Sgt. Francisco Ramirez was injured in Iraq in 2004 and struggled to navigate the VA system to receive benefits and support for his recovery. He discovered the AMVETS Legal Clinic at Chapman University, where law students provide free legal assistance to veterans under faculty supervision. The clinic helped Ramirez access benefits and programs he was entitled to but did not know about. The AMVETS Legal Clinic was established in 2009 through a grant from AMVETS to Chapman University and has successfully assisted many veterans like Steven Connaker who was homeless but is now recovering with stable housing and care. The clinic is expanding to meet growing demand from law students and veterans in need of its services.
