America annexed the Philippines in the early 20th century, making it one of the imperialist nations of the time and facing rebellion from indigenous people as it tried to assert economic and political control over the islands. While the U.S. attempted to gain support from Filipinos and gradually increase self-governance, the Philippine people demonstrated through civil protests and the U.S. faced wars and oppression, and by the 1920s peasant and worker protests showed that America's colonial policies in the Philippines ultimately failed.
