This document provides a summary of Dr. Anna Dimitriou's academic background and experience. She has a PhD in Literary Studies from Deakin University, where she studied contemporary Greek Australian writers. She currently teaches at Western Sydney University. Her research interests include diasporic Greek Australian literature and the influence of the Greek civil war on subsequent generations. She has published papers on these topics and presented at several conferences.

Academic Skills, Qualities and Interests
Literary Criticism, oral history, translation from Greek to English, comparative
literature developed in my research on diasporic Greek Australian writers through
the School of Communication and the Creative Arts at Deakin University 2005-
2013. My research interest is on the intersections between oral history and
literature. In particular I am interested in how the second generation (and beyond)
of diasporic Greek Australian writers negotiate their bicultural identity. I am also
interested in researching how the legacy of the Greek civil war has affected the
forthcoming generations of Greek Australian writers.
Academic Degrees
DEAKIN UNIVERSITY: 2005-2013
PhD in Literary Studies in the School of Communication and the Creative Arts;
the area of study was on comparative textual analysis of literary texts by
contemporary Greek Australian writers Stylianos Charkianakis, Dean Kalimnios,
Antigone Kefala, Fotini Epanomitis and Christos Tsiolkas. It explored how the

2. paramythi, a narrative trope circulates in different ways in their texts as a way of
registering their ambivalent relationships with their origins. This thesis
contributes in a substantial way to current scholarship on Greek Australian
writing, and it compares the ways that literary trends in the diaspora vary and
converge with those in the Greek mainland. My initial supervisor was Professor
Wenche Ommundsen, while my main supervisor was Associate Professor Frances
Devlin-Glass. When Frances retired Dr Ron Goodrich supervised me together
with Frances Devlin Glass who continued to inspire and mentor me in the art of
literary criticism.
DEAKIN UNIVERSITY 2004
Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honors) in Literary Studies in the department of
Communication and the Creative Arts. In my dissertation I wrote a creative story
and exegesis KOSMAS’ PETRA , based on an oral history record but interpreted
by the narrator-protagonist, a Greek Australian adolescent, in a dialectic between
the past and present. The exegesis engages on the current debate around
fictionalized oral history/biography as genre. My supervisor was Ronda Bunbury.
DEAKIN UNIVERSITY
Bachelor of Arts majoring in Literary Studies. I was also deeply interested in
sociology, history, comparative religion and anthropology with a keen focus on
issues of inter-cultural relations and translation between cultures.

3. Teaching Experience
Currently I am employed by Western Sydney University as a casual academic teaching
assistant. I teach ‘Text and Traditions’, Introduction to Literary Studies’ and
‘Contemporary Society’, and ‘Methods of Reading’, ‘ Representing the Everyday in
Visual and Literary Culture’ which are first year foundational as well as intermediate
undergraduate level subjects. I have consistently maintained the interest of my students
during my tutorials and have had good attendance throughout the semesters. Dr Helen
Koukoutsis, Dr Paul Alberts Dezeeuw, Dr Lorraine Sim and Dr Shane Hersey, my unit
coordinators can testify to my commitment and conscientiousness.
Prior to this academic position, I presented papers at forums for university students
interested in Christian Orthodoxy at University of NSW and at Sydney University, and to
young women at Retreats for Greek Orthodox Women. I have been actively editing,
translating and proof reading the work of undergraduate and Master’s degree students
from Sydney, NSW, and New England University after gaining my PhD in 2014. My
own research enabled me to master electronic formatting. Verification: Professor
