Presentation given as part "Atlantic Stories from the Child and Youth Sector in Ireland" This public history event was organised by the Digital Repository of Ireland in collaboration with the Children's Research Network of Ireland and Northern Ireland to reflect on the legacy of The Atlantic Philanthropies' investment in the child and youth sector across the island of Ireland, and the work and accomplishments of Atlantic grantees. It took place in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, on 13th November 2018.

- Slide 1: DRI logo slide Addressing the Audience Welcome everybody. I am delighted to be part of this event and I am happy so many of you could come to take part.
- Slide 2: Contact info slide About my person To introduce myself, I am the digital archivist at the Digital Repository of Ireland for The Atlantic Philanthropy Archive project. For this project my focus is on developing guidelines, collection structures, ingest schedules and metadata policies for the project, as well as for the hands-on creation of metadata and ingestion of records into the DRI. Today I want to talk to you about preservation, access and discovery of records at DRI.
- Slide 3: DRI- Preservation, Access and Discovery As a trusted national infrastructure for Ireland’s social and cultural heritage, DRI preserves, curates, and provides sustained access to a wealth of Ireland’s humanities and social sciences data. When you explore or search the repository, you are entering a world of rich content that reflects and shapes a broad portrait of Ireland. Through this single portal, you can view historical and contemporary content from across institutions, domains, and formats. From the same search window, you can browse artworks and hear fascinating oral histories, read cherished old letters, listen to music or dig through business records and ephemera. We have created this repository with two central purposes: to preserve Ireland’s digital heritage for the long term, and to provide you, the user, with access to that heritage.
- Slide 4: The Atlantic Philanthropies Archive Project The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project will document the impact of grant making on organisations and individuals by creating digital exhibitions that will tell a narrative around Atlantic’s philanthropic investment on the island of Ireland. This major new resource is created in collaboration with Cornell University Library and The Atlantic Philanthropies. It will provide a wealth of information for researchers and philanthropists, and will help to tell the stories of those whose lives have been touched by the grants. To do so we will preserve business records and publications drawn from The Atlantic Philanthropies’ collection housed at Cornell University in Ithaka, New York. We will gather personal insights, experiences, and stories in form of oral histories from people across the island of Ireland as a way to ‘put a face’ on the work of Irish grantee projects. We will also invite scholars to engage on the research presented in this collection to create knowledge in form of essays.
- Slide 5: The Atlantic Philanthropies Archive Project To contextualise the different types of materials we collect I will assign each object in this collection a theme and a sub- theme. So each object, like for example: an oral history or a business record will be categorised into human rights, education and community as well as a specific sub-theme, like for example: children and youth. We will also categorise by the name of the organisation who received the grant, for example the National Gay and Lesbian Federation, and relate that organisation to the relevant oral history. Other categories include the location of the grantee on the island of Ireland and the year the grant was awarded.
- Slide 6: Metadata To generate this web of information, I need to be very consistent in describing the material and to be able to do so I use the Qualified Dublin Core metadata standard which comprises of a set of elements: for example title, creator, subjects, rights and so on. I populate each element by using an entry standard known as a controlled vocabulary. This will allow me to format each entry , like for example the date is expressed in year- month –day, so that this information becomes machine readable. This allows me to index each object so that the DRI user can discover the record in many wonderful ways.
