Engineering the trebuchet design process presentation
Student designed trebuchet to be used in interscholastic competition. Built to fit within qualifying criteria, the challenge became maximizing range and accuracy in order to selectively engage and destroy enemy targets while staying out of range. Ultimately the contest was lost, but this trebuchet performed to expectations. Consistently lobbing a squash ball projectile over 30 feet and hitting within a square foot when all other parameters were the same.
CO2 Dragster - Design Thinking Process and Manufacturing
An exercise in utilizing physics to create a short-range racing vehicle. The car was to weigh over 45g, under 170g , and be self-propelled through a capsule of compressed Carbon Dioxide inset in the rear. The design process was oriented towards the goal of minimizing all restraining factors including drag, mass and by extension weight, and friction while keeping the vehicle sturdy enough to survive multiple races.
First Semester Exam: Building a Bionic Arm
Bionic limbs have evolved to suit a great variety of needs. From applications of power to dexterity, mechanical devices have begun to merge with the human body to help heal injuries in hundreds of people. An online simulator is sued to create a bionic arm and learn bout the basic components behind it.
Dance pad
Julia Rodriguez and Nolan Slagle created a dance pad and light station prototype connected by a circuit. Nolan built the light box with four light bulbs, and Julia built the dance pad with switches. Their final prototype included diodes to allow electricity to only flow in one direction. When buttons on the dance pad were pressed, completing the circuit, the corresponding lights in the station would illuminate. They refined their design through prototyping and testing simulations, adding diodes when initial designs did not work properly. Their final working product met the project requirements of lighting specific bulbs when different pads were pressed.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace.
