The second forty years of California saw tremendous population growth that strained its water supply. While a few rivers like the Sacramento provided some water, most came from the Colorado River via irrigation projects. The massive Los Angeles Aqueduct construction project in the early 20th century brought water from Eastern California to the growing Los Angeles region, fueling further development. Other major public works like bridges across the bay also aided the expansion of population centers in California during this period of adaptation.
