Police Career Profile
Career History
Critical Incident Response Inspector, Edinburgh
I was responsible for assessing risk in relation to dynamic threats facing
communities and individuals across Edinburgh during the course of my shift
(24/7) duty. I was the Police Commander at serious or critical incidents. This
included the management of vulnerable missing persons, serious crimes,
major incidents and a variety of siege situations. I led, managed &
developed 24 officers across the South West & West area of the city.
Police Commander, Corstorphine Area
Here I led a team of 12. I was responsible for ensuring positive community
engagement across my area, this included membership of numerous
community groups along with working with the Head of Services for the
West of Edinburgh Community Council and local Elected Members where I
represented policing. I chaired multi-agency monthly meetings working
with the City Council, Fire Service & Voluntary Organisations, examining
spreadsheets and data, setting agendas & allocating resources to tackle key
3. community priorities to drive performance and ensure best value for the
budget we were spending.
Event Commander – Tynecastle, Easter Road & Murrayfield Stadiums
I have a strong operational background and experience in risk management
& working with key partner agencies. I was trained to National Standard as
a Silver (Tactical) & Bronze (Operational) Commander for sporting & other
events at these three stadia & other venues. These duties included liaison
with stadium officials, planning groups & local stakeholders. My role at
football or rugby matches was to work with the relevant club or association
to assess risk, resource allocation & to respond in a cohesive way to
spontaneous acts that either broke the law or put spectators safety at risk
& to ensure the safe delivery of these events.
I also mentored other commanders.
I have worked for many years at the Royal Highland Show, the largest
outdoor event in Scotland with 170,000 customers attending over four
days. I was involved in the planning process & made several key
recommendations over the years for improvement in public safety &
reduced costings. I have worked at Public Military Events including the
Tattoo & parades. I have worked extensively at demonstrations, including
SDL Climate Protests at the Royal Bank site in Edinburgh, where I provided
the nightshift daily tactical assessment & led police serials protecting the
site.
I have extensive experience in working large crowds, including music
concerts – Oasis, Madonna, One Direction, JLS to name a few. I have
excellent inter–personal skills & was able to communicate with large
groups or individuals at an appropriate level.
These were challenging, high profile events that I was able to work in
tandem with partner agencies to effect a positive & safe outcome.
Public Protection Unit -Edinburgh - I was one of two Inspectors managing
4. and leading teams investigating Domestic Violence, Juvenile Offending and
Sexual Offence enquiries. This was an extremely busy role working with
Social Work, Health, Education in a co-located building dealing with high
risk business. I was involved in twice weekly multi-agency case reviews on
public protection matters for the City of Edinburgh and making decisions on
public safety matters.
Training Completed

Specialist Training
2009 Match Command/Critical Incident Training
The management of critical incidents such as sieges, serious crime and missing persons
is a high risk activity as is managing large scale sports events such as football and rugby
in Edinburgh. This training equipped me to lead these high-risk events to a high
standard. This developed my understanding of risk management, crowd safety and
policy development.

to ensure the Station complied with the Law and staff were trained in fire evacuation
procedures.

organisation and to lead internal recruitment and selection processes.
General - I have managed and led teams from 6 to 60 officers over the past 18 years
dealing with staff welfare, development and discipline. I have always brought fairness
and opportunity to those I supervise whilst applying company policy. I have vast
experience working in a high pressure environment serving the public whilst delivering
positive results. I fully understand and embrace the need for positive customer
engagement and organisational pride
Summary - Whilst my skills have been accrued over a lifetime of public service within
6. the police, a forward thinking structured & disciplined organisation, I would posit that
the basis of these skills are transferrable & show a capacity to lead, manage, work with
others as part of a team & to learn a variety of skills. Given the opportunity I am
sure I will make a positive contribution to your organisation.

Post Police Employment
SAFEGUARDING ADVISOR to The Bishop of Motherwell - Between January
and July 2016 I was employed by the Roman Catholic Church in the largest Diocese in
Scotland comprising of 75 Parishes. I managed the Church’s Public and Child Protection
issues, worked with the Parish Priests, managing case- loads, reviewing process and
making third party reports to other organsations such as the police, legal and insurance
companies where necessary. I sat on various Groups comprising other professionals to
manage Safeguarding business both locally and nationally. I also ensured that 4500
volunteers working for the Diocese in various capacities were suitability vetted in line
with legislation for Protecting Vulnerable Groups. I also hold a 3 year certificate enabling
me to work with these groups. Prior to leaving I produced a detailed report on
Safeguarding in the Diocese on behalf of The Bishop`s Conference.
I was initially on a six month contract and was offered a full time post by The Diocese
but chose not to take up this option. The travelling and working in isolation for most of
the time were not what I wanted.
SECURITY OFFICER EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY - On 1 st August 2016 I took up my
role which involves providing patrols, security checks and student engagement across an
estate with 850 buildings and 35,000 students working on a shift Rota.
I chose not to continue in my role resigning on the 23rd December 2016. The role did
not afford me the level of resposibility, job satisfaction and development that I seek.
