American veterans disabled for life memorial
1. Lois Pope and Fellow Officials Break
Ground on The American Veterans
Disabled for Life Memorial
2.
More than 10 years ago, the United States Congress voted to
establish a memorial dedicated to the country's disabled
veterans.
Thanks to the work of philanthropists like Lois Pope, who
cofounded the Disabled Veterans' LIFE Memorial
Foundation, organization officials and federal politicians
gathered on November 10, 2012, to break ground for the
memorial.
The ceremony drew more than 500 veterans, VIPs, and
other supporters, including, in addition to Ms. Pope, such
figures as Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and
actor and LIFE Foundation spokesman Gary Sinise.

Situated on a 2.4-acre triangular site, the memorial
will overlook the United States Botanic Garden and
the U.S. Capitol building.
Designed by the architectural firm Shalom Baranes
Associates, PC, the memorial will feature a
combination of marble and glass and a star-shaped
reflection pool.
Pepco began construction in late 2012, and officials
expect the project to be completed in September
2014. The LIFE Foundation plans to dedicate the
memorial in October 2014.
