Ancient Greece was a highly influential civilization located on a mountainous peninsula in Southeastern Europe. It was home to many influential figures in philosophy, politics and the arts like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Alexander the Great. The Greeks also made important contributions to sports with the creation of the Olympic Games and had a rich mythology centered around gods like Zeus, Hades and Athena. Their golden age under Pericles saw advances in architecture, democracy and the arts.
