This report summarizes Finland's educational performance and policies. Finland consistently ranks high in international assessments of reading, math and science. Unlike the U.S., Finland has a system focused on equality, with no private schools and free public education from preschool through doctoral programs. The goal is cooperation, not competition, between schools. Finland has established trust through professional teacher education programs that recruit from the top 10% and require master's degrees. Their long-term commitment over three decades started with restructuring teacher training and has led to a good and equitable education system for all children.

Empowering Students to Stay in School: A Project in Malawi
The Student Empowerment and Education after-school
program, implemented in five village primary schools in
April 2016, encourages and empowers students, especially
girls, to stay in school. The global grant/vocational training
team project incorporated a cross-cultural, collaborative
approach to develop the program and train Malawian
teachers to refine, implement, and own it. Hear teacher and
student stories, and learn how you can incorporate a similar
process to design your next international project.

1) Finland has consistently ranked highly in international tests of reading, math and science skills since 2000, often ranking first in reading and in the top five in math and science.
2) What makes Finland's schools successful is a focus on high-quality teachers - only about 10% of teaching applicants are accepted to Finland's eight universities that train teachers. Teaching is seen as a prestigious profession.
3) In contrast, the U.S. system places too much emphasis on standardized test scores to evaluate teachers and schools, whereas Finland only gives one national test at the end of secondary school and otherwise trusts schools and teachers.
