3D digital modelling and 3D printing: the case for using Anarkik3D's 3D haptic Cloud9 sketch/modelling software to assess these technologies for the non CAD user, the artist, applied artist, designer markers and all creative people.
Is your store ‘social media’ ready ? - MORE Vision by MAPIC MIPIMWorld
Social media is having an explosive impact on modern consumer behaviour. Harnessing the power of friends, fans and followers is crucial to work with, and not against, the networks that are shaping the face of shopping today.

The design and making process of a necklace using Anarkik 3D Design haptic 3D modelling package, Ultimaker2 3D printer to prototype, units 3D printed in paper in colour on Mcor's IRIS 3D printer, finally hand finished and connected up using loombands!
Like the kid’s drawing game, 3D Consequences is similar but uses 3D digital modelling and the designs are swopped around the four designers participating: Farah Bandookwala, Elizabeth Armour, Lucy Robertson and Ann Marie Shillito.
Apart from being fun the serious aspect of this pilot project is educational: to give a newbie the opportunity to learn 3D digital modelling and thereby gain access 3D printing.
The aim of the project is to show the benefits of Anarkik3D’s haptic 3D modelling package, developed specifically for designer makers and applied artists. (Haptic means 3D touch.) Farah, Elizabeth and Ann Marie model with it and 3D print their work. Lucy joined the project as the newbie and used the Anarkik 3D Design packageas it is quick and easy to learn and to use as haptics provides a more natural way to interact in a virtual environment and model digitally, and to be creative and constructive from the very start.
The models were swopped around in an ordery fashion and the 12 models were 3D printed. Our generous sponsors are:
Sculpteo (www.sculpteo.com): 3D printed 8 of the models in polyamide
ITEC 3D (http://www.itec-3d.com): 3D printed 6 models in paper using Mcor’s Matrix 3D printer.

Haptic 3D modelling software: its development. PPPresentation at 3DPrintShow ...Ann Marie Shillito, FRSA
Anarkik 3D Design for 3D modelling software is a great experience. Its haptic (which means ‘virtual touch’), its fun, its intuitive, its playful, its serious, its not CAD! Its different, easier and quick to learn. It is not prescriptive. Serendipity is the default. Its not for everyone as not everyone wants or can deal with a programme with so few constraints. Artistic persons can!
We developed Anarkik 3D Design for designer makers, applied artists and 3D artists who want a balance between working at the bench and working digitally, want freedom to explore digital form creating, be playful and be able to access 3D printing.
My presentation is about how the right software can make 3D print technology more accessible to many more people and to explain why some artists and designer makers need software that is different from CAD.

DISTANCE Project: Using your maker's tacit knowledge to design in Virtual Rea...Ann Marie Shillito, FRSA
Ann marie Shillito is a jeweller and was one of the applied artists participating in Applied Arts Scotland's Distance Project, exploring the potential of Virtual Reality for their practice. Ann Marie focused on the practicalities of designing jewellery and getting the models 3D printed. This presentation is about using a maker' tacit knowledge to design in Virtual Reality on that journey.
DISTANCE Project: Ann Marie Shillito's explorations in VR and 3D creativityAnn Marie Shillito, FRSA
Ann marie Shillito is a jeweller and was one of the applied artists participating in Applied Arts Scotland's Distance Project, exploring the potential of Virtual Reality for their practice. Ann Marie focused on the practicalities of designing jewellery and getting the models 3D printed. This presentation is that journey.
The story: from professional contemporary jeweller, using exotic metals like titanium and niobium, to founding and running a software development company producing wonderfully disruptive 3D haptic (virtual touch) products. 3D haptics just has to be tried to experience its WOW effect, and to understand its potential as an enabler, particularly in learning programmes. Our main product is 3D modelling. Haptics makes it very easy and quick to learn and use and gives access to 3D printing. Our #TouchableUniverse Project is focused on building an enabling platform for developers to add haptics to their programmes, and on apps that demonstrate the potential of haptics to enhance learning.
Short story, in Pecha Kucha style, about collaborations between a designer maker/jeweller and super techies and computer scientists, demonstrating the value that STEAM collaborations bring to innovation.
3D printing in colour: the potential this technology offers is inspiration for this brooch, another inspirational spark is the Boolean function in our software and the colour feature.
“It is not craft as ‘handicraft’ that defines contemporary craftsmanship: it is craft as knowledge that empowers a maker to take charge of technology.” (Peter Dormer). This SlideShare is an introduction to 3D printing, illustrated with just a very small selection of appplications, mostly within applied art and designer making. Hoping this is inspirational and encourages you to try it out for yourself!
What if you are passionate about 3D printing but can't do CAD. The issue is that to 3D print you need a 3D digital model, not just any model but a watertight solid model in a specific file format. CAD software has been the main way to produce the models for 3D printing and CAD does not fit with many people's way of thinking so they struggle if they get that far!. Fortunately there are now alternative methods of creating and getting models and this presentation, given at the 3DPrintShow 2014 in London, covers those that would be of more interest to applied artists, 3D artists and designer makers. You don’t have to use CAD.

The technology we use makes a difference in the way we work. This story about digitally designing a box for a very special ring illustrates the process step by step.
Anarkik 3D Design haptic 3D modelling software was used and the box designed for 2 different methods of 3D printing: extrusion on a personal 3D printer, and laser sintering of polyamide powder through a 3D printing service provider.
Case study: 3D modelling for 3D printing for designer makers and artistsAnn Marie Shillito, FRSA
Case study demonstrating that learning Anarkik3D's haptic 3D modelling software for 3D printing need not be a huge steep learning curve for designer makers and artists wanting to utilise these amazing technologies to enhance their portfolios of work and make their businesses more sustainable.
This presentation is for the 3DPrintShow seminars in London on Friday 8th November 2013 at 6 pm. It present in images the case for why designer makers with all their expertise and knowledge are able to design and create so effectively using 3D digital design and modelling packages and 3D printing. Once they get to grips with the technologies they produce remarkable works of great value: they have the drive and tenacity to push boundaries, and without the constraints that product designers have to work under, the freedom to explore and experiment. More details about this 3DPrintShow seminar: http://3dprintshow.com/events-registration/?ee=36
The presenter is Ann Marie Shillito, Founder and CEO of Anarkik3D Ltd. She is herself a practising designer maker and contemporary jeweller, an honorary research fellow (Edinburgh College of Art) and author of ‘Digital Crafts: Industrial Technologies for Applied Artists and Designer Makers'. She brings unique knowledge and understanding of the creative sector, manufacturing processes and the value of user-centred development to the creation of Anarkik3D's remarkable touch-enabled 3D sketch/modelling software. Developed by designers makers for designer makers to be intuitive, easy and quick to learn and use, this software also provides easy access to 3D printing technology.

Introduce myself Frans Johansson talks about growing creativity happening at the intersection of ideas, concepts and cultures as the result of the movement of people; the convergence of sientific disciplines; and the leap in computational power … Dr ogle’s 9 laws of creativity which are also network laws – because creativity is ultimately a structural network effect of the ‘smsrt world’ and not something limited to the insides of the heads of a brtilliant few Cloud9 for use in Schools:bundled with the off shelf device. Shortlisted for an educational Bett Award In current economic climate target sectors c an easily justify cost Direct access to 3D printing technology Quick and dirty concept generation for designers
Steep learning curves need more than excitement for motivation to overcome ‘hard’. Sketchup and blender are designer to produce viewable 3D scenes rather than 3D objects. They are usable for but not optimised for 3D printing (Fabbaloo 07/11/2010)
Cloud9 competes well with its inclusivity, lower price, functionality, ease of learning and use, and retention of know-how. These two illustrations are from SketchUp Presentation and aligned up to show the proportion of professionals using costly CAD to users of free products such as sketchup and Blender. Jon Peddie Research : Actual CAD users: yearly upgrade/purchase numbers at 4.22 million for 2009 -- down considerably from 2008 at 5.47 million. Don't think there's going to be a huge increase in 2010, but 2011 should see a rise as industries recover. http://worldcadaccess.typepad.com/blog/2010/05/how-many-cad-users-are-there-i-mean-active-cadusing-users.html
This is what is happening: Generally - major shift in digital media from 2D to 3D, Opportunity - 3D printing . This is not a ‘new’ technology – it is mainly used in industry and by professional designers for final prototyping using bespoke bureaux services (Materialise, Ogle, Laserlines, Fab3D,etc) . It is generally expensive, high end, offering high quality finishes. The technologies involved are developing rapidly: different methods and materials (Examples: photoset resins, nylon, paper ceramics, glass, metals). What is new is the democratisation of this digital technology affordability: cost coming down, growth, growing competition. design your own/construct it yourself/easy to use/low cost (Ponoko, 100KGarages) 3D printing: easy online upload, click & pay Hybrid services: Shapeways, Sculpteo, Growing demand, DIY: RapMan, MakerBot, UP requires 3D digital models to access In Sept 2010 the activity in this sector hotted up ......
Virtual to Tangible, that is digital model to 3D printed artefact, is now ‘tipping’, the evidence as follows: The New York Times had a major article about 3D printing ……. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/14/technology/14print.html?_r=2&pagewanted=2 3D Systems acquires Bits From Bytes Bits from Bytes is an SME based in Bristol and they manufacture the RapMan low cost 3D printer kit and the BfB3000 desktop 3D printer. Bits from Bytes were acquired by major US Company, 3D Systems to expand their 3D printer range into hobbyists/’fabber’ market. Shapeways is a 3D printing service, based in Holland, that has succeeded within 4 years at “easy online ‘click and pay” facility for both professionals and hobbyists alike. They recently received a massive USD$5M investment from top-ranked venture capital firms (Union Square Ventures and Index Ventures) and will move their headquarters to New York. On a monthly basis, Shapeways produce more than 10,000 unique products and these numbers are growing fast. Shapeways has a vibrant, friendly, passionate, community of 50,000 members! There are now more than 20,000 makeable products publicly available on Shapeways ,more than 1,000 ‘shops’ and close to 800 customizable products. 3D software maker NetFabb launched their new easy to use beta Cloud Service to assist modellers in making sure their model is watertight for efficient 3D printing process, cutting time and cost. Ponoko has spread their ‘associates’ group from New Zealand, through the US into Europe. They teamed up with ShopBot in the US to create the 100Kgarages facility to match the needs of makers and hobbyists with the excess capacity that small companies have for laser cutting, machining and 3D printing to create the smallest foot print possible. Materialise , based in Belgium and the largest 3D printing service for professionals and Companies, launched imaterialise, an online 3D print service to make the whole process from digitable to tangible as smooth as possible. Sculpteo, based in France is also entering the US market and offers a friendly, simple approach that seems to address the needs of different audiences to SHapeways. http://fabbaloo.com/blog/2010/10/26/sculpteo-sails-across-the-sea.html
Cloud9 - Mass market potential for sales: Education: primary, secondary, Further, Higher Consumer package/bundle: Haptic games from Novint, EA, Valve etc creative persons of all ages Amateurs, fabbers Global appeal Experience and expertise within Anarkik3D transferable Haptic devices (Sensable’s, Novint’s) Haptic systems (Reachin API, HaptX, H3D …) Virtual environments (Virtual Worlds, SL, OpenSIm) Haptics with Stereovision Bespoke applications (design, visualisations, simulations)
Challenge for early stage business is to develop revenue and profitability while maintaining value for founders and first-round investors. Anarkik3D is achieving this, albeit slowly, with an experienced core development team and consultants prepared to support flexibly on an as-needs basis as demand dictates. To grow and develop robust products effectively Anarkik3D must recruit more programmers, particularly to assist testing and customer support. To be able to recruit Anarkik3D must increase revenues substantially and it is recognised that marketing expertise is central to achieving this.
These advantages are outweighed by the complexity of use and cognitive load imposed on the user through steep learning curves and by the WIMP interface.
Objectives : To survey research and current practice regarding: Design processes, creativity and manual skills in the applied arts Multi-sensory applications in the applied arts. Haptic, stereo, audio and virtual environment technologies. Psychophysical aspects of design, manipulation and human computer interaction in virtual spaces. Identification of user groups and their needs. Identification of dextrous skills within these user groups. Development of appropriate human computer interfaces to support the use of these skills within a haptic virtual space. Evolution of novel techniques within this new virtual medium. Dissemination of project findings to the applied arts community
