LEARNING ACTIVITY 11.3
Read the finding of Sister Letty Kuan’s studies on "Retirement and Role
Discontinuities” make a plan of your retirement when you reach 60 years old.
Write at least 4 plans and explain how you will be able to attain it.
To minimize risk, it can be tempting to shy away from stocks, but at
this stage of our lives, the growth that stocks can bring is still
significant. I would recommend holding a sound combination of
stocks, shares, mutual funds and other investments that meet my
criteria for risk aversion, investment time period and liquidity. In a
retirement that may last more than three decades, a well-balanced
portfolio will help me weather downturns and eventually produce
the kind of income I would need to pay expenses. Using the Merrill
Edge Asset AllocatorTMFootnote 1 to ensure that my portfolio is in
accordance with my retirement plan allocation priorities. However,
diversification does not guarantee benefit in weakening economies
or hedge against losses. Increase my retirement savings to the
amount allowable in the 401(k), IRAs or other retirement accounts
wherever possible. In order to apply for any maximum matching
donation that my employer can make, I plan to bring enough into
my 401(k). Laws for catch-up donations cause more than the normal
donation to be put aside. My mortgage payments are accelerated by
sickness so that the debt can be paid off before I retire. Poor pay
cash on big transactions to curb new credit card debt. I will reduce
the volume of retirement revenue that would be expended on
interest costs by minimizing new debt and reducing current debt.
2. "It's like paying 9.9 percent on a risk-free fund when I pay off a
credit card that costs 15 percent interest," My stable revenue from
sources such as social security and workplace pensions is calculated
poorly. My income, savings and pension plans are expected to need
the majority of my retirement assets. The old rule of thumb was that
you must afford to invest 4 per cent of your portfolio annually in
retirement to make my savings last over my lifespan. So if you have
$1 million in retirement savings, after we retire, you can plan to
afford to pay about $40,000 of that total each year. "And my own
withdrawal rate should be tailored and dependent on a number of
variables, such as tolerance of age, gender and risk." The longer we
put off dipping into our nest egg for retirement, the longer our
investments are going to last. Any expenses may be higher later in
life, such as health insurance, while others may decrease, such as
travel or clothes costs. How we survive after retirement will depend
on what we pay. What an ill estimation of my retirement costs. The
bulk of my regular health care costs will be paid by Medicare, but I
will choose to seek extra benefits to help pay for my non-routine
health care expenses, which are expected to escalate as we grow
older. In comparison, Medicare doesn't cover any long-term care
bills. I'll buy long-term care policies to help secure my savings nest
egg, which will help me with expenditures such as home health
aides. My rates will be cheaper if I buy policies now than if I wait a
few years, and Insurers are less likely to be refused. If I have a
health insurance account, the full contribution is wrongly placed.
The contributions are tax-advantaged, but if they are not used for
eligible medical costs, withdrawals will be subject to income tax and
penalties. With tax-free compounding, money I do not invest will
accumulate until I use it during retirement. Where we retire will
have a huge effect on our prices. So if I sell my house in an expensive
3. location and move to a condo in a low-tax state, my costs will drop
sharply, maybe freeing up money to pay for other goals. Or I could
remain in my town, but move to a smaller, more financially
manageable house. I might, on the other hand, prefer to live in an
area with high housing costs and taxes so that I can be close to my
grandchildren or relocate to a cosmopolitan environment. A change
that would entail economizing for me.
