An Automated Tool for Visualizing Large-Scale Online Discussions

This document proposes a method for visualizing large-scale online discussions using an automated tool. It extracts the Issue-Based Information System (IBIS) structure from discussion platforms to create a tree structure visualization. The tool automatically selects posts to display and includes features like post labeling, expansion, and logging. An experiment compares the proposed tool to bulletin board and existing visualizations. Results show the proposed method supports understanding topics of interest faster than other methods. Future work will investigate summarization techniques for posts.

This paper examines emotion intensity prediction in dialogs between clients and customer support representatives occurring on Twitter. We focus on a single emotion type, namely, frustration, modelling the user's level of frustration while attempting to predict frustration intensity on the current and next turn, based on the text of turns coming from both dialog participants. A subset of the Kaggle Customer Support on Twitter dataset was used as the modelling data, annotated with per-turn frustration intensity ratings. We propose to represent dialog turns by binary encoded bags of automatically selected keywords to be subsequently used in a machine learning classifier. To assess the classification quality, we examined two different levels of accuracy imprecision tolerance. Our model achieved a level of accuracy significantly higher than a statistical baseline for prediction of frustration intensity for a current turn. However, we did not find the additional information from customer support turns to help predict frustration intensity of the next turn, and the reason for that is possibly the stability of user’s frustration level over the course of the conversation, in other words, the inability of support’s response to exert much influence to user’s initial frustration level.

The presentation covered four parts: an introduction to automated negotiation, bargaining approaches using game theory, multi-issue negotiation using heuristic approaches, and an automated negotiation agent competition. Ito discussed key concepts in negotiation like negotiation protocols, strategies, preferences, and Pareto optimality. For bargaining approaches, he summarized Nash's cooperative bargaining solution and Rubinstein's alternating offers model in non-cooperative games.

platforms: product evaluation and commented news. We exploit the fact that most users are very familiar with
both types of such applications, and therefore surveys can be designed to gauge reliably subtle differences
between expectations and properties of these domains. Based on over 1000 responses to surveys described here,
we are able to report statistically significant differences between the user behavior and expectations in the
studied domains.

The agent helped engage more participants, extract valuable insights, and lead to more deliberation. In this paper, we analyzed the impact of the online news’s comments to evaluating the threading models of electronic debates by using online surveys. In this paper, based on the results of our online survey of 500 participants, we evaluated whether forums with comments concerning online news are appropriate for the study of debates. In particular, we have to verify whether the nature of discussions around news is argumentative and whether the participating people expect to engage in multiple rounds of arguments. We presented DirectDemocracyP2P application as a user interface for decentralized debates. In this paper, we evaluated and analyzed the comments that were collected from online surveys to improve the DirectDemocracyP2P applications. Also we have to verify whether the actual comments commonly submitted around news do go beyond the simple advertisement of one own’s merchandise and attacks of competitors, into fair reviews of news features and quality.

Individual and social benefits of online discussion forums
This document summarizes the results of a survey studying how users perceive the online forum Stack Overflow as a learning platform. The survey found that while Stack Overflow is frequently used by programmers to solve problems, its specificity may discourage new learners and less frequent interaction. In particular:
- Stack Overflow is used daily by 43% of respondents and weekly by 40%, but its focus on specific programming questions may not support the learning needs of new programmers.
- Users view Stack Overflow as a source for solving programming problems (51% of respondents) rather than learning new concepts.
- The specificity of questions and answers on Stack Overflow also discourages many users from interacting more frequently on the forum.
Future of open science in collaboration with society
1) Three main topics were discussed in group talks at the workshop: the need to conventionalize open science in different research domains, two functions of citizen science, and the importance of building capacity for "bridging agents" who facilitate interaction between researchers and other societal actors.
2) The two-day workshop in Kyoto involved 37 participants from various backgrounds who discussed open science and collaboration with society. Participants proposed discussion topics which were then discussed in breakout groups.

Online communities are a real medium for human experiences sharing. They contain rich knowledge of lived situations and experiences that can be used to support decision-making process and problem-solving. This work presents an approach for extracting, representing, and evaluating components of problem-solving knowledge shared in online communities. Few studies have tackled the issue of knowledge extraction and its usefulness evaluation in online communities. In this study, we propose a new approach to detect and evaluate best solutions to problems discussed by members of online communities. Our approach is based on knowledge graph technology and graphs theory enabling the representation of knowledge shared by the community and facilitating its reuse. Our process of problem-solving knowledge extraction in online communities (PSKEOC) consists of three phases: problems and solutions detection and classification, knowledge graph constitution and finally best solutions evaluation. The experimental results are compared to the World Health Organization (WHO) model chapter about Infant and young child feeding and show that our approach succeed to extract and reveal important problem-solving knowledge contained in online community’s conversations. Our proposed approach leads to the construction of an experiential knowledge graph as a representation of the constructed knowledge base in the community studied in this paper.

This document summarizes the results of a survey studying how users perceive the online forum Stack Overflow as a learning platform. The survey found that while Stack Overflow is frequently used by programmers to solve problems, its specificity may discourage new learners and less frequent interaction. In particular:
- Stack Overflow is used daily by 43% of respondents and weekly by 40%, but its focus on specific programming questions may not support the learning needs of new programmers.
- Users view Stack Overflow as a source for solving programming problems (51% of respondents) rather than learning new concepts.
- The specificity of questions and answers on Stack Overflow also discourages many users from interacting more frequently on the forum.
Future of open science in collaboration with society
1) Three main topics were discussed in group talks at the workshop: the need to conventionalize open science in different research domains, two functions of citizen science, and the importance of building capacity for "bridging agents" who facilitate interaction between researchers and other societal actors.
2) The two-day workshop in Kyoto involved 37 participants from various backgrounds who discussed open science and collaboration with society. Participants proposed discussion topics which were then discussed in breakout groups.
3) Insights from the workshop included the need to establish open science practices within individual research fields, the dual roles of citizen science in developing infrastructure and enabling social change, and the importance of supporting "bridging agents" as a career to link

Online communities are a real medium for human experiences sharing. They contain rich knowledge of lived situations and experiences that can be used to support decision-making process and problem-solving. This work presents an approach for extracting, representing, and evaluating components of problem-solving knowledge shared in online communities. Few studies have tackled the issue of knowledge extraction and its usefulness evaluation in online communities. In this study, we propose a new approach to detect and evaluate best solutions to problems discussed by members of online communities. Our approach is based on knowledge graph technology and graphs theory enabling the representation of knowledge shared by the community and facilitating its reuse. Our process of problem-solving knowledge extraction in online communities (PSKEOC) consists of three phases: problems and solutions detection and classification, knowledge graph constitution and finally best solutions evaluation. The experimental results are compared to the World Health Organization (WHO) model chapter about Infant and young child feeding and show that our approach succeed to extract and reveal important problem-solving knowledge contained in online community’s conversations. Our proposed approach leads to the construction of an experiential knowledge graph as a representation of the constructed knowledge base in the community studied in this paper.
