1. Cattle drive festival 2010 in the holiday region Hohe Salve
When the cows head home
Every year in early autumn, the cows leave the mountain pastures to make their way
back down to the valley; and this is the best time of the year for hiking. It’s still nice and
warm but getting to the summit is no longer such a sweaty affair. If there was still
enough grass to eat on the pastures, the cows would surely extend their summer holiday
to enjoy this special time in the mountains too. As a hiker there is no need to worry
about taking provisions as most of the Alpine huts remain open with a range of delicious
treats to tempt guests.
This traditional cattle drive, when the dairy farmers lead their cows back home, is known
as the Almabtrieb and has been a wonderful festive custom in the Hohe Salve holiday
region for decades. Early in the morning, the cows and calves are adorned with colourful
flower decorations as a sign that the summer in the mountains has passed without
difficulty. Man and beast will often walk for hours to get home. And while in the valley
the cows can look forward to a reward of lush, juicy meadows, the dairy workers are
greeted by merry chaos after weeks of serenity on the mountains.
The Almabtrieb in Angerberg, 18th of september 2010
On the 18th September, the Almabtrieb in Angerberg will be combined with a harvest
festival. The fruit-growing and gardening club along with the farmers of Angerberg invite
you to the “Ziederberger Bauern” farm in the district of Embach. The first cows are
expected around midday, begin at 11.00 am. Children can ride the Haflinger ponies,
make a fuss of the little animals in the petting zoo or drive the huskies or pedal tractors.
From 11.30 am a free tourist train takes children and adults from Landgasthof
Schlossblick to the Ziederberger farm where visitors enjoy a musical reception.
Admission is free of course.
The Almabtrieb in Hopfgarten and Kelchsau, 25th of september 2010
The Almabtrieb in Hopfgarten and Kelchsau kicks off with a Tyrolean Evening the day
before to get everyone in the mood for the rustic Tyrolean festivities with lively music
and thigh-slapping Schuhplattler dancers, keeping the traditions alive. Then the actual
Almabtrieb with cattle drive festival welcomes all on the 25th September.
If you want to experience real Tyrolean tradition up close, then on no account should you
miss this festival in Kelchsau. With its old original centre this small village offers the
perfect backdrop for the farmer’s market on the day of the cattle drive. Traditional
handicrafts and Tyrolean delicacies make this day an event well worth seeing. Begin at
about 08:30 am.
Most of the cows, however, don’t stay in Kelchsau but leave the valley to go on to
Hopfgarten and Itter. Consequently hundreds of cattle tramp through the Hopfgartner
market enjoying a warm reception as they make their way home. At 11 o’clock the band
strikes up and the first treats of the day are served, from typical Tyrolean specialities to
prized schnapps. Stock up on local natural products at the farmer’s market and
experience a “Plattenwerfer” (disc throwing) tournament at the Salvena car park.
Craftsmen and women, proud to preserve their traditional working methods, are on hand
and keen to share their expertise. The festival is organised by the clubs and innkeepers
of Hopfgarten, who are looking forward to welcoming all visitors.
