Whale populations are just beginning to recover from overhunting in the past, as indigenous groups and illegal fishermen still kill large numbers each year. Additional commercial whaling could seriously damage whale populations, especially the endangered Minke whale, pushing them back to the brink of extinction and disrupting the fragile marine ecosystem. Conservation groups are calling for no additional commercial whaling to allow whale numbers to fully recover.
