An overview of the ellis island medal of honor
1. An Overview of the Ellis Island
Medal of Honor, by Lois Pope
Every year, the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) awards the Ellis Island Medals of Honor to worthy
individuals. The medal pays homage to individuals who possess remarkable qualities in both their professional and
private lives while also maintaining their unique heritage. The medals are given to native-born Americans from a variety
of ethnic backgrounds. In order to qualify for the medal, individuals must pay respect to their immigrant history. Many
award winners also take pride in the documentation of their families’ voyage to the United States.
NECO presents the medals in an awards ceremony each May on Ellis Island, typically attended by members of all
branches of the military as well as officials of the House of Representatives and the Senate. After awarding
approximately 100 winners, attendees partake in a gala dinner.
