The University of Cape Town offers a co-curricular Global Citizenship programme providing students with opportunities to engage critically with contemporary global debates and reflect on issues of citizenship and social justice. The required learning activities include writing blog posts on the course site, participating in voluntary community service and creating small campaigns on campus. While there is enthusiastic engagement with activities, it remains challenging to monitor and assess student participation. Additionally these learning experiences are sufficiently different to academic courses that students remark on the difficulties in knowing what is being required. Over the past four years we have developed a successful learning environment for the programme and now needed to consider a redesign. A widely discussed strategy to acknowledge skills and achievements developed through informal learning involves the use of badges and related gamification ideas. Badges can provide a focus and motivation, and provide a mechanism to help compile a portfolio of evidence. Gamification involves using game-thinking and game mechanics in a non-game context to engage people. These are typically employed to increase motivation and participations. We draw on experience redesigning a Global Citizenship short course to explore the emerging design process and the possible applications and limitations of gamification to recognise informal learning in a university context. The Appreciative Inquiry stages guided the engagement with tutors and lecturers to enhance what is already being done well in the Global Citizenship programme.

This document outlines the requirements for a project-based learning assessment for Form 1 liberal studies students. The project aims to cultivate students' 9 generic skills including communication, creativity, critical thinking, cooperation, self-management, self-study, problem solving, information technology and numeracy. Students are divided into groups of 4-5 to complete a school improvement project over 2 months. They are assessed based on participation, presentation, PowerPoint, model making and a written reflection. A survey found that over 70% of students agreed the project helped them develop the targeted generic skills.
Arrigo research presentation
The document discusses a research study that will examine the effect of writing assignments on student creativity and motivation in a visual art class. The study will compare two groups of students - one that completes written art critiques and research using Web 2.0 tools, and one that only writes post-project self-reflections. Possible threats to the study's validity include data collector bias, differences in student maturity levels, and varying subject characteristics. The results of the study are yet to be determined.

Process of creating a digital resource
This document outlines classroom activities for a course on developing and presenting digital folios over weeks 7-10. It discusses teaching visual communication design and the design thinking process. Week 7 activities include exploring issues and opportunities of teaching in the digital age through group work and individual reflection. Digital literacy library
The library has developed initiatives to support students' digital literacy in 4 areas: search and find information, create a digital portfolio, evaluate and communicate collaboratively, and learn emerging technologies and skills. The initiatives include a one-stop guide for creating a digital portfolio using LinkedIn and Weebly, integrating digital literacy instruction into the library orientation and courses, and developing e-learning materials. The instruction covers the DREAMS approach of determining information needs, retrieving relevant information, evaluating search results, using information appropriately, and sharing information. It aims to help students gain the ability to use digital tools to create, communicate, collaborate, evaluate information, and learn emerging skills independently.

Abstract:
Participate in the development of a research model to support the National DETA Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
Extended Abstract
Come help us develop a research model to facilitate cross institutional research on blended instruction. The future of blended learning should be driven by research-based instructional and institutional interventions as the result of cross institutional research impacting access, learning effectiveness, and student satisfaction.
To give you a little background, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will share their efforts in the establishment of the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancement (DETA) funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. They seek to foster student access and success through evidence-based, cross-institutional online learning practices and technologies. Specifically, DETA looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in blended and online learning, including competency-based education, for underrepresented populations through rigorous research.
This workshop looks to engage the blended learning community in assisting of the development of DETA's research agenda, including a research model for distance education and research toolkits that can be used by institutions across the country. Through collaborative group discussions, this workshop will look for participants to brainstorm and prioritize ideas around defining student success, identifying key research questions to drive future research, development of shared measures to be gathered by different institutions, creation of instrumentation, and more. The outcomes of this workshop will inform research conducted in 2016. Further, opportunities for community engagement, including funding to conduct cross-institutional research, will be discussed.

Speak Up 101 Webina
Project Tomorrow conducted the annual Speak Up research project in 2017 to collect feedback from K-12 stakeholders on digital learning. Over 400,000 students, teachers, parents, and administrators provided input. Key findings included that more students have access to mobile devices at school, with 31% assigned a personal device. Teachers reported using online content and apps most frequently and needing more planning time and support to integrate technology effectively. Parents strongly support technology use in schools and see it as important for their child's future success, but their greatest concern is uneven technology use between teachers.

- Parents and administrators value hands-on experiences like internships and coding for skill development. Drivers for STEAM include closing gaps and developing skills for college and careers.
