects of using APA
format in our writing? APA is a form ofwriting that is used everywhere; there are specific ways of
using APA format and there are also rules you have to follow. These so
–called rules are set in place
so that people are given credit where credit is do. Therefore when people are working on publishing a
paper it needs to be in APA format so others know that they did not do all the research on their own;
they had help from others before them on the topic. If a certain

4. Using APA Style Analysis
With the self–assessment in this week's reading I had to really become brutally honest with myself.
In order to know where you are in life, it is helpful to self–assess yourself (Bethel University, 2014).
At first, I found myself quickly answering them and when I finished I went back through to make
sure that I did not miss anything. While going back through them I found that I was not being
completely honest with myself. I had to redo some questions but I was happy with the results. This
assessment made me open my eyes to little things that I have not noticed before, which was very
helpful.
I of course had weaknesses as do we all. However, even with the weaknesses that I do have some
stand out more than others. Writing, time...show more content...
With all of the information that we may use for what research we may be doing at the time, it is
important to give credit to whom the credit is due to. Claiming someone else's work as your own is
a serious offense of plagiarism. Plagiarism is an act or instance of using or closely imitating the
language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that
author's work as one's own, as by not crediting the original author (Dictionary.com, 2016).
Some of the challenges I face with APA styleis making sure that I have all the accurate resources
and that I cite them correctly. With all of the different ways to get information; online, textbook,
eBooks, articles etc. making sure that the references are on point can be a bit intimidating. However,
with that being said the advantages of APA are great as well. A huge advantage is in the EBSCO.
When you research something and you find what you need, there is an automatic reference that is
already formatted waiting to be use. Personally, for me, it cannot get any better than that.

5. Apa Style Analysis
It is important to utilize APA style in academic writing. APA formatting provides clarity and
consistency of the academic papers. The guidelines and standard of APA help to use certain structure,
grammar, punctuation and proper language to ease the communication among the students and their
professors. APA style frames the exact format of a document to easily access the required
information. The guidelines of APA format provide credibility to thewriting and gives credit to the
original author by following the in–text citation and adding a reference list page at the end of the
paper. To avoid plagiarism, the students follow APA directions in quoting and paraphrasing their
work.

6. APA Style Analysis
The APA format for writing papers is just one of the two mail writing styles used in the United
States (Gorman, 2014.) Well, let us start off with where APA came from. APA stands for the
American Psychological Association. The APA format began back in 1929 in a brief journal article
(Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association Sixth Edition, 2010) and by setting
standards in writing research papers. The article was written by a number of psychologists at that
time, to set rules for writing and to help ease reading comprehension. So we will be asking how we
write APA papers by first asking the basics and second by, discussing the credibility of thepaper and
then the style guidelines. Then finally, we also discuss how APA protects the writer from plagiarism.
APA Basics...show more content...
First, APA guidelines use a twelve point Times New Roman font (Gorman, 2014.) The APA format
helps the writer to organiize their content, and uses a first person writing style (Gorman, 2014.) A
person can format their citations and their reference pages in the Word program to use easily to
document their papers. Also an APA paper usually have four main sections; title page, abstract page,
the main body of the paper and the reference page (Gorman, 2014.)
Credibility and Style Guidelines
The audience, who is reading this paper or listening from the writer, allows them to focus on your
thoughts and ideas. Plus this format shows that you are aware of the audience and will establish
your credibility. With style guidelines, this type of format helps you get your point of view
across and able to conveyed your research in a concise writing style. The writer can control on
how the readers receive the information and at all times to avoid bias (Gorman, 2014.) Just
remember to use plain language and do not use any kind of schemes or devices in your paper.

Paraphrasing is more acceptable and should be done frequently, again with appropriate references
of the author's name and publication date. Should several paragraphs be from the same reference,
each paragraph needs to have the reference at least once, usually after the first or last sentence.
However, it is appropriate to use multiple references in a paragraph. When this is done, place the
reference after each new reference so that the reader knows from where the information came. It is
critically important to look up the format for referencing in text as well as at the end of the paper.
Several variations exist depending on the type of reference, the number of authors including the use
of et al., and whether or not you are quoting from a paper document or an Internet source. In
addition, the way in which quotes are used varies depending on how the quote is framed in the
sentence and depending on length (especially if more than 40 words). For each reference, look up
the style in the manual until this information is memorized, which will not take long after writing
several papers in this program. For the reference page, notice every comma, every use of
capitalization, italicizing, and other formatting issues. This is where new students make the most
amount of errors, especially with the issue versus the number on journal articles. Finally, it is crucial
that you check the references in text and compare them

9. How To Write A Research Paper In Apa Format
APA Citation Format is a set of formal rules written by the American Psychological Association for
documenting sources when writing research papers for any of the social science disciplines.
The most recent set of guidelines can be found in the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association released in July 2009. The purpose of the manual is to provide
a set of formal conventions that ensure clarity of communication, aid reader comprehension, avoid
plagiarism and build accurate reference citations.
The Basics
When writing a research paper, APA stylerequires that citations are located both in the text of the
body, as well as in a formal reference list section of the document. This article provides some
general guidelines on how in–text citations should be formatted. For a more in–depth explanation,
consult pages 169–179 of the Publication Manual....show more content...
When using APA format follow the author
–date method of in–text citation. This means that the
author's last name and the year of publication for the source document should appear in the text like
(Richards, 2001). A more complete citation should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
When writing your report, if you're just referring to an idea from another source, but not directly
quoting the material, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your
in–text

10. APA Style Of Writing
Style is a reflection of one's inner self. It allows our feelings, thoughts and perceptions to speak for
each of us. But, when it comes to conveying information a standardized style is needed. There are
different standardized styles that are in use but during this essay we will look at the style known as
APA created in 1929 and published by the American Psychological Association (Bethel, 2014).
APA style ofwriting was created with specific rules and guidelines to allow the writings of
professionals to be more consistent to interpretation (Bethel, 2014). The guidelines clearly state how
one is to incorporate citations throughout the text of the essay as well as how to clearly create a
reference listing at the end of a manuscript. Many

The Title of the article should summarize the paper's main idea and identify the variables under
discussion and it shows the relationship between them. The Running head is a shortened version of
the article's full title and it is used to help readers for identifying the titles of published articles. Even
if our paper is not intended for publication, our paper should still have a running head. The Author
note should appear on printed articles and identifies each author's department and institution
affiliation and any other changes in affiliation, contains acknowledgements and any financial support
received. It also provides contact information. An author note is optional for students in writing class
papers, thesis etc. The Abstract is a brief summary of the paper. It allows the readers to quickly
review the main points and purpose of the article. The Introduction presents the problem that the
paper addresses. It introduces the main sources and problems of the

It is very important to use APA formatting of in–text citation and reference as a Bethel University
student. APa formatting will make our articles and essays reliable, as the reader will know exact
source of information. It will also give credit to the author and the publisher. In my opinion that it's
our way to thank the author.APA formatting allows us to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious
academic offense. At Bethel University there are serious consequences for not crediting the author
and the source. They can be anywhere from begin on probation to failing the class. We have a lot

13. Apa Formatting Style Essay
Bethel University requires their students to use APA formatting style/in–text citations making it a
necessity. Some jobs that involve a substantial amount of writing or research required that the author
cite where their resources have come from. It is very important that APA is not only utilized but
utilized correctly because not doing so could cost an individual more than he or she is willing to
pay, meaning that there are consequences to be endured should a student break this rule.
Academically speaking, not citing the sources you chose to use depicts the writer/student in an
un–pleasant light; it means that either you were ignorant to what is correct and acceptable or you
did not care leaving the paper you wrote under unprecedented amounts of scrutiny losing all
credibility. From an instructor's viewpoint, not citing sources properly or at all does not give the
author of the piece you used for your paper or essay the proper credit he or she deserves. Presenting
someone else's ideas thoughts and emotions as your own either out of sheer ignorance or malicious
intent is academic dishonesty. In court, not citing the...show more content...

in the academic setting it's the same concept. Another topic or that peaked my interest in your

Presenting someone else's ideas, thoughts, beliefs or work as your own either out of ignorance or

14. Perfect Apa Format Analysis
To write a perfect APA formatted essay, there are four main steps to guide you. First, the writer
would start by introducing the subject and giving the audience a clear point or points about the topic.
Secondly, the writer should give strong researched material or evidence that supports the topic. In
supporting thoughts, the writer would want to stay clear of making statements to "broad" or
"narrow". "Just as a thesis must be developed with supporting points, each supporting point must be
developed with specific details." (Bethel University, 2013) Third, the writer should harmonize and
combine the material so that it is exactly how it was introduced to the audience. The writer should
arrange points in "chronological or emphatic order." (Bethel

16. APA: American Psychological Association
As we all know, APA is known as American Psychological Association. It is used as a guide for
students to learn how to properly format their paper and sources. This style of writing tells you how
to include the title page, headings, page numbers, in text citations, punctuation, capitalization, italics
and how the references should be formatted. According to the guidelines for APA, the font size
must be 12 pt in Times New Roman, one inch margin and double spaced consistently. If it is not in
double spacing, use the word processor to correct it for you. In text citations and a reference list is
extremely important because you are letting the reader know where you got your information from.

APA Style Sample
APA (American Psychological Association) style is primarily used in the social science disciplines.
It is formatted like MLA, and shows many similarities, but is unique in several key points.
APA uses parenthetical (or in–text) citations within sentences, but rather than indicating the author's
name and page number, APA includes author's name anddate of publication. The page number,
represented with a p. or a pp., is only added to the citation when using a direct quote (not a summary
or paraphrase). If the author's name is mentioned in the sentence, then place the date of publication in
parentheses directly after the name. If the name is...show more content...
All of the interviewees have been called 'exceptions to the norm' (Strong & Porter, 1998, p.
565).
Note the first example paraphrases an author that is named in the sentence, the second example
paraphrases authors that are not named in the sentence, and the third example provides a direct
quote (thus the inclusion of the page numbers) but also does not identify the authors within the
sentence. If the authors were identified within the sentence in the third example, the authors' names
would be followed by the year of publication and only the page numbers would be in the parentheses
at the end of the quote.
Finally, the bibliographic page in APA style differs from MLA, what APA calls the Reference page.
You will notice a few immediate differences from the MLA Works Cited format. With APA you
include the initial of the author's first name rather than the complete name, the publication date
immediately follows the author's name in parentheses, and titles of articles are not surrounded with
quotation marks (however titles of books, magazines, journals, etc are still underlined). The lists are
still alphabetized by author's last name (or title in the absence of an author) and the first line is flush
left while subsequent lines in the same entry are indented in (approximately 5 spaces or one tab). For
journals and magazines, publication title and volume number are both underlined,

18. Importance Of Apa Format
It is important to learn and use APA formatting as a student to prevent plagiarism and to properly
write your paper. APA format also helps guide and reference your paper. When you write a paper
you want to give credit where credit is due. You do that by documenting information you may have
obtained through a video, a quote, or pictures. As a student at Bethel University plagiarism is frown
upon and punishable. You get three offenses and after the third offense you will be expelled from
Bethel Univerity.

19. APA Assignment Analysis
My previous assignment was my first assignment completed in APA format. With APA format,
every information is organized and it made it easier for me to discuss all of the points I wanted to
touch upon on. When I write in MLA format, I have to make an outline and go over it numerous
time to make sure I do not forget anything. On the other hand, in APA format, every heading and
subpoint are bolded, making easier for me to expand on the point.
I can also see why academic research paper uses APA format instead of MLA. The same way I think
the organizational structure in APA format makes it easier for me to write a paper, I also believe it
makes it way easier for the reader to read the research paper.

20. Apa Formatting Reflection
I feel that I need to continue to work on my APA formatting as formatting your writings correctly is
extremely important. I am familiar with the APA formatting as I used this with both my Associates
and my Bachelors degree; however, over time I have found that I am forgetting the basic rules. I
have also always struggled with formating my citations correctly as the formatting depends on the
type of article.
I believe that I will use the Writing Center a great deal throughout the duration of my Masters degree
as I have found myself using this tool often in the past. I plan to utilize the all options in the Writing
Center, although, I believe that I will use the APA Styleand Format section more than any other
