Through watching thriller movies and thriller TV ads; I know that there are certain codes and conventions which are to be followed to achieve a believable and realistic thriller. These qualities include; • Dark lightning • Pale faces • Sound effects too exaggerate either an off-screen diegetic sound or and on-screen diegetic sound • A twist in the storyline to make it un predictable to the audience. • False alarms helping to create a climax/ anti climax (leading to suspense) • Dramatic music and sound as well as dramatic colours • A play on reality which almost makes the thriller almost relatable (however it is not). Eg: insidious, plays on the fear of buying a new house as it may (or in this case IS hunted) through this, the viewers may feel as though it is relatable as they may have also moved houses which may have also been scary experince. These qualities mentioned above are some of which the thriller movies/ trailers such as “insidious”, “the ring three”, “don’t be afraid of the dark” and “the roommate” have used. In addition I would be analysing these trailers.
