The production company's logo appears first in the opening credits. An establishing shot shows a cold, isolated landscape with howling wind. A plane is then seen soaring overhead with roaring engines as it descends toward the ground. Shots between the pilot and crew indicate they are searching for something on a grid. The camera then shows a village with ice rinks and sleighs where elves live. Title cards with the movie title, cast, and crew appear festively in gold writing over shots of the village. Background music has bells and trumpets playing brightly. Diegetic sounds of chatter and toy-making are also heard as the workshop area fades into view.
1. The production company is the first to appear among the opening credits. The music along side it is well known
with this company. Followed by an Establishing shot. We now know where the scene begins and have a sense of
place. There is diegetic wind howling and whistling and the scenery is cold looking and isolated. Then there is a
roaring diegetic plane engine heard and it soars over the audience’s heads. The fast moving plane cuts to one man
with a headset on and is surrounded by various buttons. This indicates he is inside the plane. There is a shot-
reaction-shot to another member of the crew. A Close-up of a grid locating what they’re wanting is shown –
highlighting the importance. The plane descends after their conversation and the camera lowers below the icy
ground.
2. It’s taken roughly a minute to get to the opening credits. The beginning scene was used to introduce the audience
to the plot. The camera now takes the audience through the village where we can see ice rinks, sleighs and Elves.
The title of the film (‘Santa Clause 2’),cast and crew one by one appear on each shot in a festive, gold writing. Gold
is a colour used for celebration, linked with Christmas. The non-diegetic music sounds like trumpets, violins and
bells. The music is very bright and happy. There I diegetic sounds as well of chatter and laughs. Plus, as we fade into
the workshop area we hear hammers and noises from toys. Already within the first two minutes of the film we know
what the aeroplane crew were looking for and know it’s based at the North Pole.
