Amos was a shepherd from Judah who received a prophetic message from God to deliver to the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II. His message condemned the heartlessness of wealthy merchants, the lack of justice, and religious hypocrisy, while also offering hope for restoration if the people repented. The Book of Amos is divided into four sections detailing God's judgment, the reasons for His anger, three visions Amos received, and eventual hope for Israel's future.

2. Who was Amos? Amos was a shepherd who lived in a small village in the country of Judah (Southern Kingdom) He was called by God to go to the Northern Kingdom (Israel) with a prophetic message because they were moving away from God. Amos prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II (Israel) Uzziah (Judah The book was written between 760 BC -750 BC. Amos means “Borne by God” . Another meaning for the name Amos is “Bearer of Burden”

3. The Journey God calls Amos and tells him to go to Bethel (Amos 7:15) Amos travels and goes to Bethel in Israel. Bethel is the place where King Jeroboam II lived. Bethel was ten miles north to Jerusalem. Jeroboam created idols in Bethel and asked the people to worship in Bethel itself. He did not want the Israelites to go to Jerusalem and worship God, because he did not want the two kingdoms to unite. It is at this moment, Amos travels to Bethel with God’s message.

4. The Message Amos went to Bethel with a strong message. He prophesied that many of Israel's neighbors Damascus, Gaza, Tyre,Edom, Ammon and Moab ,would suffer because they broke "the international moral code overseen by the Lord", and Judah and Israel would suffer the most because they knew God, yet rebelled The message of Amos was directed at Heartlessness of wealthy merchants who ignore the plight of the poor Lack of Justice for Righteous the emptiness of religious ritual apart from true faith The message of Amos ends with a proclamation of hope and restoration for the people of Israel if they mend their ways

6. 1. Roar Amos 1: 2 ,3:4 – God is a roaring lion and he is going to pounce on Israel soon (Lion of Judah) Assyrians are also compared to Lion in Nahum 2. God uses the Assyrians to defeat Israel in 722 BC The roar of Judgment of God also echoed against the neighbor nations (Amos 1:3-2:5) and also against Israel (Amos 2:6 -2:16)

God’s Anger God’s anger was because of Religious Hypocrisy of Israelites (Amos 4:4-5) Luxurious complacence ( Amos 6:4-7) Amos suddenly utters the following words “ Prepare to meet your God, Israel” Amos also calls Ashdod (Philistine) and Egypt to come and witness the oppression that is going to happen to Israel. These two nations thought that they were the only nations who oppressed Israel. But God calls these two nations to come and witness what God’s wrath would be like.

8. 3. Three Visions God shows a Vision of Locusts on rampage (Amos 7:1-3). Amos pleads with God not to destroy Israel Then God shows him a vision of Fire (Amos 7:4-6). Amos again pleads with God to show mercy on Israel Finally God shows him another vision of a plumb line (Amos 7:7-9). When Amos realizes that Israel has fallen way too short of God’s standards, he did not have a plea to mercy anymore.

9. Amaziah’s Plot Amaziah was the priest of Bethel . According to God’s covenant, only a Levite could be a priest. But Amaziah was not a levite . Amaziah tried to twist Amos’s prophesy and tried to corrupt the King’s mind by saying that Amos is planning to kill the King. When Amaziah tries to over power Amos, Amos hits the pedal and hits top Gear and announces God’s Judgment

10. 4. Judgment & Hope Vision of Ripe Fruit (Amos 8) – Judgment time is ripe Amos 9:8-9 details about God’s judgment God will not completely destroy Israel because of his promise with Abraham and David (Amos 9:11-15)
