The Romantic period lasted from 1825-1900. It was a time when expression was emphasized and patrons disappeared, leaving musicians and composers to work freelance or in professional and amateur groups. "Miniatures" such as preludes, songs, and etudes became popular. Lieder, meaning "song" in German and also known as the German "art song", grew in popularity. Lieder feature solo voice and piano and combine poetry and music, as exemplified by the works of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, including Schubert's Erlking.
