An annotated bibliography is the full citation of a source followed by notes and commentary
about a source. The word “annotate” means “critical or explanatory notes” and the word “bibliography” means “a list of sources”. Annotations are not the same as abstracts. Abstracts
are purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly/ academic journal articles. Annotations are meant to be critical in addition to being descriptive.
Format:
The format for an annotated bibliography is similar to that of a research paper. Use one-inch margins on all sides, double-space your entries, and arrange each entry in alphabetical order. Hanging Indents are required for citations in the bibliography, as shown below. The first line of the citation starts at the left margin and subsequent lines of the citation will be indented.

This article discusses the problem of unintentional online plagiarism and many
students’ inability to evaluate, critique, synthesize, and credit online sources properly.
Two case studies from different disciplines, which were designed to foster critical evaluation of the Internet and scholarly sources, are discussed in detail. The CARS (Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness, Support) checklist for evaluating research sources is also introduced and applied in these case studies. I found this article useful because much of the content of these case studies can be easily adapted to fit assignments in different academic disciplines. One information literacy assignment in one quarter at college is not enough. If students are expected to use the Internet in a responsible way, educators must provide guidelines and relevant experience that allows students to apply those guidelines in practical ways.

The methodology of a study refers to the procedures that are followed in order to collect and analyze data. Qualitative and quantitative are two broad categories of research methods (Erford, 2015, p. 17). Distinguishing between them is a theme that runs throughout this course. This unit discusses several of the methodological issues, or steps, to be addressed when planning a study. Some of these issues include:
What kind of data to collect (such as participants' perceptions).
How to best collect the data (for example, in-depth semi-structured interviews).
How to select participants.
What kinds of treatments or conditions they will experience.
How to analyze the data.
These decisions determine the research design. "Research designs are types of inquiry within qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches that provide specific direction for procedures in a research design" (Creswell, 2014, p. 12).
Validity, Credibility, and Reliability
Scholar-practitioners are concerned with the overall validity and trustworthiness of the research they read. In quantitative studies, internal validity refers to the degree to which one can infer cause and effect relationships between the independent and dependent variables, while external validity relates to the generalizability of findings. Both are important issues. In qualitative studies, the term validity is less frequently used when discussing the quality or trustworthiness of the research. Rather, the critical consumer of qualitative research is concerned with credibility, dependability, confirmability, verification, and transferability. This unit provides an introduction to methodological issues in counseling research. These issues will be revisited when you study specific research designs. As you develop your pre-proposal assignment, you will consider methodological issues as they apply to the research design you have chosen.

In this unit, you will continue locating current empirical articles, which will be used to write the literature review section of your pre-proposal assignment. An annotated bibliography is a tool for organizing the main ideas of the sources you have read. A detailed annotated bibliography can contribute greatly to the ease of writing a literature review. A well-written literature review is a coherent narrative that provides readers with the status of the knowledge base as it relates to your topic. This works best when literature reviews are organized by main ideas. The writer should not present a laundry list of article summaries with no connections being made among them. Instead, think of the literature review as telling the story of your topic, using the studies as support. There will probably be subheadings in the literature review section to indicate the main ideas for the reader. Preparing Annotated Bibliographies
This resource provides general guidelines and specific examples for creating an annotated
bibliography. Please consult your instructor or check the detailed directions for your assignment,
as they may differ from these general guidelines.
Definitions:
A bibliography (also called references in some styles) is a list (usually alphabetical) of sources
(e.g., books, journal articles, reviews, papers, dissertations, and website articles) that are relevant
and valuable to a researcher exploring a topic. It usually just contains citation information
(author(s), year, title, publisher information, etc.). Refer to the appropriate style guide in the
Student Success Center for rules and examples of formatting bibliography/reference entries.
An annotation contains a short summary describing a source and/or an evaluation of it.
Depending on the style, the annotation may directly follow the bibliography entry on the same
line or may follow on the next line and may have a block or first-line paragraph indent. Thus, an
annotated bibliography contains annotations for each of the bibliographic entries. Unless
otherwise directed by your assignment, title it Annotated Bibliography.
Length:
The length of each annotation depends on specific assignment directions. It can be a few
sentences or as long as 150-200 words. Like an abstract, it should not be more than one
paragraph long. It may contain verb phrases with the understanding that the source is the subject,
but preferably, it should contain only complete sentences.
Selecting Sources:
The first step in creating an annotated bibliography is to find relevant sources with valuable
information and ideas about your topic. Refer to your assignment for instructions on the specific
number and type of source required. Often, you will be required to utilize the GCU Library to
locate sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles and scholarly books). The GCU Library can
be accessed at http://library.gcu.edu. Read abstracts of sources to select the most appropriate.
There are a variety of helpful services and tools provided by the GCU Library designed to assist
students with locating the best sources for assignments. Popular services include tutorials, live
webinars, and subject-specific research guides. Librarians are also available via telephone, email,

For those students wishing to compile their source citations in a centralized location with the
ability to assist in the creation of bibliography, RefWorks is an excellent option. This is

Determining Credible Sources
This is by far the most important skill in higher education—selecting credible sources. The reason is that opinions based on the experience of one (usually the person giving the opinion) do not have as much academic credibility as the experience of many. For example, the first sentence in this paragraph is my opinion. It sounds good, but readers must challenge its validity. If that sentence was to be supported by a credible source based on scientific research, then it can almost be taken at face value. Unfortunately, Shen and Liu (2011) disagree with me in a quasi-experimental research study with a sample of fifty college students which concluded that metacognitive skills are most important in higher education. The experiences of 50 seem to have more validity than the experience of one!
In master's studies knowledge of the truth about the world in the industry of the chosen program of study must be of high academic quality (Roberts & Shambrook, 2012). And in academia, quality is widely thought of through a peer review process by “subjecting an author’s scholarly work to scrutiny of others who are considered experts in the same subject area” (Roberts & Shambrook, 2012, p. 34). Students must use primary sources (Wallace, 2008) to support their claims or understanding of a subject.
Peer reviewed material undergo a rigorous process (Roberts & Shambrook, 2012; Wallace, 2008) unlike information found in places like Wikipedia. This is not to say that information found in Wikipedia, or sites like it, is bad and should not be used. It just cannot be used to support claims in academia. I use Wikipedia as my first source of understanding and a starting point to gather my thoughts, but peer-reviewed articles are the ones to provide the necessary support. Wikipedia is a place to quickly find information about anything and everything and it may be the reason why technology savvy students use it as a source of quick information.
Similar to Wikipedia are many sites on the internet. In the courses I teach I have often seen websites which provide students quick information—sometimes in the form of entire essays! Places like MyPaper Writer, MyEssays, and OPPapers are places where information flows from other students who have already submitted their assignments to other universities. I realize that this is more of a plagiarism problem than seeking information from sources of questionable validity, but the bottom line is the same— ...

Introduction
Quantitative research is frequently used in the social sciences because it is quick, relatively inexpensive, and
considered a valid method of inquiry by researchers and academicians. The goals of quantitative research are
to describe the attributes of a group of people, to measure differences between groups, to determine if a
relationship exists between variables, or to predict if one event or factor causes another.
Quantitative studies contain measurable and quanti�able data, a
statistically appropriate sample, use of statistical techniques, and
a structured data collection plan to ensure that the study can be
replicated. Additionally, quantitative studies require the use of
valid and reliable instruments, surveys, or databases to quantify
variables. The research method is deductive, very structured, and
in�exible as often the goal of the researcher is to generalize or
apply the results to other groups and populations besides those
participating in the study. Ultimately, quantitative research offers a systematic and structured process for
answering research questions (Balnaves & Caputi, 2001).
Critically Reading Quantitative Research
Doctoral learners must go through a process of learning how to critically read empirical research. While
reading is a familiar skill to learners, at the doctoral level, it takes on new depth as learners transition to the
mindset of a researcher. The required reading materials will be more dif�cult to read, take more time, and
require learners to improve their reading ef�ciency and critical-thinking skills. Having ample time built in for
reading is crucial to the success of a doctoral student. Reading is the foundation to a dissertation research
project. The �rst 2 years before a proposal is accepted will be spent reading peer-reviewed articles,
dissertations, books, and other scholarly sources that can potentially contribute to the dissertation project. At
the same time, the reading of these materials directly contributes to subject matter expertise of the learner

What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, web pages, and other
documents. The reference citation is listed first and is followed by a brief description. The
annotation informs the reader of the relevance and quality of the sources cited.
What is the purpose of the annotated bibliography?
In certain classes, you will be asked to write an annotated bibliography, which sounds quite
intimidating, but is simply a brief summary of something you have read or consulted during the
course of your research on a given subject. The annotated bibliography has a structured format,
and the purpose for this is to provide the organizational tool you need to keep track of your
research and references. The bibliography may serve a number of purposes: illustrate the quality
of research, provide examples, review literature on a particular subject, or provide further
exploration of the subject.
Provided below is a sample annotated bibliography. Doctoral students should follow the
sample annotated bibliography provided in courses. This sample annotated bibliography may
differ in appearance from formatting required in the School of Advanced Studies.

Preparing Annotated Bibliographies
This resource provides general guidelines and specific examples for creating an annotated
bibliography. Please consult your instructor or check the detailed directions for your assignment,
as they may differ from these general guidelines.
Definitions:
A bibliography (also called references in some styles) is a list (usually alphabetical) of sources
(e.g., books, journal articles, reviews, papers, dissertations, and website articles) that are relevant
and valuable to a researcher exploring a topic. It usually just contains citation information
(author(s), year, title, publisher information, etc.). Refer to the appropriate style guide in the
Student Success Center for rules and examples of formatting bibliography/reference entries.
An annotation contains a short summary describing a source and/or an evaluation of it.
Depending on the style, the annotation may directly follow the bibliography entry on the same
line or may follow on the next line and may have a block or first-line paragraph indent. Thus, an
annotated bibliography contains annotations for each of the bibliographic entries. Unless
otherwise directed by your assignment, title it Annotated Bibliography.
Length:
The length of each annotation depends on specific assignment directions. It can be a few
sentences or as long as 150-200 words. Like an abstract, it should not be more than one
paragraph long. It may contain verb phrases with the understanding that the source is the subject,
but preferably, it should contain only complete sentences.
Selecting Sources:
The first step in creating an annotated bibliography is to find relevant sources with valuable
information and ideas about your topic. Refer to your assignment for instructions on the specific
number and type of source required. Often, you will be required to utilize the GCU Library to
locate sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles and scholarly books). The GCU Library can
be accessed at http://library.gcu.edu. Read abstracts of sources to select the most appropriate.
There are a variety of helpful services and tools provided by the GCU Library designed to assist
students with locating the best sources for assignments. Popular services include tutorials, live
webinars, and subject-specific research guides. Librarians are also available via telephone, email,

For those students wishing to compile their source citations in a centralized location with the
ability to assist in the creation of bibliography, RefWorks is an excellent option. This is

Determining Credible Sources
This is by far the most important skill in higher education—selecting credible sources. The reason is that opinions based on the experience of one (usually the person giving the opinion) do not have as much academic credibility as the experience of many. For example, the first sentence in this paragraph is my opinion. It sounds good, but readers must challenge its validity. If that sentence was to be supported by a credible source based on scientific research, then it can almost be taken at face value. Unfortunately, Shen and Liu (2011) disagree with me in a quasi-experimental research study with a sample of fifty college students which concluded that metacognitive skills are most important in higher education. The experiences of 50 seem to have more validity than the experience of one!
In master's studies knowledge of the truth about the world in the industry of the chosen program of study must be of high academic quality (Roberts & Shambrook, 2012). And in academia, quality is widely thought of through a peer review process by “subjecting an author’s scholarly work to scrutiny of others who are considered experts in the same subject area” (Roberts & Shambrook, 2012, p. 34). Students must use primary sources (Wallace, 2008) to support their claims or understanding of a subject.
Peer reviewed material undergo a rigorous process (Roberts & Shambrook, 2012; Wallace, 2008) unlike information found in places like Wikipedia. This is not to say that information found in Wikipedia, or sites like it, is bad and should not be used. It just cannot be used to support claims in academia. I use Wikipedia as my first source of understanding and a starting point to gather my thoughts, but peer-reviewed articles are the ones to provide the necessary support. Wikipedia is a place to quickly find information about anything and everything and it may be the reason why technology savvy students use it as a source of quick information.
Similar to Wikipedia are many sites on the internet. In the courses I teach I have often seen websites which provide students quick information—sometimes in the form of entire essays! Places like MyPaper Writer, MyEssays, and OPPapers are places where information flows from other students who have already submitted their assignments to other universities. I realize that this is more of a plagiarism problem than seeking information from sources of questionable validity, but the bottom line is the same— ...

Introduction
Quantitative research is frequently used in the social sciences because it is quick, relatively inexpensive, and
considered a valid method of inquiry by researchers and academicians. The goals of quantitative research are
to describe the attributes of a group of people, to measure differences between groups, to determine if a
relationship exists between variables, or to predict if one event or factor causes another.
Quantitative studies contain measurable and quanti�able data, a
statistically appropriate sample, use of statistical techniques, and
a structured data collection plan to ensure that the study can be
replicated. Additionally, quantitative studies require the use of
valid and reliable instruments, surveys, or databases to quantify
variables. The research method is deductive, very structured, and
in�exible as often the goal of the researcher is to generalize or
apply the results to other groups and populations besides those
participating in the study. Ultimately, quantitative research offers a systematic and structured process for
answering research questions (Balnaves & Caputi, 2001).
Critically Reading Quantitative Research
Doctoral learners must go through a process of learning how to critically read empirical research. While
reading is a familiar skill to learners, at the doctoral level, it takes on new depth as learners transition to the
mindset of a researcher. The required reading materials will be more dif�cult to read, take more time, and
require learners to improve their reading ef�ciency and critical-thinking skills. Having ample time built in for
reading is crucial to the success of a doctoral student. Reading is the foundation to a dissertation research
project. The �rst 2 years before a proposal is accepted will be spent reading peer-reviewed articles,
dissertations, books, and other scholarly sources that can potentially contribute to the dissertation project. At
the same time, the reading of these materials directly contributes to subject matter expertise of the learner

What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, web pages, and other
documents. The reference citation is listed first and is followed by a brief description. The
annotation informs the reader of the relevance and quality of the sources cited.
What is the purpose of the annotated bibliography?
In certain classes, you will be asked to write an annotated bibliography, which sounds quite
intimidating, but is simply a brief summary of something you have read or consulted during the
course of your research on a given subject. The annotated bibliography has a structured format,
and the purpose for this is to provide the organizational tool you need to keep track of your
research and references. The bibliography may serve a number of purposes: illustrate the quality
of research, provide examples, review literature on a particular subject, or provide further
exploration of the subject.
Provided below is a sample annotated bibliography. Doctoral students should follow the
sample annotated bibliography provided in courses. This sample annotated bibliography may
differ in appearance from formatting required in the School of Advanced Studies.

This is an exceptional resource for statistics about adult learners and their motivation

2) The writing must be clear, logical, and as free of spelling and grammatical errors as possible. A student should never submit a paper without rereading and proofing it. The word “annotate” means “critical or explanatory notes” and the word “bibliography” means “a list of sources”. Annotations are not the same as abstracts. Abstractsare purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly/ academic journal articles. Annotations are meant to be critical in addition to being descriptive.Format:The format for an annotated bibliography is similar to that of a research paper. Use one-inch margins on all sides, double-space your entries, and arrange each entry in alphabetical order. Hanging Indents are required for citations in the bibliography, as shown below. Evaluating internet and scholarly sources across the disciplines: Two case studies. I found this article useful because much of the content of these case studies can be easily adapted to fit assignments in different academic disciplines.
