Gas exchange begins when oxygen is breathed in through the nose or mouth, passing through the pharynx, larynx, and trachea into the lungs. In the lungs, oxygen passes through branching bronchioles into alveoli, where it diffuses into bloodstream capillaries and binds to red blood cells. Carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction, from capillaries into alveoli and is breathed out of the lungs.
