4. THE SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART IS…
THE ONLY ENCYCLOPEDIC
MUSEUM IN SOUTH TEXAS.
OUR CITY’S CLASSROOM.
A PLACE OF WONDER AND DELIGHT.
CHANGING THE WORLD
ONE MUSEUM VISITOR AT A TIME.
5. Photo by Iris Dimmick
Dear SAMA Friends,
Last year we worked to achieve our goal to be the city’s premier cultural
institution. This ambition begins with our strengths. We have an outstanding
collection that spans the globe and five millennia—the only museum of its kind
in the region. We have an incomparable campus on the San Antonio River. And
we anchor a downtown neighborhood that is transforming itself into a dynamic
place for living, working and playing.
When I look back at the principal exhibitions of last year, they reflect, in many
ways, our vision for the Museum: Picasso’s Guernica tapestry (historic,
important, singular); Adad Hannah (innovative, outspoken, provocative);
SAMA Collects Contemporary (locally and nationally significant); Aphrodite
(beautiful, timeless, in the company of our peers MFA Boston and the Getty).
Life is better in a city with great museums, and we strive to build a great art
museum in every way. Last year we expanded our collections, membership,
funding, key staff and educational outreach, and we deepened our presence
in the community, region and country. We want everyone to know us, not just as
a repository of great art, but as a delightful place to visit.
During our free hours on Tuesday evenings, when upwards of 500 people
stream through our doors (thanks to support from H-E-B), SAMA reaches
the broadest cross-section of our community—something we are strongly
committed to doing. In 2011, a generous grant from the Mays Family Foundation
allowed us to increase our free hours to include Sunday mornings. We also
changed our admission policy on other days so that children 12 and under
are always free.
As part of our mission, we expanded our education department and increased
the resources devoted to K-12 students and teachers. We initiated ground-
breaking partnerships with several under-served schools across the city. In
the process, we have broken the mold and created original programming
that engages students and their families, with the goal of creating lifelong
learners and museum-goers.
Not only is SAMA essential to our city and its people, we also aspire to be
a must-visit site—right up there with the Alamo—for the many tourists who
visit San Antonio every year.
We have much more to accomplish, but our vision is strong, and we are excited
about the future.

8. GREAT VARIETY FOR YOUR ITINERARY
We walked to SAMA from our hotel on the River Walk, which made for a very enjoyable stroll (although you could take a River taxi right to
the entrance if you are on the River Walk). Admission was free since it was a Sunday morning, and we jumped into a docent-led tour that
was just starting when we arrived. The museum has a surprisingly large and interesting array of classical ancient art and ancient Chinese
art, but the modern Hispanic art alone would have been worth the trip.

13. Paul Jacoulet: Views of Korea
August 12 – November 6, 2011
Special Exhibition Gallery, Asian Art
Curator: John Johnston
French-born Paul Jacoulet (1902–1960) spent most of his life in Japan
and was the first foreigner to master printmaking in the Japanese
tradition. Eight Jacoulet prints depicting Korea comprised the second
rotation of his work in the Asian Art Special Exhibitions Gallery.
Seasons of Beauty: Yoshitoshi’s Thirty-two
Aspects of Daily Life
July 13 – November 14, 2011
Special Exhibition Gallery, Asian Art
Curator: John Johnston
The fourth and final season of SAMA’s popular, yearlong exhibition
of Taiso Yoshitoshi’s (1839–1892) Seasons of Beauty: Thirty-two
Aspects of Daily Life featured prints depicting nineteenth-century
Japanese women engaged in daily activities. This final season
included the title page and the two most famous prints in the series:
Drowsy and Strolling.
Animal Instincts: The Photographs of Daniel Lee (above right)
September 29, 2011 – February 19, 2012
Focus Gallery
Curator: David Rubin
This survey exhibition of Daniel Lee’s photography from 1993–2010
explored the artist’s use of digital technology to create hybrids of
human beings and animals, portraying the idea that people often
exhibit behavioral, personality, and physical traits which resemble
those of animals. Lee was born in 1945 in Taiwan, but emigrated to
United States to study art in 1970.
5,000 Years of Chinese Jade Featuring Selections from the National
Museum of History, Taiwan and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery,
Smithsonian Institution (facing page)
October 1, 2011 – February 19, 2012
William L. Cowden Gallery
Curator: John Johnston
This major international exhibition organized by SAMA offered an
opportunity to experience the great breadth of Chinese history
through outstanding works of art executed in jade—ritual objects,
weapons, scholar’s objects, adornments, jewelry and vessels—arranged
chronologically. Primary lenders to the exhibition included the Arthur
M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and the National Museum
of History in Taipei, which contributed 45 outstanding jade works,
including 5 classified as Important National Treasures of Taiwan.
EXHIBITIONS
The extraordinary vision and scholarship of the curators drives the
Museum’s ambitious exhibitions schedule. It takes hundreds—the
whole SAMA community—to make it work: Development, Members
and Donors, Registrar & Collections, Exhibits, Education, Marketing,
Finance & Administration, Facilities & Security, the SAMA Shop,
Volunteers and Docents. SAMA mounted seventeen special exhibitions
in the fiscal year and produced two traveling exhibitions that showcased
our collections at other institutions.

14. Imagenes del Pueblo: Spanish Popular Graphics
October 29, 2011 – June 10, 2012
Golden Gallery
Curator: Marion Oettinger
Over the past twenty years the Museum has assembled a collection
of more than one hundred works of Spanish graphic art produced
during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, most created by
anonymous artists for distribution to the masses. With the
popularization of printing, religious images, romantic stories, and
lurid and often gruesome accounts of crimes and natural disasters
became easily and inexpensively disseminated to the majority of society.
Chinese Art of Cricket-Keeping:
The Ernest K. H. Lee Collection
December 15, 2011 – June 17, 2012
Asian Special Exhibitions Gallery
Curator: John Johnston
Crickets have been kept as pets in China for at least 1,000 years, and
the finest cricket-keeping objects demonstrate an ingenious
combination of function and aesthetics. This exhibition, drawn from
the diverse collection of Dr. Ernest Lee, included cricket cages made
from a wide range of materials, blue-and-white-porcelain food and
water trays, agitators to prepare crickets for fighting, brushes, tongs,
cricket-catchers, fighting arenas, scales, carrying tubes, cricket coffins,
and cricket beds.

Curator: Katherine Luber
In honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the annual Martin Luther King,

the last two hundred years. The works reflected upon the struggles and
triumphs of the African-American artistic community and the broad
range of African-American identities and experiences.
San Antonio Collects: Theodore Gentilz: Mission Life of
San Antonio and Northern Mexico
March 2 – May 20, 2012
Focus Gallery
Curator: Marion Oettinger
Painter and surveyor Theodore Gentilz came to Texas in 1844 and
soon settled in San Antonio, where he became intrigued with the
already ruined but evocative Spanish missions. Focused around five
important paintings that Gentilz left to St. Mary’s University (where
he served as the first art teacher), this exhibition explored the missions,
landscape, and daily life of San Antonio prior to 1900.

Sublime Light: A Survey of American Photographs from
the Permanent Collection
June 2 – August 19, 2012
Focus Gallery
Curator: Karen Baker
This historical survey gathered more than fifty iconic images
from SAMA’s holdings of photography, illustrating the breadth and
vitality of the medium over the last one and one-half centuries. The
exhibition progressed from rare early daguerreotypes, ambrotypes
and tintype prints by largely unknown nineteenth-century
photographers, to works by some of America’s most accomplished
fine-art photographers, such as Margaret Bourke-White, Edward
Steichen, and Paul Strand, to contemporary images that push
digital boundaries.
Rostros de Maria: The Virgin as Archetype and Inspiration
August 18, 2012 – February 20, 2013
Golden Gallery
Curator: Marion Oettinger
Drawing from SAMA’s rich collection of Marian images, this
exhibition illustrated the broad variation of the genre and
demonstrated the agility of religious art to adjust to new times,
places and cultures. Deeply rooted in religious beliefs of the Old
Testament and pre-Christian ritual associated with fecundity,
maternity, nourishment and other core human needs, images of
apparitions of the Virgin express the particular needs and desires
of myriad local cultures.

Adad Hannah: Intimate Encounters
August 31 – December 30, 2012
Focus Gallery
Curator: David Rubin
Canadian artist Adad Hannah creates staged photographs and
video tableaux that reinterpret art-historical masterpieces and raise
questions about the change and evolution of a work’s meaning
over time. For this exhibition, Hannah presented projects created
in response to an antique bust of Eros and Aphrodite, a painting
of Adam and Eve by Albrecht Dürer, and a nude sculpture from The
Burghers of Calais by Auguste Rodin. He also selected a work from
the SAMA collection as inspiration for a new series of photographs
and videos, using volunteers from the San Antonio community as models.

17. Love in Three Capitals
September 7 – December 9, 2012
Asian Special Exhibits Gallery
Curator: John Johnston
Three rival cities of Japan’s Imperial era, Edo, Osaka and Kyoto, were
known respectively as political, commercial and cultural capitals.
Each city had sprawling entertainment districts that included
famous brothels—and the pleasures offered in each city were the
subject of lively comparison. This exhibition focused on a rare
complete set of twelve shunga prints by artist Okumura Masanobu
(1686–1764) depicting sexual encounters in the pleasure quarters
of the three capitals.
Aphrodite and the Gods of Love
September 15, 2012 – February 17, 2013
William L. Cowden Gallery
Curator: Jessica Powers
This groundbreaking exhibition revealed the popular ancient
goddess Aphrodite in her roles as instigator of sexual desire,
patroness of brides, seafarers and warriors, agent of political
harmony, adulterous seductress, and mother to mischievous
Eros. The exhibition featured 125 statues, vases, terracotta and
bronze figures, mirrors and jewelry from the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston’s world-renowned Greek and Roman collection
together with seven breathtaking works from the Museo
Archeologico Nazionale in Naples.

LOANS TO AND FROM
THE COLLECTION
Each year the San Antonio Museum of Art loans works from its collections
to galleries and museums around the country and the world—pieces that
are generally on display for longer periods than works loaned as part of
traveling exhibitions. By sharing our holdings, we take an active part in
the international art scene and extend our cultural reputation to areas
that might otherwise only remember San Antonio for the Alamo. Similarly,
the Museum brings the world to our city, borrowing remarkable works of
art that inform and enrich the lives of our visitors. Here are highlights of
this vital exchange.

25. EDUCATION:
THE MUSEUM IS A CLASSROOM
AND IT’S FREE!
SAMA is a valuable teaching resource for students of all ages.
At the end of this fiscal year we committed to giving no-cost access
to the Museum for school groups. Our standard programs are shaped
specifically to support curriculum (TEKS) requirements across many
subject areas (Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, Math), and we
now create custom programs to suit any student group.
To meet our “not-your-average field trip!” goals, we restructured
our department, adding a Museum Educator for Teacher and School
Programs, and laid the groundwork for another position, Teacher
and School Programs Manager, in 2012-2013.
EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS:
Launched “San Antonio is Your Classroom” pilot program with
P16Plus. This now serves as a model used by P16Plus to improve
reading and academic performance of all San Antonio children.
Brought a new audience to the Museum by partnering with Run
Wild Sports and Synergy Studios to create Run with SAMA, which
combines sport activity with art tours themed on the body in
motion, while increasing awareness of our connection with the
San Antonio River.
Refined and energized our 5-year-long partnership with Good
Samaritan Community Services in the SAMA Alliance Program, an
off-site after-school program with hands-on art based on
SAMA’s collections. Recognized for exemplary outreach by the
American Alliance of Museums for our collaborative Westside mural.
Partnered with the San Antonio River Authority, the San Antonio
Missions National Historical Park, and Judge Nelson Wolf to hold a sell-out
bike tour of the Mission Reach during the Theodore Gentilz exhibition.
Partnered with the Global Film Initiative to screen the 2012 Global
Lens Film Series, which kicks off at MoMA and brings the work of
talented filmmakers from countries with developing film industries to
our audience.
Completed a Family Guide for Aphrodite and the Gods of Love and
Asian Art as part of our goal to offer Family Guides to our collections
and selected exhibitions.
Received a prestigious federal grant from the Institute for Museum
and Library Sciences to conduct an Audience Study. Volunteers
collected approximately 2,000 hours of data to help us make informed
decisions—from marketing to programming—based on audience needs.
Laid the groundwork for an agile volunteer Visitor Services department
to offer tailored customer service. Increased training for volunteers.
Introduced a Visitor Welcome Table during high traffic hours.

26. MEMBERS & DONORS
With the generous and continuing support of individuals, corporations, and foundations,
the San Antonio Museum of Art cares for and expands its collection, presents an ambitious
schedule of exhibitions, maintains its galleries, and offers educational and visitor services
that bring art to life for our broad community.
Essential support comes from membership in the Museum and its Friends of the Collections,
gifts to our Annual Fund, gifts in honor or memory, planned giving and bequests, and
exhibition sponsorships. Each gift is greatly appreciated.
