Visual persona diagram - A VSP diagram is a map over a
day in a fictitious user´s life. The diagram is based on the interviews
we did in Kiruna. With the VSP diagram we could discover new
problems and solutions from the viewpoint of a potential user.
Users quick concept exercise - From the final post it
notes we picked a potential solution and then develop it to the next
day. Our class came up with ideas like smart ventilation, protection
unit, communication between co-workers, protection mask, laser
scanner to analyze the rock surface.
Role play - The goal with this exercise was to
immediately identify some of the issues that the user
would face with the chosen solution.
User problems & solutions workshop - Identifying
and writing down problems from the initial research on post it notes.
The weakest ideas were culled continuously by always choosing the
best two post it notes from the other groups and 1 post it from the
our group. The result was some well-analyzed solutions and problem
areas that could be a good start for us in this project.
Field trip analysis - Analyzing
our field trip in groups. The goal was
to ensure that everyone in the class had
the same knowledge about the mining
process but also to start discover areas
that could be improved.
User centered design (UCD) - applies methods from
psychology, sociology and ethnography to understand the user
and to gain a deeper understanding what people really want and
need in order to develop better products.
Insight:
A need for more personal health
monitoring & protection
Industry workers are unaware of their current working environment.
Coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP),
also known as black lung disease has
increased over the last 10 years due to
modern efficient mining machines that
make the coal particles smaller than
before.
Daily exposure to even small amounts of airborne
particles dramatically increase the risks for overtime
ending up with medical conditions like asthma,
cancer or heart failure!
“I dearly loved my coal
mining job. It was the type
of job that you could have
and be proud of. If I had it to
do over again, I would have
worn my respirator more
than I had”
The Idea:
Respiratory mask for standard safety helmets
Problems with today´s masks
1
2
Stored far away from the worker
Protection mask is in the way
when you have it around your neck
No natural place to store the protection mask when isn´t in
use & protect it from getting dust inside
"Now add to that the fact that these miners spend eight to 10 to 12 hours ... operating dangerous equipment and needing to
be able to talk and communicate in a split second, You understand that a respirator is just not a meaningful response."

Natural Cooling System
- The led lights is using the outgoing air for cooling
Functions
Light sensor - Modern head lamps is using a light sensor to
control the light. The sensor is measuring the surrounding light
and the light that is reflecting back, It can then self adjust the
power so it is perfect for the current environment.
Led lights - This module has two integrated led lights with
two different lenses that gives a balanced light both when the
mask is on the helmet and on the face.
The user can self change the led lights and switch to other
lenses i.e. if you want a more focused light or more wide.
Speaker/Microphone - This module have an integrated
speaker and microphone. Depending on your setup you can
choose between to send the audio through the speaker or if
it´s a noisy environment to your headphones.
Exchangeable front
module: the user can
self change, depending
on what their current
need is
RSX´15
Exchangeable front modules
Modules for different professions
Gas sensor for the petrochemical industry.
Detects gas leaks before they hit you.
Basic transparent to facilitate lip-reading
User can self upgrade to improve the masks
performance over time.
Full light module for extreme mining situations
Filter module that you can send to analysis to keep
track of your working environments, could e.g. be
used for health insurance purposes
Intelligent Rear Light RSX´15 has a built in light
sensor that can feel when the user is entering a dark
area making the rear light turn on automatically.
Charging - RSX´15 has rechargeable battery modules
that use the rear light as a charging indicator.
NFC Connection - You can connect and setup
your RSX´15 by using NFC / bluetooth. In the app
you can e.g. select which colleges that are in your
current working area and where to send the audio.
The adudio can be sent trough the module speaker
or to the protective headphones.
Activate Front Module - To activate the front module
(speaker/microphone) you simply remove the neck-strap
from the battery. In this way the battery unit knows that you
are going to use the mask.
Battery with smartness:
RSX´15 has no on/off button. Everything
is controlled by the built-in proximity
sensor that feels when the user is using
the helmet or not. The proximity sensor
also works as a fall-detector and can
send an alarm if the user has not moved
for a while. If the user does not respond
by getting up, the RSX´15 will send out a
distress signal that the closest co-worker
will receive and act upon.

  • 4. Kiruna Radiation monitor “LKAB CHECKS OUR RADIATION MONITORS ONCE PER YEAR, BUT WE DON´T GET TO KNOW THE RESULTS” “ I NEVER TALK ABOUT MY WORK WITH MY KIDS, I THINK THAT IT´S TO DANGEROUS AND I DON´T WANT TO WORRY THEM “ Sweden Umeå Meet the workers 1365M underground Field study trip: 11h journey to the world´s biggest underground iron ore mine
  • 5. Intensive brainstorming workshop: Goal: design opportunities with impact Understand the process Stakeholder maps Annual reports Technology insights Visual persona diagram - A VSP diagram is a map over a day in a fictitious user´s life. The diagram is based on the interviews we did in Kiruna. With the VSP diagram we could discover new problems and solutions from the viewpoint of a potential user. Users quick concept exercise - From the final post it notes we picked a potential solution and then develop it to the next day. Our class came up with ideas like smart ventilation, protection unit, communication between co-workers, protection mask, laser scanner to analyze the rock surface. Role play - The goal with this exercise was to immediately identify some of the issues that the user would face with the chosen solution. User problems & solutions workshop - Identifying and writing down problems from the initial research on post it notes. The weakest ideas were culled continuously by always choosing the best two post it notes from the other groups and 1 post it from the our group. The result was some well-analyzed solutions and problem areas that could be a good start for us in this project. Field trip analysis - Analyzing our field trip in groups. The goal was to ensure that everyone in the class had the same knowledge about the mining process but also to start discover areas that could be improved. User centered design (UCD) - applies methods from psychology, sociology and ethnography to understand the user and to gain a deeper understanding what people really want and need in order to develop better products.
  • 6. Insight: A need for more personal health monitoring & protection Industry workers are unaware of their current working environment. Coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP), also known as black lung disease has increased over the last 10 years due to modern efficient mining machines that make the coal particles smaller than before. Daily exposure to even small amounts of airborne particles dramatically increase the risks for overtime ending up with medical conditions like asthma, cancer or heart failure! “I dearly loved my coal mining job. It was the type of job that you could have and be proud of. If I had it to do over again, I would have worn my respirator more than I had”
  • 7. The Idea: Respiratory mask for standard safety helmets Problems with today´s masks 1 2 Stored far away from the worker Protection mask is in the way when you have it around your neck No natural place to store the protection mask when isn´t in use & protect it from getting dust inside "Now add to that the fact that these miners spend eight to 10 to 12 hours ... operating dangerous equipment and needing to be able to talk and communicate in a split second, You understand that a respirator is just not a meaningful response." From my report Storage Communication

  • 17. Flexible pressure point Fixed pressure point One-strap system: There´s only one strap you need to adjust RSX´15
  • 18. Natural Cooling System - The led lights is using the outgoing air for cooling Functions Light sensor - Modern head lamps is using a light sensor to control the light. The sensor is measuring the surrounding light and the light that is reflecting back, It can then self adjust the power so it is perfect for the current environment. Led lights - This module has two integrated led lights with two different lenses that gives a balanced light both when the mask is on the helmet and on the face. The user can self change the led lights and switch to other lenses i.e. if you want a more focused light or more wide. Speaker/Microphone - This module have an integrated speaker and microphone. Depending on your setup you can choose between to send the audio through the speaker or if it´s a noisy environment to your headphones. Exchangeable front module: the user can self change, depending on what their current need is RSX´15
  • 19. Exchangeable front modules Modules for different professions Gas sensor for the petrochemical industry. Detects gas leaks before they hit you. Basic transparent to facilitate lip-reading User can self upgrade to improve the masks performance over time. Full light module for extreme mining situations Filter module that you can send to analysis to keep track of your working environments, could e.g. be used for health insurance purposes
  • 20. Intelligent Rear Light RSX´15 has a built in light sensor that can feel when the user is entering a dark area making the rear light turn on automatically. Charging - RSX´15 has rechargeable battery modules that use the rear light as a charging indicator. NFC Connection - You can connect and setup your RSX´15 by using NFC / bluetooth. In the app you can e.g. select which colleges that are in your current working area and where to send the audio. The adudio can be sent trough the module speaker or to the protective headphones. Activate Front Module - To activate the front module (speaker/microphone) you simply remove the neck-strap from the battery. In this way the battery unit knows that you are going to use the mask. Battery with smartness: RSX´15 has no on/off button. Everything is controlled by the built-in proximity sensor that feels when the user is using the helmet or not. The proximity sensor also works as a fall-detector and can send an alarm if the user has not moved for a while. If the user does not respond by getting up, the RSX´15 will send out a distress signal that the closest co-worker will receive and act upon. RSX´15
