Ancient Greece

Daily life
Ancient Greeks women staid mostly at home. Especially the poor
women they have to work by herself also had to make clothes.
Women had to marry the one her father chooses. The women
hardly moved from her house. No one was allowed to see her
except her own family. But the rich women had a slave to do stuff
for her and also accompany her or them. The poor women were
insecure. Only men could participate in Olympics or to vote. 50
slaves worked for a rich family. The slaves took care of the farm,
fields, workshops and home. Most slaves were women. There were
also men slaves who worked as guards. Men had better life then
women in Greece. Only men took part in important decisions in
Greece. Only men could fight in armies, participate in sports and
met in public.

School

Greeks schools are very small. There is only one teacher for
ten or twenty boys. The schools were not free, only rich
people could afford to send their children to school. The children
did not need much of school equipment. They had to learn
everything off by heart. When they needed to write they wrote
in wooden boards covered with layers of wax. They used a
wooden pen called as stylus with a sharp end for writing and a
flat end for ‘rubbing out’. The wax was melted and reapplied from
time to time. The education was different for boys and girl. The
boys were educated to become good citizens and take a part of
the public life in city states. The girls were educated for
housekeeping and how to look after their family. Most Greek
women were not allowed to go to school often, they were taught
at home. The boys started school at 7 years old, and stayed until
they were about 14 years old. In the mornings they learned how
to read, write and do simple math. They worked in one room,
which had stools or benches, but no desks. They read out loud and
learned poetry by heart. In afternoon they went to wrestling
schools. The children of rich Athenians could go to assembly.
They also learned by watching and listening to the older men.

Home

Men and women lived in different parts of the house. Most houses
in ancient Greek were built from clay or stone. The roofs were
covered with tiles or reeds. The floors of the house were tiled up
to keep them cool. In winter they will need fire on the metal
basket. Large homes had a kitchen, a room for bathing and a
dining room for men some houses it may also have a women’s
sitting area. The houses have a courtyard, high walls and strong
gate. Lots of Greeks time pass in the courtyard.

Family

Men got married when they were about 25 to 30 years old. But
women way earlier they were married at the age of 12 to 16 years
old. Most girls from richer family got married younger, and from
poor family they married when they were a bit older, because
they did not have much to choose. All the men in their family
(poor family) should choose for her. Rarely the girls met the men
they were going to marry, they saw only at wedding.

Food and Drinks

Ancient Greeks drink alcoholic drinks, beer and sometimes
coffee. Elliniko Café is the most popular coffee in Greece. They
will drink this at breakfast, or when they have break or when
they are with some friend or some gests, they drink also at
midnight or whenever there is coffee time. Elliniko Café is not
served with milk. Frappe is an iced coffee; it is also one of the
popular drinks in Greece. Frappe is drunk especially in warmer
months. In the last summer moths the coffee shops had a great
business around the world Greeks were doing Frappe for many
years ago. People met in cafeteria and slowly sipping the drink.
Tsai is a black tea not so popular in Greece but popular in
England and other places. Greeks drink Tsai with lemon rather

and cake The Ancient Greeks grew olives, grapes, figs and wheat
and kept goats, for milk and cheese. They ate lots of bread, beans
and olives. In the summer months there were plenty of fresh fruit
and vegetables to eat and in the winter they ate dried fruit and
food they had stored like apples and lentils. As most of the
Greeks lived very near the sea, they also ate a lot of fish and
shellfish. Meat was rarely eaten by Greeks they thought that it
was wrong to kill a animal (like goats) and eat. First they have to
sacrifice the meat to gods and then eat a little bit of meat. The
Greeks loved the wine made with grapes they planted.
