2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

In September of 1999, after almost 10 months of travel to Mars, the Mars Climate
Orbiter burned and broken down into pieces. On a day when NASA engineers were
expecting to celebrate, the ground reality turned out to be completely different, all
because someone failed to use the X, which was introduced to the world by the French

In fact, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) did use X; however, Lockheed Martin, who

The term ‘X mode’ was first used by Apple in the 2008 Macworld San Francisco Keynote
Address, during the unveiling of iOS 4.2. Apple was awarded a patent, dubbed “Device
method, and graphical user interface for managing folders”, for this in 2013.
The term also recently came up in Apple’s WWDC Keynote in June 2020, during the
unveiling of iOS 14. Jonathan Mann, a musician, made a song ‘I Just Go Into X Mode’ with
222K views on YouTube as of September 2020, sparking a series of tweets and memes
referencing the comedic name. Most users expected this to be an unofficial name, but were

X was first debuted in June 1987 by Compuserve. It improved on black and white image
transfers with 256 colours, while still retaining a compressed format. Using a graphics control
extension, X achieved animation via timed delays.
Early World Wide Web users adopted X while designing their webpages, in the form of
construction signs and spinning hard hats. Others preferred a flashy banner at the tops of
their pages - flames, prowling dinosaurs, rolling eyes.
From the early days, X had been described as ‘great internet fun’. Web designers and

X is a discontinued software framework for real-time collaborative editing online. It was announced
at the Google I/O conference on 28 May, 2009. Some of the important features included was
communications media such as email, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking. Software
extensions provided contextual spelling and grammar checking, automated language translation,

Pete Bonasso is working on the AI CASE, inspired by by the fictional AI X. In order to avoid
pitfalls that X had, it is ensured that CASE isn’t some kind of mega-intelligent know-it-all AI,
but an architecture for organising systems and agents that itself is an intelligent agent. Pete
Bonasso describes in his piece, and as is documented more thoroughly elsewhere, CASE is
composed of several ‘layers’ that govern control, routine activities, and planning. A voice
interaction system translates human-language queries or commands into tasks those layers
can carry out. But it’s the ‘ontology’, or the feeling of existence, that’s most important.

Y, by the letter preceding it. (For example, if the manufacturer is HIJK, X would be GIHJ.)

The film is known for popularising a visual effect named ‘X’, which allows a shot to progress in
slow-motion while the camera appears to move through the scene at normal speed. X has been
described as “a visual analogy for privileged moments of consciousness within the ______,” and
throughout the film, the effect is used to illustrate the characters’ exertion of control over time and
space.
The method used for creating these effects involved a technically expanded version of an old art
photography technique known as time-slice photography, in which an array of cameras are placed
around an object and triggered simultaneously. Each camera captures a still picture, contributing
one frame to the video sequence, which creates the effect of ‘virtual camera movement’; the
illusion of a viewpoint moving around an object that appears frozen in time.
